MG 4 EV Urban could go cheaper for fleets

The Chinese brand has offered the cheapest electric vehicle (EV) it is 2026 MG 4 EV Urban, which was launched in its first year of launch but could be even cheaper if product planners choose to import less well-equipped variants.

Priced from just $31,990 drive-away, the MG 4 EV Urban is amongst the most affordable EVs on sale in Australia… period. However, the Essence specification offered with two battery sizes in Australia is actually the flagship option, with a lower-grade trim available in other markets like the UK.

The small electric hatchback’s base price could be less than $30,000 on the road if it was to be available here, this may mean.

Meng Chen, chief executive of product for MG Motor Australia, speaking to the media at the Australian media drive behind the launch of the brand’s customers said “The Essence is the only one that we have available at launch but it could be cheaper and would make its way down Under under much more trim.”

We do have the [cheaper] trim line, but we deliberately debuted the Essence trimline because the data is indicating that EV buyers prefer premium trims. But we’ve got very good data to support that,’ Mr Chen said.

Our [EV] customers are buying the premium trims, 90 per cent of our customer’s “EV” is a . Is it true that the 10 per cent – who are they? They’re fleet customers, government customers and focus on an EV program but don’t want the premium trim (they don’t need [features like] panoramic roof for a government car, so this is wrong [for] perceptions]. He said ‘Although s are in the line, “

In the launch of its MG 4 EV Urban, representatives from the brand made several references to the UK market as an important indicator for what will be in Australia.

The spec of Australia’s ‘Essence’ is pretty well-matched to the UK’s ‘Premium’ trim level, which only comes with the 54kWh.Long Range’ battery pack – from £27,995 (A$53,549) mind you are on board for this price.

meanwhile, the lower ‘Comfort’ trim is available with both 43kWh and 54kWh batteries. The equivalent Premium spec is £2500 (A$4782) cheaper than its counterpart and does not have niceties such as heated front seats, ambient lighting and surround-view cameras but subbing in cloth upholstery and smaller alloy wheels to achieve the sharper price point.

Hence, standard specification is still solid for an entry-level small car with highlights such as LED headlights; full suite of MG Pilot active safety aids); 12. The infotainment system, which includes satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; 8-inch touchscreen info tamper with connected services (e.g.

Mr Chen insisted that the decision not to launch the fleet-spec MG 4 EV Urban is a ‘business move’ but it could also have to do with the fact that new ev has yet to receive an ANCAP safety rating. In Australia, a five-star ANCAP rating is required for many fleets to be in demand of.

The MG 4 ‘EV Urban’ scored a full five stars in Euro NCAP testing, which is likely to be passed over to Australian models soon after the launch of its newer version. But maybe that is when we’ll hear a follow-up from the Chinese brand announcement that its cheapest EV will be even cheaper.

Two battery variants in Australia offer the electric hatch at one trim level with range from just $31,990 drive-away.

That’s right in the firing line of the BYD Atto 1 Premium ($27,990), BYD Dolphin (from $29,990), GAC Aion UT (from $31,990) – all before on-road costs – and the GWM Ora (from $33,990 drive-away).

The current rear-wheel drive MG 4 Electric is in runout but was last sold new from $37,990 plus on-roads. MG Australia said it will be releasing more details of an updated model’soon’.
