Who said people movers have to be boring?

Zeekr clearly missed the memo, because the all-wheel drive 009 is far from your average family shuttle.

To begin with, it’s powered by two electric motors producing 450kW and 693Nm. No, that’s not a typo and yes, that makes it more powerful than a Porsche 911 GT3.

Beyond bonkers performance, the 009 also offers all the latest tech and an interior more luxurious than some penthouse apartments.

Despite the fact that s don’t pay it’s not cheap. A Six-seat variant is the most expensive Chinese car in Australia right now at nearly $140k before on-road costs. What is the meaning of ? It may be worth it.

How much does the Zeekr 009 cost?

The Zeekr 009 is positioned at the upper end of the people mover market, sitting below only the Lexus LM and Mercedes-Benz V-Class on the price spectrum.

Tested here is the six-seat all-wheel drive, $139,900 before on-road costs. That’s the same as lower-spec versions of the V-Class, and some $25,000 less than the equivalent Lexus.

Nevertheless, you can save another $24,000 by dropping down to the base 009 FWD (which loses all-paw traction) and has a weaker 250kW/373Nm single-motor powertrain.

What is the Zeekr 009 like on the inside?

Australians flock to European brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi for a luxury car experience but Zeekr deserves ‘the table seat’.

The Chinese automaker may not be able to have the runs on board, but the 009 makes a huge statement as an ultra-premium people mover that can hold its own against just about anything, regardless of price.

Starting up front, the 009 doesn’t treat its driver as a second-class citizen, even if they’re not the main focus.

The cabin is designed to minimize the discomfort and stress associated with professional steerers and busy parents, which often require long periods behind the wheel.

Nappa leather seats are soft and supportive, for example a wide base cushion with sculpted headrests that care the back of your head. There is also a wide range of electric adjustment in both front pews as well as heating, ventilation and five different massage programs. It’s easy to get comfortable and stay that way when you’re driving for a long time, as is the case with .

A premium selection of interior materials also makes the 009 an upmarket option. It has a lovely smooth steering wheel withpronounced thumb grips outside plush seats, while other high-traffic areas are generously padded and trimmed in leather or suede. At most hard plastics are barely able to be used as hard-plastics, with .

Sadly, it seems Zeekr has reserved its worst finishes for the few physical buttons you’ll see in the 009. This is a shame, as it’s not uncommon for the driver to interact with them and has been known that the steering wheel buttons and window switches feel very cheap.

Thankfully there aren’t more buttons then, as operation of the 009 relies heavily on use of the 15-inch infotainment screen.

A big rectangular touchscreen, which is the control centre of the 009 and placed well in proximity to all key functions, provides easy access to everything that can be done.

These include basic features such as smartphone mirroring and climate controls, plus extras you don’t see elsewhere.

For one, all front- and second-row seats can be positioned by the screen; there are several preset layouts for each event to suit. The ‘First Class Executive’ mode, which slid the front passenger seat forward to give the second-row passenger maximum legroom, will probably be popular with chauffeurs. Also, it can also be used to activate rear seat heating, ventilation and massage from the driver’s seat.

If that’s not enough to impress your special guests, you can further annoy them by remotely operating the rear window blinds and ceiling-mounted entertainment screen.

Despite the configurability described above, it is useful for those in the second row but there’s also plenty of options available for driver native navigation, an app store and internet browsing via Vivaldi. What is the question “who needs apps” in their car? Well, it’s not hard to imagine a paid driver enjoying some YouTube between jobs or businessperson watching if they are going to televise – after school drop-off.

While all of these features can suck an infotainment system, Zeekr has worked well to make sure it is user-friendly. The edges of screen are dotted with shortcuts to popular functions, each clearly marked and logically placed. There’s no escape from the number of icons that are at any one time, so if you can’t get away with them all in one go, you quickly learn how to navigate through them.

Navigating this elaborate system is made easier by its visual quality, and how responsive it is to touch inputs.

The slick infotainment screen is complimented by a neatly integrated digital driver display that displays everything you could possibly know and nothing more. Alternatively, navigation mapping can be seen here (handily), and basic directions are also shown on the above head-up display.

A 30-speaker Yamaha sound system rounds out the technology suite is a 30-spearer audio system that can be used to fill the 009 with high quality audio. The front and rear head restraints of speakers help create a truly immersive soundscape, while the entire system can be tuned to suit all manner of preferences.

A second strength is storage space, another of the strongest words to . There is a roomy tray with USB-C connectivity under the centre bridge and door bins are wide enough to swallow ‘big drink bottle’. nice if the glovebox was slightly bigger, but it’s good for to say that.

The infotainment screen contains a wireless charging pad, but it only stores’smart smartphone after you’ve first tapped the key card to start the car.

Ultimately, it’s pleasure to sit up front in the 009. But I’d say it’s even more a privilege to sit one row back and be like .

The back doors slide to reveal a light, airy compartment with dedicated armrests and an attractive array of amenities heating, ventilation (in addition to massage), electric recline, adjustable headrest; sliding seat bases and powered leg rest extensions.

passenger space is more than enough even before any changes are made to . It’s not a change, either because use of the third row doesn’t mean that. But if comfort isn’t an issue, then it’s not just that.

And you don’t have to worry about a lack of facilities, like . While it is difficult to determine what the starting point of s are, there’s no better place than any 17-inch OLED entertainment system.

The front of the screen folds down from the ceiling and allows passengers to access YouTube, TikToki, Netflix and internet browsing – everything you need for a mobile cinema experience or some streaming on the go. During my relationship, my partner and I even went to a concert movie date night (the quality of the atmosphere generated by sensational sound quality and dynamic ambient lighting that pulses with beaten beat).

In some ways, the setup in this Zeekr is actually better than your local cinema. The 009 is the kind of privacy you can’t get when around herds of rowdy teenagers. Hoyts and Village don’t offer a small fridge to keep your drinks or snacks cool, either last time I checked.

That’s ok, because this super-van has more to offer you back-seat screen time and that’d be fine. Those who are working at work may be asked to pop out their tray table and tackle that urgent project, while tired travellers can simply recline, put up the window shades and get some shuteye.

Similarly, there are many traditional facilities for s, as well as the usual amenities. Throughout the second row, USB-C outlets are scattered throughout the two rows and storage cubbies of different shapes and sizes are also available. This includes small details such as classy analogue-style clock displays in each door, which complete the package with a smaller number of doors.

Moving back further, the third row is among the best you’ll find in any people mover.

This is a comfortable seat position, with my knees touching back of the seat in front and I was sitting comfortably at 6-one because it’s easier to get electric adjustment for the second-row seats. Headroom isn’t a problem either, nor does it matter to .

The second row has a lot of features to keep everyone happy as is the case with USB-C outlets and cup holders, reading lights, air vents, window shades and armrests; more than if one could name some. In addition to that, passengers on the third row of the theater are clearly able to see the entertainment screen.

A Mercedes-Benz EQV or Kia Carnival is 574 litres of boot space with all three rows of seating placed on top, less than you get in ‘Meltus LM’ but five times the capacity of a Lexus L. When you drop that third row of the , it grows because if you dropped this number, which unfortunately can’t be removed or folded anywhere near flat.

An additional 29 litres of cargo can be found under the bonnet and an old spare is replaced with another tyre repair kit.

What’s under the bonnet?

The all-wheel drive versions of the 009 include an electric powertrain that is in its capacity (116kWh) and a dual motor battery pack, which has been described as rocketing this big bus up to 100km/h within just 4 hours. 5 seconds.

But for a people mover, that performance is unheard of; and the 009 supports it with alleged ranges of 582km (i.e.

But we didn’t get the efficiency to hit such a number. We were 45 per cent worse than Zeekr claimed, Rather; we doubted that it was true that the figure would be relevant in real life.

The other hand, the sub-par payload of the 009 is very relevant. The 009 has no room for luggage after you have six or seven adults on board with a carrying capacity of 560kg. How does the Zeekr 009 drive?

In its flagship all-wheel drive form, the Zeekr 009 is unlike any people mover I’ve ever driven.

Because, while I’ve steered electric vans before, none can claim to be quite as capable as this 450kW/693Nm monster.

In this segment, the 009 is really different from all other alternatives to its performance as it performs. The kind of brutal acceleration you just don’t expect from a 2 is the type of hard throttle inputs that are applied to Firm throttle. This is a 9-tonne behemoth like this.

The speed of the 009 pick up is impressively smooth and predictable, too it doesn’t get traction from a standing start; at the front end does it lift like an airboat. While both pedals can be modulated easily, and with the smooth acceleration of braking, also has been calibrated to ensure that operation is easy.

It is a strong argument that no chauffeur vehicle/family chariot needs to be this fast. But, at the same time, it’s not like you’re forced to use all power. You’d rather have some humour than being stuck with a slow bus that isn’t going, as many of you do.

In Worst case, if it all becomes too intimidating to put the 009 into ‘Comfort’ mode and dumb down the throttle response, you can turn this 09 in. Just buy the cheaper single-motor variant or just buy that .

If you drop down to the FWD, and don’t go backwards it makes driving fun for the 009 because no one-trick pony.

Regardless of motor count, the 009 is an example of virtues of an electric people mover. Near-silence, it effectively eliminates outside noise – exactly what you want from a luxury model (especially one that allows passengers to watch movies in the back)).

As the cabin is quiet, it’s also a relaxing car to drive for long hours of time (not just on highway and in city), as well as at least by the calmness of the 009.

But despite its sheer size, that’s not the biggest hurdle you might think is in your opinion as big a challenge as That’. The 009, in contrast, is actually quite manoeuvrable by the use of light steering, good body control and great forward visibility.

Similarly, parking is quite straightforward (at least for a 5 minute) . A 2-metre-long minivan is a mini van with. This is the straight-edged body shape that helps to line up a space and there’s no shortage of useful cameras at your disposal. The use of tilting side mirrors helps prevent bad curb scrape.

The 009 is easy to drive or park, but VIPs in the back won’t care all that much about whether it rides well or not. There are all versions of the 009 ride on adaptive air suspension, with height adjustment via the infotainment screen (see details) on that topic.

The system, in its softest environment, largely absorbs the harshness of potholes, and ruts and other imperfections that protect residents from any discomfort. The trade-off for that is a very slow primary ride, though, suffered most of the time over speed bumps and long derulation. It can sometimes feel like you’re driving a jumping castle on wheels, which is nauseating in large doses.

I liked driving the 009 in ‘Sport’ mode as such, which tightens up suspension travel just enough to make the whole experience feel more controlled without losing comfort. This also helps to greatly improve handling of the car as it reduces body roll through corners. But with that said, the chassis never feels overly wobby.

Besides several pre-configured drive modes, the 009 allows for adjustments to the intensity of regenerative braking. And that’s a pattern many drivers follow when switching between city and highway driving – which is the case with paraphrasingr.

And there’s also a full suite of advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) on board, not all of which actually help practice in the real world. The default-sensitive driver attention monitoring system is quite sensitive, although the warning chime isn’t too loud; vehicle proximity warnings sound more often than desired. The infotainment system is a way to fight that, by turning off some of the safety aids in the best way possible.

And yet, there is nothing to say about the heavy-handed semi-autonomous driving tech that makes micro-corrections and wrenches the wheel around in your hands. Since chauffeurs run people to and from airport, Lane centring has been an important feature of the system that Zeekr will have to fine-tune going forward.

How much does the Zeekr 009 cost to run?

The Zeekr 009 is supported by a five-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and an eight-month, 160,000km battery warranty (except when the car was commercially used). Similarly, in that case the vehicle warranty is reduced to three years or 120,000km.

A tyre puncture on the way to work was firsthand, and Zeekr also provides five-year, unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance.

Then a tow truck arrived and took about 45 minutes to get my poor people mover back to the nearest service centre in South Yarra, Melbourne, where Zeekr got another tyre and called me on the following day to pick up the car.

As far as people movers go, the dual-motor Zeekr 009 AWD is a unique and very attractive proposition.

But it’s just a blisteringly fast, comfortable, luxurious and more expensive than the high asking price suggests, with an equipment that is usually associated only with luxury brands such as Mercedes-Maybach and Rolls-Royce.

In this sense, the 009 has more to offer than similarly positioned alternatives like the Mercedes-Benz V-Class/EQV and Lexus LM. It also presents a compelling alternative to traditional forms of upmarket family transport such as the Audi Q7, BMW X7, and Mercedes-Benz GLS, none of which treat passengers to the same level of space or luxury.

Still, the 009 clearly isn’t for everyone. People movers (bar the Kia Carnival) remain relatively unpopular among private buyers, especially compared to similarly sized SUVs, and questions remain over Zeekr’s ability to provide a premium ownership experience in Australia.

The 009 will probably be a rare sight Down Under for those reasons, as is the case with . But when you’re in the market for something that’s both large and truly special, at least give yourself a test drive. I think just trust me, you won’t be disappointed if you hear the .
