Toyota Australia is starting to get serious about electric vehicles (EVs) in this market.

Up against an onslaught of electric offerings from China and elsewhere, the Japanese auto giant has upped the ante with an updated and upgraded version of its first EV, the bZ4X mid-size electric SUV.
The standard spec was improved, given that it has more EV driving range and slightly styling upgrade (along with the addition of buyer incentives), as well as its low-budget pricing, Toyota’s increased price tag added to their standard model Spec. The brand pushed hard especially for the entry-level 2WD variant tested here, and so has done it particularly hard for this year’s version of .
So, is the bZ4X finally the EV with which the world’s biggest automaker can compete with the top-selling Tesla Model Y? Read on to find out.
How much does the Toyota bZ4X cost?
This is how Toyota could win over coin-conscious customers – significantly lower list pricing, and extra incentives for buyers, too.

It’s a massive $10,010 price cut for the entry-level single-motor front-wheel drive (2WD) model that was its predecessor but it adds apparently thousands of bucks worth more equipment and tech.
Meanwhile, the all-wheel drive (AWD) flagship now starts at $67,990 plus on-roads – down $6910.
Please see below all the new stuff that’s been added to this base model – as well as the huge price cut.
More, in another plus for customers who buy before the end of 2026 there is a bit of incentive for private charging (free 7kW Jet Charge system for your home or office) and public charging (12 month or 625kWh credit at Chargefox locations)?

And for private buyers, Toyota Australia may offer a $5000 “limited-time deposit contribution” of $5000-for the bZ4X 2WD and $7500 for the AWD (if you buy through the company’s finance arm).
Toyota’s move follows recent price cuts by Subaru for its updated Solterra, the bZ4X’s twin, of between $6000 and $7000.
But if you’re okay with less gear and you want to buy a Toyota car, it should be noted that there are still lots of old bZ4X cars in stock for far less than the new model cost…

What is the Toyota bZ4X like on the inside?
The biggest interior adaptation of the bZ4X’s newer touchscreen media system, which also serves as control centre for nearly all major functions in the car, is its addition to an expanded touchscreen technology that has become the largest change on most recent models.

A more high-tech experience is the bigger display, which rises from a 12 in. 3-inch screen to a more squared-off 14″ Models of Lexus models 0-inch unit, known as a .
In some ways it feels a bit unfinished, and in many ways is it the software setup of its own Toyota group products running that runs on top of this system. A bit of a misplaced menus are some, and you might struggle to make adjustments to many things when the car is moving. And that can be a bit of annoyance to s.
And while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wirelessly available, the software will also limit things like navigation address inputs when you’re driving (unless you speak it) and that can be hit and miss right?
My favorite thing about the system is that there is a hard-set panel at the bottom where you can adjust your car settings, including’separate safety and car setting adjustments’; dials for climate control settings (also known as “climatic controls”). Touch buttons for fan speed, steering wheel and seat heating controls are available on-screen touch buttons; further below the touchscreen you’ll find buttons to demister controls of front & rear windscreens (and mirrors!)

The controls are basic and simple, really, compared to many of the bZ4X’s rivals that embrace the touchscreen-ageddon approach.
The driver is also equipped with a number of physical buttons on the steering wheel, such as cruise control/lane trace triggers, plus volume and media controls; the stalks are traditional, too.
Between the seats is a push-and-twist gear selector dial, and ‘Park button’ buttons not to mention electric park brake/auto-hold function or Snow and Eco Mode buttons; camera view button for quick glimpse of your surroundings.
The addition of twin wireless phone charging docks is one huge plus for the bZ4X, which makes it useful for couples to easily dump their phones in. A few phones may move a bit, depending on the cover fitted to some phones, but beware of this.


Under those chargers is a place for your owner’s manual or logbooks, because the bZ4X doesn’t have – it frees up some space – but may not be useful to all owners.
It’s a good idea to store drinks, with cup holsters between the seats and bottle holders in the doors of bottles (though those pocket sections aren’t lined) but drink storage is well considered. The seat is a centre console bin with ‘dual-directional lids’ between the seats (i.e., can open towards the passenger or away from them) and has been dual-directed to both sides of the car’s front–the rear/backside for s.
There is an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and illuminated vanity mirrors overhead but the visors aren’t extendable. grab handles for every person living in a paraphrasing and there are grab handle.
The seats? Comfy, supportive and thankfully with a bit of ‘the design flourished to them’ because otherwise it’s – rather than – he’ll be… & feel more cave-like by the dark headliner.

The driver is given electric seat adjustment, the passenger has manual adjustment only – be careful and taller passengers may have a little high-set.
The second row has a reasonable space, with room for’six-foot adult to slot in behind another (though the toe room is tight and knees-up position too) but it’s. But rear legroom is actually pretty good, and there’s a lot of room to fit three across if needed.
A good headroom, though, will be a fair amount of space for grown-ups to have. grab handle overhead but at the edges of the cabin you won’t find lighting for the back passengers – instead, there’s centre dome light.
They have ISOFIX-point window seats, and there are three top-tethers for child seat fitment as well; if you’re not at the middle spot, it has a flip-down armrest with cupholders.

The rear seatbacks also offer a level of recline, ensuring longer trips should be nap-friendly.
The seatbacks have directional air-vents, map pockets on the seats, door pockets with bottle holders and soft padding on doors where your elbows sit, too.
A pair of USB-C ports for rear riders, as well as two up front drivers, are also used to care for and charging.
There is even more to be said about power outlets, with a new 1500W/220V power point in the rear for vehicle-to-load capability. It would be a good idea to use camping gear or appliances from there, and then you could put things on the car’s battery pack so that everything goes smoothly. nicer Nice.

Some clever additions to the boot, such as a retractable cargo cover, but there are some good hooks for shopping bags that go too far back into the boots area (my shopping went flying) and I’m sure it was useful.
Boot space is wide, and with 421 litres for the 2WD model (410L in the AWD) there is a usable amount of space here. There is even a hidden under-floor cargo area for cable storage, and you could also put your tyre repair kit there – because no spare spare.

The performance bump of this bZ4X has been good (15kW more power and 2x) for this model (as perphraser). The most appealing thing about it is the bump in battery capacity that makes it more attractive, like 6Nm of extra torque), but this’s what a calls its appeal.
WLTP testing It makes sense for the money, as with an extra (155km) of EV range that is already in place. Just shy of 600km for this type of cash from the country’s most renowned brand? Appealing may be understating it!
The AC charging is excellent for the class too (many still only 7kW AC), but you will need three-phase power to get maximum 22kW charging speed. A powerful DC fast-charge rate (though class-leading) is 150kW, but not the high speed that it has imposed on its own power.
I saw the efficiency on test as a . I was impressed with my performance and am amazed by it. I returned 14 kilometres of driving, more than a hundred kilometers (including highway, commuting, urban and mixed testing) of road-going traffic. 4kWh per 100km. I was on course to go over 515km from a full charge, and that’s the best way for me,” .

How does the Toyota bZ4X drive?
Those who are more fun and comfortful than the mid-size electric SUV segment, however, don’t choose the driver’s choice there is no one out there that makes the bZ4X an option.

Not saying this is an EV, that’s shocker for me. ‘It’ just seems the point of these updates were to improve value equation and liveability provisions rather than drive experience.
I don’t hate it, and you probably won’t either.
But the suspension isn’t as well sorted as with rivals like, say, the Volkswagen ID.4. It’s sharp feeling and can be lumpy over uneven surfaces at speeds above 40km/h, where at lower speeds it’s not too bad. On the freeway it settles a bit, but it’s never cosy or cushy over bumps and lumps.
The steering is predictable enough, and easy to turn for parking moves but also reassuringly weighted at highway pace.

When choosing the 2WD model that the tyres at the front axle can be powered by the electric motor in wet weather, just keep yourself aware. I even had some moments of feeling understeer as the Tyrs don’t give me the best grip.
Unless you live in a rain-prone area or encounter unsealed surfaces regularly, the AWD may be ‘better bet on it’. Just buy some good tyres… or just buy one of the best s?
This type of app is a perfect fit for the motor; it’s not ‘powerhouse, but does provide instant-torque urgency that EVs are known for.
A multi-stage regenerative braking system is helping it keep the battery as charged as possible, but annoyingly it seems to repeatedly return to a less aggressive setting every time you restart the car.

When you choose the most aggressive regen setting, it will be almost like a single-pedal driving experience (in most cases when you can drive the car with just the throttle). When it comes to a complete stop without you being uphill, it’s not going down to the crawl or slow down.
The pedal feel is fine outside the regen system, but still suffers from a lack of linearity to the pedal progress.
A better level of refinement would be, as the bZ4X suffers in part from road noise intrusion at highway speed (especially when the road is a coarse-chip surface) and thus may have been an important factor in its overall decline in terms of finer levels.
There’s no bad safety technology integration – you can easily turn off the lane-keeping tech by tapping the shortcut on screen menu when you don’t like it, and the speed sign recognition system doesn’T chime at you incessantly, or even worse either. It’s a bit annoying, but the new driver monitoring camera system that has been added isn’t even possible to turn off when you’re driving.

The existing Toyota bZ4X already had a five-star ANCAP rating from 2022 testing.

How much does the Toyota bZ4X cost to run?
The standard cover is a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty for the vehicle in its entirety.

In addition to that, if you service your bZ4X on time – every 12 months or 15,000km – you will have seven years of warranty for the electric motors. But some EV rivals are shorter than those intervals, which only need to be serviced every two years and many even have long periods of up to 40,000km… so the commuters out there may be better off shopping around.
meanwhile, the high-voltage battery warranty can be extended to up to 10 years if you service with Toyota as the brand will conduct a health check at each service.
The servicing price is capped at $180 for the first five years or 75,000km.
But besides that you have to pay extra for roadside help at Toyota – even though almost every other brand throws it in for free.

The updated bZ4X 2WD is a far more compelling option than it used to be.

With the price cuts and upgrade to equipment, it is a leap from pretender to contender; this marks ‘the seismic adjustment for Japanese giant’s ambitions in Australia’.
The bZ4X is much easier to recommend than it used to be, especially in 2WD spec.
