Teslas Apple CarPlay integration delayed by iPhone software – report
Tesla has asked Apple to fix a software bug which has halted progress of the deployment of Apple CarPlay in its vehicles – but not enough iPhone users are running the newest iOS which remedies the problem.
According to Bloomberg, Tesla discovered the maps it uses for its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software – with FSD (Supervised) switched on in Australia and New Zealand last year – weren’t compatible with Apple Maps.
That issue means both companies’ mapping systems may be running simultaneously, potentially leading to the driver following a different set of directions to his car while using Autopilot or FSD.

In response to Tesla’s demand, Apple resolved the problem in the latest version of its smartphone software, iOS 26, but according to Bloomberg that “the slow uptake of the new software has prevented Tesla from full roll-out of CarPlay.”
According to the report, which was originally slated for late 2025, Tesla pulled back because of concerns that there were few customers using the compatible software.
A good update for owners Since Tesla’s late-2025 pause, take-up has been up since last week’s new numbers from Apple last weeks show that 74 per cent of iPhones sold over the past four years have moved on to iOS 26.

The announcement comes after Tesla hasn’t confirmed when Apple CarPlay will be available in its cars, with initial reports last November that the EV maker would add functionality without specifying a timeframe.
There’s been no word on the introduction of rival smartphone mirroring system Android Auto.
Tesla would be among the few automakers that are offering Apple CarPlay, which has been one of a handful of brands – including fellow US electric vehicle maker Rivian (not sold in Australia) – to not support Apple carPlay or Android Auto compatibility in its infotainment systems.
