New cars with the lowest power-to-weight ratios in Australia

Everyone’s obsessed with speed, but not every car is here to give you the thrill of a sub-four-second 0-100km/h time.

We’ve just put together a list of the 10 cars on sale right now with the lowest power-to-weight ratios, as many of Australia’s best-selling cars are only modest.

We’ve done this instead of just ranked cars on outright power, as the real world is much more relevant to power versus weight.

Then we have also said 0-100km/h times where the manufacturer provided us with our own words but most cars on this list don’t say that there are no acceleration figures for obvious reasons.

BYD Dolphin Essential

The base BYD Dolphin currently has the lowest power-to-weight ratio of any new model currently available in Australia, clocking in at just 46.5kW per tonne.

BYD Atto 1 Essential

Two electric BYD hatchbacks top the list, with the base Atto 1 offering just 50.2kW per tonne.

Hyundai Inster 2WD

This list includes the base Inster, which is the third and final EV on this list; itips the Atto 1 with a slightly improved 51 per cent. 6kW per tonne.

Next up is the petrol Fiat 500, which produces 55.4kW per tonne.

Despite being the top-ranked fourth place on this list, it actually has the lowest total power output of all at just 51kW. Toyota LandCruiser Prado Kakadu

In flagship Kakadu trim, the ever-popular Toyota Prado produces 59.5kW per tonne from its 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine.

The diesel is one of four powertrains available for the GWM Tank 300, and so-equipped vehicles produce 60.7kW per tonne.

Kia Picanto auto

The Kia Picanto is Australia’s best-selling city hatchback, and with an automatic gearbox, it develops 63.5kW per tonne.
