The British-imagined, German-powered, French-built Ineos Grenadier may be a rare sight on Australian roads, but 2026 presents a huge opportunity for the rugged off-roader to start stealing sales from Toyota and its best-selling LandCruiser 70 Series.

To begin with, Ineos has updated the Grenadier to address key criticisms, namely its steering.
A new variable-ratio steering box is also introduced to all Grenadiers, the automaker says gives them more precision and responsiveness. It also claims that the update will give a five per cent smaller turning circle, with new lock-stops designed to improve low-speed manoeuvrability off-road and around town.
In addition to this, the Grenadier’s climate control system has been updated “to improve the predictability of heating and cooling within the cabin”… whatever that means.
To top it all off, a trendy, stealthy Black Edition joins the range.

So the list of reasons to ignore Ineos has shortened.
The list of reasons to ignore the 70 Series may have lengthened, while its 4’s axing might have been an extension of . Following 17 years of selling for “changing regulations and community expectations” 5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine, which is a popular option to replace the diesel engines in its own right now. Rather, the LC70 is now only available with the four-cylinder 2 (along with s). A 8-litre turbo -diesel from the HiLux, which is more torque and efficiency than the V8 but can’t match the grunt nor smoothness of the Grenadier’s BMW-sourced inline sixes.
Is a change of guard imminent, so is ?Unlikely. Last year, in Australia, Ineos sold around 1200 cars; the 70 Series alone topped 10,000 sales and it’ll take much more than an engine change for Toyota loyalists to abandon ship. And that loyalty is well-founded too – Toyota has decades of proven reliability on its side, as well as an extensive dealer network which covers every corner of this sunburnt country.
But, even despite that, the Grenadier makes a strong case for itself. Read on to find out why.
How much does the Ineos Grenadier cost?
Prices remain unchanged, starting at $104,000 before on-road costs for the entry-level Quartermaster dual-cab/chassis, $107,000 for the station wagon and Quartermaster ute, and $120,000 for the Fieldmaster and Trialmaster grades, following discounts of nearly $20,000 offered towards the end of 2025.

What is the Ineos Grenadier like on the inside?
Other than that, Black Edition edition updates for the MY26 Grenadier haven’t really reached inside its interior. And that’s not a big deal; the Grenadier still feels purpose-built from the moment you climb in.

Ingress requires some scrambling, with optional side steps lending a helping hand. Disappointingly, there’s no grab-handle on the driver’s A-pillar.
It also disappointed me that the driving position in the Grenadier is still a bit deprt, even though I was very impressed. The footwell has a large fan-like sound that feeds into left-foot space, and there is an unusual lack of padding where your left knee will likely be on the transmission tunnel.
Hence the seats themselves are very good,’ said. The thigh support and body-hugging supporting are plentiful, with the phrase made by Recaro, an area of this field’s household name.

When (relatively) seated, your attention immediately comes to the tone-setting safari windows overhead that flood the cabin with light and reinforce the Grenadier’s adventurous spirit.
An airplane style switchboard is surrounded by pop-up glass panels, which split into two parts one with off-road controls and the other with auxiliary switches that you can hook up to whatever 12V accessories do you want (winch/light bar or something for the cabin)? Ineos is one of the many ways in which owners can customise their Grenadier, as is the culture around this type of car.
The off-road stuff is largely isolated from the climate controls, which are more of the centre stack and therefore remain separate. All of the buttons and dials are clearly labelled; this makes it easy for me to make changes on the move.

Regardless of the genre, Ineos Grenadier mixes rugged functionality with a quality and substance that is rarely seen in this segment. All the controls are a good weight, that’s what you won’t feel in if you have gotten into ’70 Series LandCruiser or Jeep Wrangler/Gladiator (although it’ll be expected to be more expensive than they should be).
The materials elsewhere are markedly better, too, as is the case with . Besides upmarket upholstery, all versions of the Grenadier have a chunky Nappa leather steering wheel and handbrake lever as standard; plastics used for the upper door cards, dash and centre console are soft to the touch.
However, if I want to buy the Grenadier for weekend duties at the same time, I can’t see any buyers complaining that it is ‘too nice’. None of the finishes are so soft they’re likely to wear much worse than those found in rival off-roaders.
Despite the cabin technology, there is some room for complaint about it (although not necessarily all) . My biggest gripe is that there’s no driver display or head-up display. Instead, Ineos has re-invented Tesla by showing speed on the infotainment screen (which is distracting during everyday driving). That is a sense of , but it does make more sense when driving off-road.

Besides, awkward speedo positioning aside, the 12 are also s. A. winner 3-inch infotainment system is the one that has been proven to be a winning idea for , and also in – an Infotaneous 3 inch (i.e. The screen is responsive, visually sharp and brimming with relevant functionality; operated by touch or a central rotary controller (button-sharp), operation that displays attitude, temperature, pathfinder, vehicle statistics and electrical information.
Or, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are just a tap away (no wired connection required) with the app. Mobile phone charging does, however, require a cable – USB-A or USBC. In the centre console storage area, there is also a 12V power outlet.
For cabin storage, the Grenadier doesn’t offer you quite as much what you expect from a car with such high-strength exterior dimensions. The centre console bin described above is shallow, the door bins are not suitable for a large drink bottle and the tray behind the gear selector isn’t deep enough to be used in ‘a modern smartphone’. don’t go bank on a big glovebox, either. Ineos left me unprepared for a vehicle that was designed to travel and long distance adventuring, but I am not impressed with this.
So does second-row liveability sound like a . A normal side step makes it easier to get in and out, but if you’re not careful enough for the head to be banged. Further affects accessibility The back doors don’t open particularly wide, causing the reverse to be more affected by what’s more.

A back bench inside is firm and upright, but not awkward… unless you’re particularly tall. I say that because outboard legroom is a problem for anyone topping six-two, and while cutouts are in the hard plastic seatbacks to fit on knees, it’s still tight. A little less room for that sod sat in the middle seat, whose legroom is severely hindered by the transmission tunnel, there’s even more room to do so.
But rear headroom, on a more positive note, isn’t an issue because the Grenardier has soaring, boxy style. And while there is no glass overhead, a series of large square windows ensures good natural lighting and outward visibility.
Rear passengers also benefit from the same premium materials found up front, which serve to elevate the experience.
For facilities, you will get USB-A and USB–C outlets, dual air vents and seatback storage nets (although no centre armrest is a feature), but no seats. No cupholders are also included in that definition, and any possibility of keeping drinks in the door cards is diminished by how hard it is to reach this storage area when the doors are closed.

All three rear seats are equipped with top tether anchor points for child seats.
Surely the boot is not compromise-free? If so, at least once you overcome the awkward opening process of split-opening barn doors, a boot-mounted spare wheel and an optional ladder.
You’ll have a luggage area that’s very useful, behind all the exterior bits and pieces you’ll find. It is a large open aperture, perfectly square and without any load lip for starters (for example) with no opening aperture. It’s so easy to load heavy stuff like that, as such.
In addition, the floor is covered in durable plastic rather than carpet so you can stick just about anything in the back without worrying that it will cause serious damage. Eight tie-down points are located on the floor and walls, plus a 12V power outlet for more utility.

The rear bench folds in a 60/40 split to unlock up as much as 2088L of cargo capacity, whether the second row is empty.
A roomy tray of 1564mm long, 1619mm wide and 485mm deep is provided by the Quartermaster ute instead of a big boot; 1137mm between the wheel-arches are in this room. This ‘fits with a standard 1200x800mm Euro pallet’ and has four tie-down rings and 400W power outlet.
But payload is 907kg for petrol variants and 832kg (better than the Gladiator) – but low on LandCruiser 70 Series.
The Quartermaster is also less sexy than its SUV sibling, and has no rear legroom as a family car. Both models are essentially the same model from the B-pillar forward.

What’s under the bonnet?
Two BMW-sourced inline-six engines are available – petrol or diesel, and it’s a choice. They both are paired with an automatic transmission from ZF of eight-speed, power delivered to all four wheels via a permanent 4WD system (two- speed transfer case).

How does the Ineos Grenadier drive?
The Grenadier drives, in a way that is more like ‘big ladder-frame, solid-axle four-wheel drive’ put simply. But it’s that to say, great off-road and a little less so on the road,” said .

No one who has driven similar cars in the past will be surprised by this, but it isn’t home for the Grenadier to eat at his house in cut and thrust of a concrete jungle. It’s heavy, cumbersome, loud and thirsty with steering that’d still be heavy and prone to vagueness just off centre.
However, the aforementioned steering system is one of many changes over systems in Pre-facelift Grenaded Grinadier’s standard. But in fact, the new model has a more confident look around town and wanders far less at higher speeds than ever before steering corrections are required to hold an lane.
And while the Grenadier exposes its residents to more noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) than your standard family SUV, it feels almost refined like a 70 Series.
The engines of its are infinitely more satisfying to operate, too. A buttery smooth petrol inline six is hard to redline and pulls the ‘hard-tored’ petrol intoline, which has been described as being an integral part of its formula. And it makes a lovely noise, especially on startup, even though many SUVs are now in the same state as they are today.

While most Grenadier buyers aren’t looking for the sexiest power or any kind of satisfaction, with only 20 per cent of Station Wagon sales being made from the petrol. But instead, the most gravitate towards the diesel (which is louder and less pleasant) but makes sense more for long-distance touring and hard yakka.
Both engines are punchier than the four-cylinder donks in the 70 Series and Jeep Wrangler, which is important. Similarly, with that said, “if performance on the blacktop is priority,” you’d rather be stretching to a supercharged V8 Defender.
The Grenadier isn’t the most comfortable SUV on the road, regardless of how you spec it. This suspension is very firm and you feel every lump or bump on the surface, although none shockwave through your spine while others blow up a bit. So, while it can’t be soft or plush, it’s okay to do everyday work.
But if you’re firm, come the weekend, that means some discomfort when long-distance touring is on your nerves. A mod cons such as adaptive cruise control are not included in any discomfort, and so is the case of paraphrar. But it’s worth remembering what this adventure machine competes with again.

It applies to the Grenadier’s handling of tarmac, which is better than direct competitors in comparison to road-focused unibody SUVs. Still, none of the cars in this sub-segment (such as being pushed up on an old twisty street; no different Grenadier; its dynamic ceiling is low; pushing such a limit leads to lots of body roll followed by slipping grip from the BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres.
But from the moment you venture off the blacktop, it’s a completely different story.
When the going gets tough, it’s often said that when they get hard, the hardest go and the Grenadier is as bad as they come. The thing is a chunky off-road tyres, protective armour and ample ground clearance.’ I mean, just look at the thing.
There’s a lot of toughness under the sheet metal, but that’t just shy of that. The Grenadier has a locking centre differential as standard, with the Trialmaster adding locking front and rear differentials.

The launch drive programme was based on fire trails at the base of Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano complex near Orange, NSW, where all three were in use.
On the move you can lock and unlock centre diff – no need to shift into neutral. But moving from high to low does require a shift of gear, for example, . This requires some muscle, as the diff locks in the Grenadier are mechanically pure (in nature) and it also needs a bit of force. This means that the whole process can be a bit finicky, as is the case with s.
Get over that and the Grenadier proves itself to be incredibly powerful. In fact, this was a way that our ‘moderate’ difficulty off-roading felt effortless sending the dry, rocky fire trails we crossed with little fuss.
High ground clearance, strong wading ability and extensive underbody protection give you confidence that scrapes and knock will not cause serious damage; dedicated off-road and wadering drive modes are a lot of configurability depending on the terrain.

Regardless of the technicality of terrain, it is also possible for an easy position to place the Grenadier with accuracy due to high seating position and short overhangs.
The responsibility is solely with the driver, as it has said that it doesn’t boast the advanced camera technology found in something like a Wrangler or GWM Tank. Despite the fact that mistakes are rarely punished, due to the articulation provided by the beam axles of the Ineos’ beam.
However, Ineos models do not come with Hill descent control; this is a perfect example of how to work flawlessly in the field of . The traction management systems, as well as the Grenadier’s ability to digest jagged rocks and uneven terrain without getting stuck in it, are similar to those of the tractors that allow for their own consumption.
It’s probably obvious by now, but anything with an Ineos badge is going to be a strong performer off-road.

How much does the Ineos Grenadier cost to run?
All versions of the Grenadier are backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Ineos doesn’t offer capped-price servicing for its vehicles.

Its 24-strong dealer network may be a distraction for prospective buyers, which is very different from Toyota’s huge reach. Ineos says it is “going above and beyond to provide quick access to parts, repairs and servicing right across the country,” in a statement that InEo’s said.

The Grenadier is a compelling option for those after an old-school workhorse.

Which is better for you camping, fishing or off-roading, towing (or doing a lot of hard work)?
This is the Grenadier that absolutely thrives off-road; its mechanical diff locks, excellent articulation, generous ground clearance and general strength all combine perfectly.
Yet, it is still suck on the smooth stuff. If you don’t want to exploit the hardcore skills of Grenadier but still want a tough cruise around the suburbs, buy’Defender instead.
Similarly, some of the Grenadier’s competitors hit the same high notes as others the 70 Series and Wrangler. The cabin quality and overall polish of the pair are not equal, though both offer a level for ‘s sake.

So as such, it becomes a question of what you value in ‘this car like this’. If you have Toyota covered long-term reliability, resale value and manufacturer support top the priority list?
However, if you’re after something that feels slightly more out of the box (both in terms of versatility and standard equipment), it’s worth visiting your closest Ineos showroom.
