The BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring is an all-electric, all-wheel drive wagon designed to ferry cargo, electrons and five passengers in style and comfort, and at speeds approaching Voyager 2.

Its only obvious rival is the Porsche Taycan, which costs $10k less, has a longer range and that famous badge from Stuttgart, but is this Munich mile-mauler a better bet?

Within its own stable, the i5 M60 xDrive Touring has some serious cred.

Forget the M5 Touring: the i5 is lighter, costs $47k less – and, if you’re looking for a practical reason to spend $220k on a wagon, it has a bigger boot than the M5 wagon, too.

A M5 is an i6 (m60 xDrive Touring) and the grand poobah of BMW’s wild wagons. If you haven’t owned an M5, is that not bad consolation?

The formula is simple. The i5 M60 Touring is the more cargo-capable version of the i5 M60 xDrive sedan – and cooler, simply because it’s a wagon.

This is a cost of $4000 more than the sedan with the same powertrain, but adds 1210 litres (up to 1700L against the 490LT) for an extra 45kg (but only 0). a second slower to 100km/h with claimed time of just 3 seconds. During 9 seconds, is said to have been.

Clearly, the sedan isn’t cool enough to be an i5 M60 (which can’s not have the volume inside) but it needs more coins and weighs less– although its sedan shades the il5 MS60 Touring by 0. paraphrasing 3 seconds to 100km/h. But you call that shading?

The i5 is an absolute weapon, but the level of stealth you thinks it’s going to be your thing. mystery and pure-electric energy may be something that makes you feel like this if you believe M5 are too obvious?

And in the Tanzanite Blue metallic paintwork of our test car, it just looks the business, doesn’t it?

How much does the BMW i5 cost?

It is a list price of $219,900 before on-road costs for the BMW i5 M60 Touring xDrive ($4000+) that’s cheaper than its sedan counterpart but still less expensive than the flagship BMW M5 Tourer which provides V8 hybrid power from $263,600 before going on road.

What is the BMW i5 like on the inside?

i5’s cabin is excellent, with roomy front and second-row seats in comfortable leather-trimmed seats, soft carpets, lashing carbon-fibre quality switchgear and the latest tech – even a bit of light show.

A. luxury cabin that is understated and efficient, the overall feeling is of no one screaming at you nor trying to impress over-the-top showiness – it’s just a smart combination which leads to achieving ‘an effective, confident resultant outcome in an impressively well-executed manner with…

A BMW M model has its pretensions with perforated white leather seat upholstery, and the front seats themselves are wide and comfortable but have good bolstering (but not so tight that you feel like being squeezed into a vice-versa).

Although the front seats were supportive and a little firm, the electrically adjustable fronts made it comfortable on short jaunts and longer trips – more in the driving section below.

It also has a fun light band throughout its 12 year span, as well as the i5’s . A 3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14 inches of ad-hoc instruments cluster. A 9-inch central infotainment touchscreen, according to other BMWs (see the drive mode) changes with the newer version of the driver.

During Efficient mode, it has a soothing blue light theme; Sport changes its color and colour to red as you mimic your own mist (with an even deeper synthesised ‘engine’ note and sharper throttle response).

Other modes include Relaxed, bringing wild purple designs, but you can customise the themes however you like.

It allows you to tie in functions such as the sunroof is open or closed, into each mode and of course there’s a Personal setting for this; it has i5 (set menu) which lets you choose the default mode when you start the il5.

The start button and jewel-like gear selector are also part of the centre console; it’s much better than in smaller BMWs because individual buttons are more isolated, so you don’t see the whole panel move every time any is pushed.

It has a roller volume knob that sits in front of ‘fairly large centre console’ and near the dash there are two wireless smartphone charging spaces – although we had to remove the covers from some of our smartphones for them, unlike in some more expensive cars where they were running.

This is a good, clear graphics central multimedia screen (which hosts wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – but some controls would be better as physical buttons even if they are only one step into the touchscreen menu), which works well with good-quality graphics.

As with other 5ers, there are haptic demister and fan-speed buttons below the screen where we have some smartly integrated air-conditioning vents that we love.

A good image quality of the front, rear and 360-degree cameras is a great combination with light low speed steering to make parking easier and help confidence in tricky streets.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel rim with tri colour M stitching – as do the seatbelt edges and solid thickness, give an impression of quality and make the i5 M60 Touring feel on the road very much like it is.

That solid yet lithe feel is matched by the switchgear and other physical buttons.

Similarly, there’s also a head-up display that changes with the drive modes, which displays SAT-nav and vitals like speed, along with crisp digital instruments.

The other rows are well-equipped for legroom, a lot of shoulder room and plenty of comfort; the 6040–split/folding back seat is centre arm rested with two cupholders.

In the B-pillar, air vents are also used for rear-seat passengers and two more in the centre console – with their own digital dual-zone temperature adjustment and USB-C ports in each front seat of each back.

The panoramic roof extends above the rear passengers, too; seatbacks can be folded by levers in the boot and the electric tailgate operated through the key fob.

The i5’s packaging is not affected by its electric powertrain and all-wheel drive, so BMW claims the same cargo space for all 5 Series Touring models regardless of power train (up to 1700L).

What’s under the bonnet?

The electric gubbins are obscured by a massive black plastic shroud festooned with an M badge masquerading as an engine cover, which is disguised in the huge black Plastik Shroude Festoon. It has an electric motor that is mounted on each axle to drive all-wheels, and stonking outputs of 442kW power and 820Nm torque. A claimed 503km (WLTP) of range from a large 84kWh lithium-ion battery and.

How does the BMW i5 drive?

An absolute road master The i5 M60 is an absolute genius of the art. While other EVs can accelerate rapidly, the M60 mixes this with its near-instant response – leading to a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3? 9 seconds – sharp and engaging point-to-point ability.

It’s a 2350kg station wagon, but even the first time you get behind the wheel it is never overly obvious. This is an even more impressive feat when this isn’t really that much weighted (even though we say “I am not going to be in shock”).

As you walk past the sleeping BMW, its kidney grille and lights light up – because it’s proximity key actually works – then you pull down the recessed door handle. We have a test car inside, which is well equipped with white perforated leather seat trim in the roomy cabin.

When you slip in the electric driver’s seat and turn on the mirrors, set the classic BMW M steering wheel to your liking, you’ll find that it is a great driving position, quality-rich thick wheels (and an average high-end) fit and finish. It isn’t over the top, but subtle, smooth and elegant – other than the wild light band around the dash which changes with driver modes – that makes it distinct from the cabin.

Even before you leave the theatre there’s a . Hit the start button on the centre console – where a jewel-like gear selector is with rotary mode selecter, volume roller and electric park brake and there’s genuinely satisfied warbly start-up noise.

It can turn off the ‘iconic sounds’ of BMW but it is a prelude to opening notes – if you are welcome – to the performance that the i5 M60 Touring will be about to deliver. And for the age, it’s a performance like .

That’s the speed, with no wheelspin, No jerkiness and absolute efficiency This is quick – so amazing fast. Even in its Efficiency setting – one of six drive modes, where the throttle pedal is easy to control – a stab of the accelerator unleashes ‘power and movement’ but it’s intelligently contained inside.

While there’s nose lift, it’t quickly be controlled as the i5 moves forward like you think– and with its correct steering and great rear-view that makes traffic easy to put in. Nearly like the vehicles around you are slam-in motion movie propses – lane merges become effortless, and previously tricky intersections turn into a doddle when holes grow larger as gaps get bigger (i5’s launch capability).

Find a winding street and the full-time execution of this car becomes even more obvious. Hit hit the Sport button; The inside light band goes back into red, almost egging you on while seat bolsters tighten nearly like the i5 is building its muscle.

Sport mode has a sharper throttle response, which means blinding acceleration is combined with seemingly infinite lax grip – this wagon holds on and around corners so you can add, add and add some power. It is easy to position the BMW on a narrow winding road because of its accuracy in the steering–a boon in traffic – with small adjustments easily made if required.

Nevertheless, there is little explanation for the need to change your line; the i5 is so poised and so unshakeable around corners, but its compliant ride makes it edge off bumps — and never lets bump-bugger or rut or anything else disrupt its flow.

Nothing is there in its way when the i5 M60 wants a corner. Apart from the laws of physics, well iswell. The brakes cannot match the car’s acceleration, which we never had an issue with, but the brake pedal feel isn’t as strong a response to the throttle as we would like it.

That’s why you are judicious with the throttle down a twisty road, because you can drink such ridiculous doses of power but the brakes may not always pull the wagon up like they would be when you’d think it was. Frankly, we never had an issue with the stoppers to be frank but the feel didn’t quite match the i5’s supersonic acceleration.

Ah, yes, this is a wagon. One of the BMW wagons that . The driving experience is so engaging and so complete that it just doesn’t fit the criteria of a standard practical wagon, which makes it easy to forget. Impractical power – then.

But as soon as you lift off, yet Clark Kent appears to be an utterly convincing ruse of s. If you are an EV, there is no shout from outsiders so the transition between biblical performance and Sunday churchgoer is rapid. The athleticism is also withdrawn for civility – no sweat, no track shoes or heavy breathing – and the compliant ride now offers impressive smooth sailing (ironing out speed bumps but with a slightly sporting edge given that M60 rides on 21st) while ironing them out.

A driving range, of course, is shattered when the i5 is hard-pushed but even in Efficient mode – with ‘Maximum range’ chosen the control, poise and power are still there, just with a more powerful accelerator pedal feel. However, the fire and brimstone that comes from one of the stabs of this throttle awaits in yet another.

A beautiful piece of equipment, which gives trust and confidence from the driver’s seat, is a fascinating drive from an impressive piece that impresse with its ability and skill. The M60 is a fraction of ‘bona-fide, bona fide M5 EV’ but there’s still room for more.

i5 M60 is an automobile that plays to its maker’s strengths with incredible acceleration, but takes several steps beyond standard EVs which have a brutal straight-line punch without the follow-up.

It is a strikingly emotive performance – you want to drive it – with’shocking acceleration when you hit the throttle, but holds onto corners like if someone from the US president imports tariffs.

When it executes orders from the driver’s seat, it does not fuck and doesn’t provoke any violence – all seems effortless then asks for more.

If you’re a die-hard petrol-head and think electric cars can’t make fun, rewarding and entertaining driving for the world, just five minutes behind the wheel of the i5 M60 Touring.

A wagon is useful, and can be passed off as a family purchase (if required) but its only serious disadvantage may be price (and later resale value)).

And while it is a good driving range, you’ll see why the BMW M5 Touring uses v8 hybrids to become an intercontinental ballistic missile. While the i5 is meaty and muscular, it still can’t beat an old school bent-eight for a backing track.

But, if the i5 M60 is 90 per cent of the way to an M5 – yes, it’s good – even though BMW has only left just a little in reserve for room for its iconic hero model. And if you don’t notice, or care about s, you may not even notice.
