2026 Toyota HiLux-based Fortuner spied still no-go for Australia

TheToyota Fortunerseven-seat SUV was axed in Australia in 2025 without a replacement being announced, but a new generation has been spied testing.

Images of an updated version of the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X rival were published by the Kurdistan Automotive Blog, showing a disguised Fortuner on a truck in Thailand, where it’s made alongside the Toyota HiLux and other models.

The new Fortuner – which is still on sale in Australia until stocks dry up – uses the ladder-frame chassis of Toyota HiLux ute, 2 with its ladder frame chassis. 4-wheel drive four-cylinder engine and six speed automatic transmission with 8 litre turbo-diesel eight-litres, which is the most powerful type of car in its history.

The updated model is likely to follow the new-generation HiLux it will be based on, which retained the same doors, roof, tub and underpinnings as its predecessor.

The camouflaged Fortuner looks to have followed the ‘squatting sumo’ front-end styling theme of the new HiLux – which was led by Toyota Australia Design – with styling tweaks to the rear end.

A similar look to the HiLux interior, which was commissioned by the Australian design team but led out of Japan, is also expected in the Fortuner cabin (which has been designed and built up for its own purpose).

It has no plans for the introduction of the new model to Australia, and still contains several months of stock of its current model (240 examples delivered in January 2026), Toyota Australia told childcareman.xyz that it had not yet launched the updated model.
