2026 MG 4 EV Urban review: Quick drive

Chinese EV price wars are still in the air at the bottom of Australia’s new-vehicle market, with one among its own group (OGs) ‘–MG – getting into action again’.

The 2026 MG 4 EV Urban arrives as the second ‘MG 4’ model in Australia, with a starting price of just over $30,000 drive-away. And that’s for a battery-electric hatchback roughly the size of a Volkswagen Golf.
Its sharp price point puts it up against the likes of the BYD Atto 1 and Dolphin, as well as the GWM Ora and new GAC Aion UT electric hatchbacks. You could even throw in MG’s own MG 4 Electric (confused yet?) for good measure, too.
MG says it will sell the new front-wheel drive ML 4 EV Urban with the current rear-drive MH 4 Electric, which is expected to be updated in the coming months and a range restructure that could better structure the two model lines under one mg 4 banner.
But even though this is the entry-level car, it’s far from entry level equipment. It’s almost specced for base-model money if anything.

We’ve found a lot of cheap new cars, so it doesn’t always mean ‘cheerful’. So we were at the Australian media launch of the new MG 4 EV Urban to see whether it is worth considering for those looking for an ev on slack budget.
How does it fare? Read on to find out.
How much does the MG 4 EV Urban cost?
A single trim level will be available for the MG 4 EV Urban in two battery variants, with range from $31,990 drive-away.

But that’s what is right in the firing line of the BYD Dolphin (from $29,990 plus on-road costs), BNYD Atto 1 Premium ($27,999 plus ORCs), GAC Aion UT ($3,990+ ORAs) or GWM Ora (£3,99 drive-away).
Currently in runout, the current rear-driven MG 4 Electric was last sold new from $37,990 plus on-roads. The MG Australia says it’s planning to announce more details of an updated model’moon’.

What is the MG 4 EV Urban like on the inside?
In terms of cabin design, the MG 4 EV Urban is inspired by several new models from a range of ‘MG’s new model (the larger mg S5 eve).

But unlike most of the late-day MG model, there’s no physical, tactile controls for key functions such as climate control and audio volume on the dashboard that add to the large centre touchscreen sitting proudly over the dash like an iPad.
The 12 . The cabin is centered on an 8-inch touchscreen, and even in this entry-level car it has full functionality such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected services, satellite navigation and DAB+ digital radio.
Sadly, it’s not an example of responsiveness or clarity but does good resolution and decent response times for .
The 7. 0-inch digital instrument cluster covers the basics, and is nice departure from other EVs that are eliminating instrument binnacles of any kind.

There is a good quality of Perceived The overall style and execution are much more upmarket than the price tag suggests, with soft-touch surfaces and harder plastics throughout the cabin; an assortment of soft touch materials and hard plastic.
It’s mainly about that frequent touch points and high-traffic surfaces don’t feel cheap to touch, there’re nice familiarity from other members of the MG stable.
It’s a good comfort up front, with leatherette upholstery being soft and smooth to the touch (although leaving vehicles out in the sun on hottest Sydney autumn day led to boozed bum or two on launch day) burnt bumm or 2 on Launch Day. During cooler days, you’ll be glad to hear this little EV hatch is standard with a heated steering wheel and heated front seats – access via shortcuts on the touchscreen.
These seats are okay but not super well bolstered, and generally adjusted to the driver’s left-wing adjustment is very little desired; no seat base angle adjustment or reach adjustment of the steering wheel really grates for the long legged (like myself), so I am sure.

Storage is pretty good, with the deep cubby ahead of large toothed cupholders (which sit in front to a wireless phone charge pad with little grooves to hold your device at hand) and also felt-lined to add some grip.
In the bridge-type centre console, there is a further cubby below to hide things out of sight and charge ports for your mobile devices. The front-centre armrest has another storage area, while small bottles and loose items fit in the door bins (along with smaller bottle & loose objects), too.
You might be surprised at how much space there is in the second row of . The MG 4 E V Urban has 2750mm between the axles and is no light-class hatchback with an average of 12 lakhmm. Indeed, it is a lot more space than many small-class cars such as the VW Golf.
The class is very good for leg and knee room in particular, and you also have rear air vents. Several other facilities, such as rear map pockets and bottle holders on the door doors but no fold-down centre armrest is found in the room where there’s no folding- down centre Armrest. if you’re going to carry kiddies in the back-to-back, you have also received ISOFIX and top-tether points for child seats.

The second row of seats are a further back, with the MG 4 EV Urban saying that there is 382 litres of cargo behind the two rows and it has grown to 1266L folded. Under the boot floor there’s another 98L for charge cables and the like as well, .
But the big underfloor cubby means there’s no spare wheel of any sort – just a tyre repair kit.

How good is the extra 90km of range for a Long Range ’54’ variant, or it will be to you that doesn’t mean much between the two variants; otherwise there’s nothing in your opinion.
We only drove the 54 version at the press launch, and saw an indicated average energy consumption figure of 16.5kWh/100km.

How does the MG 4 EV Urban drive?
The launch drive took us from Centennial Park in inner Sydney to La Perouse, just south of Maroubra.

About 25km was the route, with mainly city and suburban roads at speeds of 40-80km/h – including many school zones along the way.
During the drive program, each segment of the show took about 45 minutes and while there was no freeway or highway driving in it (most time), it’s probably an indication of what kind of driving most MG 4 EV Urbans will be doing.
It is the more powerful 118kW electric motor on the front axle of Essence 54 Long Range grade and the larger (and heavier) 54kWh battery.
But compared to the base car, the 54 spec adds 60kg of extra weight (in the scheme of things is really an extra passenger – and not a big one at that point) in the schemes of stuff.
The MG 4 EV Urban was very mature during the drive program, with smooth, effortless performance, good overall refinement and insulation from outside world as well as a generally fine ride for the city and suburban grind.

This is the form from other newer MG models such as the SUV (HS mid-size) which are very clearly directed at the European and UK markets where there’s an extremely high level of sophistication even from lower priced products. This EV is also competing with the likes of the Skoda Fabia and VW Polo on their home soil.
That’s what makes up and does the personality, e.g., of the Urban (and its drive) and how it drives that “trump”.” This is not bad, as we are fully loaded Essence spec rides on standard 17-inch wheels and the fact that the MG errs on its firmer side of the fence (in terms of chassis tune) gives a whiff of sportiness without losing around-town comfort.
The system of MacPherson strut front suspension is up front, while the rear-end makes do with a more basic torsion beam setup. For fairness, most people would probably not even notice that the difference given to the target demographic was being made and it rarely felt terse at the rear even over some sharper hits in Sydney.
The swell-fitting, well-balanced weighting to the steering but nice accurate and direct response to driver inputs makes it feel like zippy and wieldy through town.
It turns in nicely and is an cinch-to-park, even with standard surround-view cameras – which is pretty rare for a small car at this price point so bravo MG EV Urban.

We didn’t try some of the help and active safety technologies such as adaptive cruise control or lane-centring assist, so we will have to wait more time with the car to get a better gauge on all that – although it is one of China’s best brands for safety tech integration.
A little overactive, I noticed the speed sign warning was a bit of an alert that had been picked up school zones out of hours as well as advisory signs for speed humps and curves. It beeped non-stop even after clearing them but other than that there wasn’t much to complain about it.
A lane-keep assist wasn’t trying to wrestle the steering wheel out of my hands, the blind-spot monitoring works as you would have expected it to and we didn’T get any false alarms from the AEB or forward collision warning systems.

Although the MG 4 EV Urban has only been awarded five stars in Euro NCAP testing – and a rating of 5 to 6 local-based, it is not an ‘ANCAP safety’ rating for the model.

Our first impressions of MG’s new cheap EV are pretty positive.

In Sydney’s south, the MG 4 EV Urban was an easy, sophisticated and comfortable companion on the busy streets of Sydney’s South; it is also capable beyond its ‘urban’ label.
For example, it provides segment-busting space for the price, heaps of kit for that money and a level of urban driving maturity which is nothing short of impressive. Our launch drive was confined to the breadth of conditions, so a test drive with some freeway mixed in is now being properly tested, said Thatt.
In terms of ‘which version should I buy?’, I’m not sure if I see the value in spending $3000 for an extra 90km of claimed range – even if 400km seems to be the magical baseline number for a lot of people. The base car with 316km range is ripper value, and will feel like it’s in another class compared to something like a BYD Atto 1 Premium (about $31,330 drive-away).
Definitely shortlist this one – pending our follow-up drive and confirmation of an ANCAP safety rating.
