2026 MG 4 EV Urban to enter Australias growing budget EV segment next month

In April 2026, the MG 4 EV Urban has been confirmed to be coming to Australia after it will become an increasingly diverse group of cut-price electric vehicles (EVs) that will take on a growing population of new electric hatchbacks.

Unlike the existing MG 4, which offers a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, the MG 4 Urban will be offered exclusively as a single-motor front-wheel drive EV.

It will be available with 43kWh or 54kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, although pricing and specifications have not yet been announced.

The company previously confirmed the MG 4 EV Urban would sit alongside an updated version of the existing MG 4, which will lose its 51kWh and 77kWh batteries and offer only a 64kWh pack.

In overseas markets, an overhauled interior has been introduced to the MG 4’s inner-working of its own brand recently revealed for the right-hand drive UK market. The MG Motor Australia has been in touch with us to confirm when the new m 4 is due here.

MG 4 EV Urban (new) cuts the new MB 4 by £6500 (A$12,400) in the UK market. MG 4 The current range is $37,990 and will be on-road in Australia (although the new offers offer even the drive-away pricing under that figure).

We’d expect the price tag for the MG 4 EV Urban to be much closer to $30,000 than $40,000, though it’s unclear at this stage if it’ll slide in under the $30k mark like the BYD Dolphin Essential ($29,990 before on-road costs).

While detailed specifications are yet to be made available for Australia, the MG 4 ‘EV Urban’ is already on sale in right-hand drive guise in the UK market.

In the MG 4 EV Urban, it is driven by the Chinese automaker’s new E3 platform which has torsion-beam rear suspension rather than multi-link independent setup like in the M 4.

It’s 4395mm long, 1842MM wide and 1551m high with a 2750mm wheelbase; it is 108-metres longer, 6–6mm wider and up to 47mm taller than the current (MG 4) on 58mm longer wheelsbase.

Boot capacity is 568-577 litres measured to the roof, expanding to 1364L with the rear seats folded.

Its front-mounted motor is 110kW to 118kW and 250Nm of torque, giving the electric hatch an estimated power source. That gives a claimed 0-100km/h time of between 9 and 11 as it is said by . 5 and 9 ? The variant, depending on the ‘s length, may be 6 seconds.

It is claimed that the battery takes 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent on a 150kW DC fast-charger; 11kW AC charging can also be supported by the MG 4 EV Urban.

WLTP range is 325km with the smaller battery and between 405km and 416km with the larger battery.

The MG 4 EV Urban has 12 s inside, at least in the UK market. 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 7-“. A 0-inch digital instrument cluster is an example of .

The equipment available includes ambient lighting, heated front seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, wireless phone charger (and’recognisable’ camera with lucid chassis mode) and surrounded-view camera.

According to MG Motor Australia, in its press release today, “As cost of living is still on top of mind and petrol prices are going up and down as drivers can read the sign, the fully electric EV Urban offers more cost certainty and freedom from fuel price volatility.”

Within the small electric hatchback segment, the MG 4 has battled two other affordable Chinese models: the BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora.

The GAC Aion UT is due here during the second quarter of 2026, ahead of the Geely EX2 in the second half of 2026; Chery is also expected to join the fray, too.

The price tag for the likes of MG, Geely and GAC to beat is that of the BYD Atto 1, launched late in 2025. Significantly smaller than all of these other affordable electric hatches, it’s priced from just $23,990 before on-road costs. It’s unclear if any of these larger models, however, will be priced quite as low as the BYD.
