Do you like the Tiguan but need seven seats? The Volkswagen Tayron has you covered.

This is the Tayron, a successor to the long-standing but unforgotten Tiguan Allspace that’s effectively reviving an older version of the new-generation Ti Guan and has shortened wheelbase for allowing twilight row of seats. It has a new name for it, and now means that they’re different models on the showroom floor.

The Elegance is the penultimate grade in the non-hybrid Tayron range, priced at $60,390 before on-road costs.

Toyota Kluger, $62,410 before on-roads and exclusively with hybrid power – is one of the direct competitors for the seven-seat Tayron’s rivals.

There’s also the Hyundai Santa Fe, which costs $54,000 to $77,150 before on-roads, and the Kia Sorento, pricier at the top of its range. A higher price is also a cost for the Mazda CX-80, as it has been described in models already mentioned, but like with Tayron this model is outselling its rival.

For Volkswagen-specific context, the equivalent Tiguan 150TSI Elegance costs $61,590 before on-roads.

What is the Volkswagen Tayron like on the inside?

The Tayron’s interior is visually simple but functionally somewhat complex, as it relies on screens rather than physical buttons like the normal Tiguan.

Your only other physical controls are the buttons on steering wheel and the controls on centre console. That means you’ll have to dive into the touchscreen to make even the least of adjustments, although Volkswagen has tried to simplify this process by offering an array of customisable shortcuts.

Unlike an array of dedicated physical buttons that is always in the same place as it’s supposed to be, what menus and functions are easy for access should I control. The only one touch is the ability to access a menu such as car settings, which’s particularly helpful for .

Similarly, the piano-black haptic sliders below the screen are still horrified by that phraser’s words. Why is it so simple as audio volume and air-conditioning temperature to be this fiddly when there are easy, effective buttons for years; glossy black plastic means any greasy fingerprints will be on display for all to see.

It is buried inside the screen itself, although all other climate controls are visible through an ever-on ribbon at bottom of the display. That’s an unnecessary cling and even simple changes require you to divert your attention for more time than you should.

At least there’s a substitute for audio volume the multi-function dial on the centre console is also used as an alternative to sound. This allows you to switch between audio volume and the drive modes, and is a very good thing even if it feels like an off-brand version of Skoda’s lovely Smart Dials.

But if that’s not good enough, you’ll see the real steering wheel buttons clearly labeled and nice to press. We appreciate that Volkswagen is committed to reintroducing physical buttons here, and the Tayron is much easier to live with as a result.

Cruise control The ones on the left are cruise control, and those right navigate the instrument cluster. The latter unlocks a number of layouts and themes, and there should be plenty on offer to meet the needs and tastes of most motorists.

That was one of the most ambiguous moments here,’ s said. When we were driving along we got a tyre pressure warning but couldn’t for the life of us know which syr was actually low. sifted through all of what we could find in the vehicle status menu–all that was available to us – but nothing gave an accurate explanation for how much warning is.

That’s either a limitation in the monitoring system or how the screens of the car are set up, even if we missed something that you think is your problem when travelling at speed. Oh and none of the tyres were flat, even though it was an original phraser.

But beyond that, it is a nice place to hang out in the Tayron’s cabin and spend time. There’s no denying the pared-back look clean, and the unique wood inserts and artistic ambient lighting elements of the Elegance really add to its feel.

We regret that there’s still a fair bit of piano-black plastic on high touch parts, such as sliders in the infotainment system and centre console. It is a nice and shiny look like as is the case in photos, but it’s very easily spotted with smudges and scratches.

It’s only a misstep of that kind in Volkswagen’s materials selections for the Tayron cabin, which is what really makes it so. Everything else is super-plush There’s a lot of soft-touch synthetic leather on the dashboard, armrests and seats; an accent with its premium look and feel are the steering wheel.

The cabin is a fairly configurable configuration, and you’ll also see the cabin as well. A lot of power in the plush, massaging seats (thigh and lumbar support) while we could do more reach adjustment for the steering wheel but there’s a good range of powered movement.

There’s also a good way to store up, too, like . There is an elevator-like cubby, with movable dividers and cups holders to allow you (if necessary) to hide things under the central armrest; there’s also a strong rubberised flap further forward. There are loose items on top, or charge devices with the dual phone chargers and USB-C ports under the bed.

Moving to the second row brings another large and comfortable room for s. While it may not be visually interesting beyond the white accents in the upholstery, this isn’t necessarily The bench is well-sculpted and comfortable; passengers of all shapes and sizes should fit perfectly.

The middle seat is even if it’s workable to be, but there’s still a big driveline hump on the floor. Then passengers can use a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders, as well as ‘an easy climate system on the back of this center console’ (two USB-C ports and even seat heating) or two SIM-CAT ports.

The third row is further back; the whole reason you’d buy a Tayron over tiguan. Though it’s not an adverbial word that comes to mind when you’ve shuffled the second-row seats around and taken your seat, Spacious is actually pretty useful.

But the Tayron isn’t meant to be a people mover, so it’s just big enough for the third-row seat area to work and means you can carry – with relative ease if you’re going to drive. The seats are slimmer and flat-tailed when they’re folded down, of course, because the seats don’t have meaningful bolstering but that makes them slimer.

Then you can do so with handy levers on either side of the boot, which gives 850 litres of space. But that’s hardly an endorsement of the 885 litres offered by the only five-seat Tayron variant, and both boots are much larger than the 700 liters provided by defunct Tiguan Allspace.

Nevertheless, all Tayrons provide an electric tailgate with kick sensor; there’s also a space-saver spare wheel under the floor as standard – and provisions to store the retractable cargo cover.

What’s under the bonnet?

A 2. is to power the Tayron 150TSI, which has been said as a ‘tayloron 15’spirator and an anti-Tairohudor of Tyanan in its own right? It was a four-cylinder petrol engine with 150kW of power and 320Nm of torque, which generated an electric motor that produced about 200kW (800 km) of force from 0-litre turbocharged four engines. All four wheels are paired with drive via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends drive to all four wheel.

Our week with the Tayron was full of highway commuting — from an extended round-trip to the Lang Long proving ground. It gave the skew towards low-intensity driving an even better readout for fuel economy than that of what is said to be “the best” in terms of how well it was written.

How does the Volkswagen Tayron drive?

For all intents and purposes, the Tayron drives like a larger Tiguan. That’s both good and slightly less good.

So, if similarities are expected to be true, both cars are practically the same beyond the Tayron’s stretched wheelbase. That means that both have the same dorky column-mounted, twistable gear selector (which will only be found by freshmen once they inevitably and incorrectly look to the multifunction dial in the middle of the midfield)?

However, the two models have far more important differences in their respective ways than just trying to reimagine age-old automotive conventions. The Tayron doesn’t feel more unwieldy than the Tiguan in bends, even though it is longer than its original length, One is a balanced chassis.

This gives a sensible character on the road, and makes it so easy to read the car from behind the wheel. While it’s not really a fun thing to do, everything just seems to work right for .

Among the most important parts of this is that powerplant for the car’s engine. the two in 150TSI guise. A 0-litre turbo-four is good performance without setting the world on fire, even though you have to work it hard than many other cars to make the turbo do its best work.

The rev range of it is fairly refined; its voice is kept down enough to avoid overpowering conversations, and transmits no significant noises through the cabin. It is arguably the sweet spot in Tayron’s three-engine non-hybrid lineup, at least as far from the compromise between efficiency and performance.

It is also a solid transmission, as does the automatic transmission which is hard to believe. While it still has some of the most common dual-clutch behaviour, stumbling while crawling at low speed in traffic, its shifts are generally smooth once as fast as to speed.

You can control gear shifters with the steering wheel’s paddle shifter if you like, but in any drive mode that isn’t Sport Sport-free, you will notice some input lag. If you have to hold gears while towing, they’re still working if you need them (though it’s not the case of ), but are still used.

But on that note, it’s super-easy to flick through the different drive modes. The most effective way to make a change is to press the multifunction dial down and then twist to your desired mode while they’re available via the infotainment system.

They say all modes are what they say on the tin; Sport mode is more likely to stiffen up the Tayron’s steering and suspension. Despite the fact that it isn’t Volkswagen’s more sophisticated ‘Progressive Steering’ system which feels even nicer, the former does not feel like its own good by default. It’s just right weighted and communicative enough to be a good .

The adaptive suspension damping, meanwhile, is enabled by Volkswagen’s Dynamic Chassis Control Pro (DCC Pro) system, which is as well calibrated as ever – although perhaps not so impressive as it is in other Volkswagens.

This is the most common thing with the Tayron, it feels a bit crashy (at least more so than we did in the Tiguan) It’ll clatter over some aggressive bumps, generally feeling firmer than we think, regardless of the drive mode.

That’s a good deal, of course; it is decent handling of . A Tayron is able to turn with good composure even in its most comfortable suspension setting, Sport mode (which gives you an extra edge on twisty roads), large roundabouts when it’s time to go around a slower car.

Nevertheless, we could do with a little more compliance in the day-to-day as the Tayron’s ride can wear on you during longer stints behind the wheel. Any of the vehicle’s well-calibrated safety gear can at least help you take some of that load off.

Besides the Tyre pressure monitor we mentioned above, our experience with Tayron’s safety suite was functional and reliable. highlights are adaptive cruise control and lane-centring systems, the former responding appropriately to and matching surrounding traffic; while the latter confidently kept the car on the straight and narrow.

There were no problems with any of the passive systems that suddenly intervened, either by a sudden or unexpectedly occurring . I think it’s just a complete package that gets the job done in ‘no-fuss way, and the little hiccup we have had aren’t exactly deal-breakers.

Despite the fact that you don’t need seven seats, the Tayron is good and may just make sense than the Tiguan.

Most of the Tiguan’s strengths are in Tayron’s favor – an interior and sensible powertrain options – but trades the good ride and general dynamic competence for a longer body that can be used by up to seven people.

I hate the ridiculous service pricing and firm ride, but at least you’re getting a good bang for your buck. Tested here, the Tayron is cheaper than the equivalent Tiguan (but two extra seats inside a larger body) and this evidence of that has been proved.

A. single of the most sensible picks among the bunch is the 150TSI engine, but you’d probably be just as well off dropping down a rung on the variant ladder and going for the Life instead of Elegance. There’s a pain across the range, however, that lack of dashboard buttons is an issue for most important things to work as they should.

Ultimately, the Tayron is an excellent family SUV (although it may be in some ways more compromises than the Tiguan), so for this case there’s no way to argue with the lower price.
