2026 GWM Cannon review

TheGWM Cannonrange received a facelift in 2025. Well, almost.

The budget-friendly versions of this Chinese ute flaunted a fresh face, but the XSR, the beast of the lineup, remained stubbornly rugged, its exterior untouched by the cosmetic surgeon’s knife.

"If you’re clinging to nostalgia, maybe that’s acceptable. But let’s be honest, decking out the premium model in yesterday’s clothes? It’s a bizarre choice, bordering on design malpractice."

If cutting-edge bells and whistles don’t tickle your fancy, prepare to be impressed. This model delivers serious bang for your buck, a compelling proposition that speaks for itself.

How much does the GWM Cannon cost?

There a few versions of the Cannon available, and the XSR is the flagship 4×4 dual-cab.

What is the GWM Cannon like on the inside?

Forget the flashy shell. This model’s beauty is on the inside. Unlike its budget-friendly cousins flaunting fresh faces, this one’s had a soul makeover, a complete interior transformation into a modern masterpiece.

The cockpit receives a welcome refresh: a redesigned steering wheel, a streamlined dashboard, and a daring move – the cowl over the digital instrument cluster has vanished. Outback adventurers might squint at midday, but the open, airy feel marks a genuine leap forward in design.

Gone is the rigid four-spoke steering wheel, replaced by a plusher, three-spoke helm reminiscent of a tank’s controls. Mastering the functions is now refreshingly intuitive.

Step into the future with the dashboard’s stunning 12.3-inch touchscreen media system – a portal to seamless connectivity and intuitive control. Ditch the learning curve; this responsive display offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. While navigating, prepare for a clever quirk: the drop-down menus take a brief intermission during CarPlay adventures.

The home screen offers a dizzying level of customization. Thankfully, navigating the media system is a breeze thanks to a dedicated bank of buttons – though, truth be told, the previous model’s layout, with its satisfyingly tactile air-con dials and even more physical controls, had a certain charm.

The physical buttons are a win, thankfully offering instant access to demisters, recirculation, and seat heating/ventilation. While you’re still tethered to the screen for precise seat adjustments, these shortcuts free you up to navigate more critical functions. The software, however, throws a wrench in the works. It stubbornly refused to jump to the seat adjustment menu when I was running CarPlay, forcing me to dig deeper than I should have.

Master the quirks of the Cannon XSR’s interface wrestle its safety systems into submission if they dare irk you, as they did me and you’ll unlock an unexpectedly delightful sanctuary within its updated interior.

Sink into the embrace of heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable front seats, crafted for exceptional comfort and support on any journey. Cleverly designed storage solutions abound: a handy tray for the front passenger, a traditional glovebox, a spacious center console, a convenient wireless phone charger, secure cupholders, and generously sized door pockets ready to accommodate your favorite beverages.

Stretch out and relax! The back seat offers limousine-like legroom, plenty of headroom, and enough shoulder space to avoid elbow wars. Only the unlucky soul stuck in the middle seat might feel a slight squeeze on their knees and toes.

Forget packing sardines; this cab comfortably fits three adults – unless they’re auditioning for a superhero movie. And unlike those other dual-cabs pretending to be family-friendly, this one boastsactualtop-tether attachment hooks for child seats, banishing those dodgy strap-through contraptions to the automotive hall of shame. Plus, ISOFIX points are conveniently located in the window seats, making car seat installation a breeze.

The backseat transforms into a haven of convenience. Passengers enjoy personal directional air vents, USB charging ports to power up devices, and handy map pockets for stashing essentials. A flip-down armrest with integrated cupholders creates a relaxed atmosphere. Thoughtful touches abound, like sturdy grab handles that ease entry and provide secure support on the move, while plush, padded door panels offer a comfortable resting place for arms.

The cargo zone? Still a champion. Think rugged spray-in bed liner ready for anything you throw at it. Need a boost? The pop-out step ladder and bumper step-points are your instant access crew. Love the look? The sports bar’s still there. Want security? Central locking for the tailgate makes adding a canopy a breeze. Curious about dimensions? They’re all listed below, ready to hold whatever life throws your way.

Ample tie-down points ensure your cargo stays put. While the cargo area might not swallow a full-sized Aussie pallet (1165mm square) between the wheel wells, it offers respectable space for most loads. Just remember to keep the payload limits in mind – details on that are coming right up.

What’s under the bonnet?

Ready to dive deep into the model lineup? This article unveils every variant, from engine roar to wheelbase whisper.

| Specifications | GWM Cannon XSR | | — | — | |Engine| 2.4L 4cyl turbo-diesel | |Power| 135kW | |Torque| 480Nm | |Transmission| 9-speed automatic | |Drive type| Four-wheel drive | |Fuel economy (claimed)| 8.4L/100km | |Fuel economy (as tested)| 9.4L/100km | |CO2 emissions (claimed)| 221g/km | |Fuel tank| 78L | |Emissions standard| Euro 5 | |Kerb weight| 2330kg | |Payload| 875kg | |Braked towing capacity| 3500kg | |Gross vehicle mass (GVM)| 3205kg | |Gross combination mass (GCM)| 6300kg |

My initial fuel consumption test, tragically devoid of any off-road adventures due to a daycare plague courtesy of my kids, clocked in at 9.4L/100km.

The Cannon-XSR’s larger engine and 10-speed transmission deliver a surprising real-world fuel economy advantage. My previous drive in the smaller-engined, eight-speed variant clocked in at 10.1L/100km. This new setup proves bigger isn’t always thirstier.

How does the GWM Cannon drive?

Forget subtle tweaks. The real game-changer? Unleashing the raw fury of that new, beastly engine. It’s not just an upgrade; it’s a complete reinvention of the drive.

"The difference? Think of a lion waking from a nap, stretching, and decidingnowis the time to hunt. We’re not talking about a polite little boost here. This is a 12.5% power surge and a 20% torque explosion. Prepare for liftoff."

"Out on the road, the difference is palpable. Once you’re rolling, the power surge is addictive, but be warned: getting off the line requires a measured foot, as a brief hesitation precedes the full fury."

<strong > Option 2 (Focus on the driving experience):</strong >

"In realworld driving, this translates to exhilarating bursts of speed when you’re already in motion. However, be prepared for a moment’s pause before the engine unleashes its full potential from a complete stop."

<strong > Option 3 (Focus on intrigue):</strong >

"The everyday driving experience reveals a Jekyll and Hyde nature. Midrange acceleration is a potent shot of adrenaline, yet a subtle reluctance lingers at launch, demanding a patient approach."

While the new nine-speed automatic boasts an extra gear over its predecessor, its performance occasionally misses the mark.

Instead of smoothly gliding through gears, the transmission sometimes clings stubbornly to lower ones, even when you’re just lightly pressing the accelerator. It’s like it’s savoring the moment a little too much. More perplexing were the occasional brain-teasers at mixed speeds – moments where the transmission seemed to pause, contemplating its next move like a chess player facing a baffling board.

"While not a perfect element, the powertrain’s overall charm easily won me over."

Full disclosure: My off-road adventure was sidelined by a tiny tyrant – preschool germs! So, my insights are strictly pavement-princess observations in 2H (high-range RWD). Yes, it boasts 4H (high-range 4WD) and low-range (4L) capabilities, but my week was dedicated to battling microscopic invaders, not conquering rocky trails. For off-road prowess, Paul’s previous XSR review offers some insights, or check out videos of the new model tackling the infamous Beer O’Clock Hill.

The XSR’s familiar driving dynamics return, though the knobby, off-road tires introduce a noticeable looseness in cornering. A truly massive turning circle and a nose-heavy feel amplify this effect, demanding extra attention through every bend.

"The ride offers a pleasing level of comfort, and despite its heft – a noticeable 2273kg – the Cannon maintains a surprisingly planted feel through corners. Mastering the steering takes a moment, but once you do, its balanced nature inspires confidence."

The tires sing a slightly louder tune than we’d prefer, a consequence of their tenacious grip. A whisper of wind joins the chorus, a subtle reminder of the elements at play.

While it won’t steal the Ranger’s driving crown, and might not ignite your soul on twisty roads, this contender punches far above its weight class. Considering the price tag and the kit it boasts, the on-road performance is surprisingly rewarding. It’s a testament to value engineering, proving you don’t need to break the bank for a capable ride.

Unfortunately, the lane keeping assistance and driver monitoring systems are a major letdown. Prepare to be annoyed – you’ll be reaching for the off switch faster than you can say "nanny state." And if, like me, the incessant "bing-bongs" of the traffic sign recognition system drive you to the brink of madness, that’ll be getting silenced too.

Is the GWM Cannon safe?

The GWM Ute, rebranded as the Cannon, boasts a five-star ANCAP safety rating (excluding the Cannon XSR variant) achieved in November 2021. Drive with confidence, knowing this robust safety pedigree extends to the newly named model.

| Category | GWM Cannon | | — | — | |Adult occupant protection| 86 per cent | |Child occupant protection| 87 per cent | |Vulnerable road user protection| 67 per cent | |Safety assist| 70 per cent |

Standard safety equipment includes:

  • 7 airbags, including:
  • Curtain
  • Front centre
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Cyclist detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring (dual-cab only)
  • Driver fatigue monitoring system
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Lane-change assist (dual-cab only)
  • Rear cross-traffic assist (dual-cab only)
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Reverse camera
  • Safe exit warning (dual-cab only)
  • Speed warning
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Trailer sway mitigation
  • Tyre-pressure monitoring

The Cannon Ultra and Vanta boast eyes everywhere, thanks to their surround-view cameras and intuitive front parking sensors. The XSR takes that vision and runs wild, adding dedicated off-road camera controls for conquering any terrain.

Ironically, the flagship Cannon XSR, despite its premium price tag, strangely omits crucial safety features. Forget emergency lane-keeping, safe exit warnings, or rear collision alerts. Blind-spot monitoring? Lane-change assist? Rear cross-traffic alert with braking? Absent. So, essentially, you’re paying top dollar for the "least safe" version.

Enveloping every passenger are seven airbags – a protective cocoon of front, side, and curtain airbags stretching the full length of both rows, offering unparalleled peace of mind.

| Servicing and Warranty | GWM Cannon | | — | — | |Warranty| 7 years, unlimited kilometres | |Roadside assistance| 5 years | |Service intervals| 12 months, 15,000km (except 10,000km first service) | |Capped-price servicing| 5 years | |Average annual capped-price service cost| $506 | |Total capped-price service cost| $2530 |

Forget those wallet-draining, frequent pit stops of the past! This model stretches its legs (and your savings) with a significantly extended service schedule. Your first check-up isn’t until a year or 10,000 km, a vast improvement over the old six-month/5,000 km routine. After that initial milestone, you’re only looking at annual servicing intervals, but with a generous 15,000 km allowance. That’s a welcome leap from the previous, more demanding 10,000 km schedule. More road, less wrench time.

Five years or 70,000 km of driving worry-free? Think again. While a capped-price service plan offers initial comfort, be warned: averaging $506 per service, it’s a pricier proposition than you might expect – and stings more than servicing some competitor utes.

The brand gives you five years of roadside assistance for free, too.

childcareman.xyz’s Take on the GWM Cannon XSR

The GWM Cannon XSR is a dual-cab 4×4 ute that’s ready for the rough stuff, straight off the showroom floor.

And unlike some rivals, it isn’t ridiculously priced compared to the standard versions.

Okay, here’s a punchier rewrite:

"It’s not perfect, granted, but if you’re a ute buyer craving a more rugged aesthetic and serious off-road capability beyond the average rig, this could be your beast."
