2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N review: Quick drive

The new high-performance Hyundai Ioniq 6 N electric sedan matches the potent Ioniq 5 N electric SUV’s wicked power output but comes in a lower-slung package, one that makes it clear this is no ordinary electric vehicle (EV).

The Ioniq 6 N’s remit is not mistaking the IONiQ 6N’, which has been stripped of red around the base of the body kit and the swan-neck rear wing attached to the boot.

In addition to the styling enhancements and the new powertrain, driving range drops to 469km (compared to 624km for the standard model) but still offers ultra-fast DC charging at up to 350kW.

More important, is what’s more under the skin of Hyundai its engineers have adapted it to deliver engaging performance not just in a straight line but through the bends too. But for those who think EVs can’t be fun to drive, it is an antidote to .

How much does the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N cost?

Although the price of Hyundai Australia has not yet announced pricing for the Ioniq 6 N, if any other markets are to follow up it should be very similar to that of the drive-away Ioon 5 N which costs $123,242 (based on a North Sydney postcode) While the car’s equipment level is fine, it’s a good one-off but you will have to pay extra for some of the paint finishes.

What is the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N like on the inside?

Even though the exterior design of the Ioniq 6, less, although it was reworking extensively in its original version, has been changed inside the sedan (though this model already had a good setup), and there are some specific changes for the new Ionic 6 N.

Let’s start with the most important part the steering wheel. This is a full round multifunction tiller, which has just been dial-wise and it’s very big for our liking but feels good in hands. We love the way it’s all proper buttons at work.

If you think about the idea at first, there is a lot going on but when you’re driving almost everything is within thumb’s reach. It gives you a 12 o’clock marker, the left side has ‘hand Drive Mode selector’ and on the right there is slick red NGB (N Grin Boost) button that can be used to generate power for up to ten seconds at once.

Both horizontal spokes are dotted with all the usual cruise control, phone and media buttons; below are two satellite buttons for various N modes.

The digital dashboard – two dozen of which are part of. This is based on the information that you’re using to drive in 3-inch displays – and it depends on what driving mode you are doing.

The native infotainment is fairly intuitive to use, and there’s the usual Android Auto and Apple CarPlay there too.

In keeping with the performance theme, there are sports seats up front, but these stop short of being overly track-focused; there’s enough lateral support and bolstering for more enthusiastic driving, but they aren’t a pain to get in and out of on a daily basis, unlike what you find in an Audi RS3 or BMW M3.

In the rear, people are more traditional seats (albeit with the same nice upholstery) – but still have much more conventional seats. It is a car with an almost-three-metre wheelbase, and it seems like acres of legroom that has led to what appears as acres.

While the lower roofline limits headroom a bit (though not necessarily detrimental to the overall passenger experience) and flat floor means even the middle rear seat occupant doesn’t suffer from too much bad, it isn’T just an extreme example of how well-defined inflicted on top.

The practicality is slightly limited, and the total capacity is 371 litres (partly because of the additional structural bracing that can be seen in the rear) by a separate boot lid rather than if it was lifted backwards.

What’s under the bonnet?

Ioniq 6 N will be sold in Australia with only one specification for when it goes on sale – there is just one. Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – The powertrain mirrors what is already in the car.

Dual-motor configuration includes a 175kW motor on the front axle and 303kW (more powerful) motor in the rear. It produces a peak power output of 448kW (in standard form) but the N Grin Boost function increases that to 469kW for 10-second bursts.

How does the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N drive?

I don’t know how Hyundai approaches the N variants of its electric cars, so if you haven’T heard about it, then think that we should consider an Ioniq 6 N as a two-part car.

Our drive was started at the city and in this environment, in its default driving mode, Hyundai is really no different from many other electric cars.

makes it through the streets easily and its suspension is good at soaking everything up. A normal drive setting, where the power delivered is smooth and quiet. But even 20-inch wheels don’t make a lot of road noise, which is no doubt partly due to the ‘acoustically optimised glass in front of the cabin.

The only way to know how good a performance is on tap, you need to prod the right pedal; for the everyday stuff (like joining’slip road-way’) it feels like you’re barely tickling the Hyundai as the digital speedo speeds up the numbers. This surge of torque keeps your back firmly in the sports seats as it pushes out to keep your head high.

But even in the same Normal drive mode, get a few more interesting roads and that’s just enough body roll to feel what it’s doing and steering that telegraphs accuracy but remind you are still driving some weight.

A change in sportier settings to re-train the suspension noticeably lifts up and the sound booms into cabin, giving another character as an additional character is revealed by a switch to the more from it. Certainly purists of purism will roll their collective eyes at what Hyundai’s engineers have done here by producing an engine-like sound and even adding pops and crackles on the ‘overrun’.

As in the Ioniq 5 N, it’s fun but that is what. That makes you smile, and that’s before you even start getting into it with the simulated gearshifts.

Whatever software, and coding Hyundai’s work is impressively well done right down to the feeling of being kicked from behind as you pull the next ‘gear’ shift. This apparently unending torque that EVs provide means you’re pulling on that right paddle faster than you might think. And even if you don’t, it can become an effective rev-limiter and adds more laughter to the whole experience.

A complete N gizmos and smuggle is the most appropriate way to keep track (or anywhere else other than a public road), especially drift mode, where it’s best to use the full breadth of the N Gizzmos or ggimmicks. The settings allow you set the car up to act like a support coach and safety net for when you really want to hang the tail out. As the rear axle melts away your bespoke Pirelli P Zero rubber, you’ll choose how high it is to start and drift angle or even spin on wheels so that you look like a hero.

A firmer suspension keeps everything well in check, the front-end turns nicely and keeping things tidier is kept on. It can be easy to forget that this is an EV between the sound of gear shifts and other s. No matter where it comes from, that swell of torque from both axles is impressive.

When you bleed off as the apex approaches, there is an attractive consistency from that pedal under heavier braking and when power is returned to your mouth, only ‘light weight transfer backwards’. It’s quite a fast thing for if I tip the scales of. car at over 2000kg, it feels very quick to say that? It doesn’t mean everyone is going to take one of these to a track day, but it shows just how fun and how good can it be on the right ribbon of road.

For example, if there is one thing the Hyundai doesn’t track, it’s energy efficient we saw more than 62kWh/100km in one session (compared to an average of less than 20kWh or 100km during our road driving)

So far, there is no shortage of EVs around the world that have enough power and acceleration to rearrange your organs from a standing start; but so many are one-trick ponies.

In addition to this it is a good Ioniq 6 N that offers an efficient and capable electric driving experience in the everyday commuting sense, but has enough tricks up its sleep to make your favourite stretch laugh-out fun drive on their favorite stretch.

You don’t have to be cynical of such things as this, but scratch the surface and you’ll find this is a really good thing – and seriously fun. ‘EVs that were built by car people for car owners are EV-based vehicles so it’s very hard to get right.
