2026 Toyota HiLux BEV: New electric ute priced for Australia

A small fleet-focused lineup featuring two body styles and one dual-motor all wheel drive powertrain is launching the first electric ute in Australia, with Toyota’s latest line-up of twin models.

The 2026 Toyota HiLux BEV is arriving in showrooms in the second quarter (April to June) of 2026, priced from $74,990 before on-road costs for the base SR dual-cab/chassis.

Also available in dual-cab pickup configuration is the SR trim at $76,490 before on-roads, with an HDLux BEV line top of HiLuv’s hilux (advertently priced) double- Cab pickup $82,990 prior to on road costs.

Therefore the most expensive members of the HiLux lineup are those that have diesel power tops out at $71,990 before on-road costs in Rogue or Rugged X trim, with their electric utes being used as an alternative to gasoline.

Power and torque outputs for the HiLux BEV aren’t far off the diesel-powered HiLux.

A dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain is available, with 82kW/206Nm front and 129kW/269Nnm rear electric motors for total system outputs of 144kW and 468NM.

A diesel HiLux, in contrast, delivers 150kW of power and between 420Nm and 500Nm of torque depending on the transmission.

The HiLux BEV has 59 words. A 10-to-80 per cent charge is said to take “as little as 30 minutes” – and 2kWh lithium-ion battery that can be fast-charged at up to 150kW on DC power.

Also, it supports 10kW three-phase AC charging (which is said to take about 6 – 100 per cent charge) on which the 10-to100 percent charge can be charged. 5 hours ago.

A driving range figure has yet to be finalised, Toyota says, but is ‘anticipated to have a total of 315km on the NEDC cycle’.

The HiLux BEV is a full-time all-wheel drive vehicle, with torque distribution varyably controlled between the front and rear axles of the car when on-road driving; six terrain modes are available for off- road driving.

The HiLux BEV also has its own “uniquely developed suspension system” of frame reinforcements, beefed-up MacPherson strut front suspension and a De Dion live axle with leaf spring setup at the rear. It also has ventilated disc brakes and regenerative braking.

Braked towing capacity is 2000kg, well down on the 3500kg offered by the diesel HiLux and both the MG U9 EV and LDV eTerron 9 expected for Australia.

Toyota meanwhile, however, says it has conducted a “comprehensive and sustained testing program in conjunction with leading mining fleets”, HiLux BEVs tested on various off-road terrain and in high temperature remote outback operations.

The HiLux BEV differs from the diesel-powered range, with a closed-off upper front grille and “aerodynamically enhanced” 17-inch alloy wheels.

The SR5 adds:

It’s only the HiLux BEV in Glacier White, Frosted White and Ash Slate exterior paint finishes – you can get it for an extra $675 – which is another clue as to who this car is targeted at fleets.

Toyota, which is targeting only 500 sales of the HiLux EV in Australia this year for its targeted target audience are mostly mining, construction and government fleet buyers.

This may be Australia’s best-selling electric ute, but it will also make the HiLux EV one of those low-volume ‘lowest’ versions of Down Under.

It’s a very exciting time for Toyota; adding an electric version of the much-loved HiLux pickup, it finally offers businesses and fleets low emissions motoring with Toyota’S large parts and servicing network.’ In reopening press release, John Pappas, vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations, said Toyota Australia had been in business news coverage that was ‘innovating’ to offer lower emission motor technology as well as its extensive components and services system.

The HiLux BEV has been tested by Toyota in the past months on mine sites at temperatures near 50°C, so that this new powertrain will work with the tried-and-tested Hi Lux diesel.

“Customers looking to make the switch to an electric pickup now have the backing of Toyota quality, durability and reliability.”

There are just two other electric utes currently on sale in Australia: the more expensive LDV eT60, a single-motor rear-wheel drive dual-cab; and the KGM Musso EV, a unibody dual-cab launched last year with either single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations.

LDV and MG are expected to launch their respective eTerron 9 and U9 EV twins Down Under, though timing for these electric utes remains unconfirmed. Isuzu is also expected to launch an electric D-Max.
