2026 Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid review

Chery’s smallest SUV also offers Australia’s cheapest full hybrid powertrain.

The Chery Tiggo 4 isn’t just landing in Australia, it’s making waves. Forget tiptoeing onto the scene – this small SUV has cannonballed into the top three, shaking up the sales charts in its debut year and leaving rivals scrambling.

Riding the wave of its turbocharged petrol Tiggo 4’s triumph, Chery supercharged its lineup with hybrid (HEV) editions. This electrifying move answers the surging call for hybrid vehicles.

Aussie drivers are going green, one car at a time. Hybrid vehicles are making a splash in the Australian auto market, carving out a significant slice of new car sales. Forget futuristic fantasies – plugless hybrids are already a reality on our roads. A whopping 161,426 hybrids have rolled off dealership lots this year alone (up to October 31st), proving that fuel efficiency and environmental consciousness are no longer niche concerns. That’s more than 1 in 10 of the 1,014,027 new vehicles sold nationwide! The hybrid revolution is here, and it’s electrifying the Australian driving experience.

Hybrid hype? Hold your horses. Chery’s Tiggo 4 hybrid packs a punch, but at a staggering $7-8K premium over the petrol version. Unless you’re practically living at the pump, those fuel savings might take an eternity to recoup.

Is it worth the jump? Let’s find out.

How much does the Chery Tiggo 4 cost?

What is the Chery Tiggo 4 like on the inside?

Stepping inside the Tiggo 4 is like entering a familiar, comfortable space. Initial impressions defy its ‘budget’ classification.

Forget the drab interiors usually found at this price. Chery throws a curveball. Gleaming screens and stitched leatherette whisper luxury, a stark contrast to the hard, unforgiving plastics and depressing design often encountered in budget-friendly vehicles. It’s an unexpected delight for the senses.

At the Tiggo 4’s rock-bottom price, some rough edges are forgivable. Unlike its pricier siblings, the Tiggo 7 and 8, where tactile disappointments sting, the 4’s affordability makes those less-than-premium details easier to swallow.

The cabin places you in a position of authority. From your elevated perch, the road unfolds beneath you with exceptional clarity. Sink into the sculpted, faux-leather bucket seats – complete with integrated head restraints in the Ultimate trim. For the driver of the top-spec model, finding the perfect position is effortless thanks to the six-way power adjustments.

For shorter drivers, the cockpit might be a sweet spot, thanks to the accommodating tilt and telescopic wheel. But at 6’1", I felt like my thighs were staging a protest against the front seat’s lack of support. And, in true Chinese car fashion, adjusting the cushion angle to alleviate the discomfort? Forget about it. Annoyingly, it’s a no-go.

Dual 10.25-inch displays sit within one housing, one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment touchscreen.

While the visuals are crisp and clean, the sluggish response and refresh rate create a jarring disconnect. It functions, sure, but that underlying lag betrays the otherwise luxurious sheen, leaving the user experience feeling strangely…compromised.

The digital displays weren’t always in sync with the real world. Imagine flooring it, only to see the power meter lagging a beat behind the surge. And my iPhone 17 Pro Max? Let’s just say its wireless CarPlay connection to the infotainment system experienced a few… shall we say, "unscripted" moments.

The dashboard’s digital display seems to have raided the parts bins of yesteryear’s Mercedes. Its tiled touchscreen interface feels like a techie lovechild, born from an unholy union of an Apple/Android smartphone and BMW’s iDrive app abyss.

However, stepping inside reveals a potential snag: the center console. Drowning in fingerprint-magnet piano black trim, it’s punctuated by climate control readouts reminiscent of a bygone clock radio era. These retro digits clash jarringly with the otherwise contemporary design of the Tiggo 4.

The oversized digital displays, while legible, feel clunky. A streamlined, integrated control pod would have been a more elegant solution. Thankfully, the tactile temperature toggles offer a welcome, grounded contrast.

The Tiggo 4’s shift-by-wire gear selector is a visual tease. Its stubby design initially whispers "premium," but the glossy finish quickly screams "fingerprint convention." Worse, shifting gears requires an almost comically deep dive with the brake pedal. I found myself accidentally landing in Neutral more times than I care to admit, especially during tight maneuvers. Three-point turns became miniature adventures in unintended gear selections.

Forget clutter! This interior is a masterclass in stashing your stuff. Beyond the usual suspects, clever storage solutions abound. A shelf tucked under the center console? Check. Door bins that actually hold something? Absolutely. And a hidden cubby beneath the front armrest guards your valuables. Even the cupholders are winners. The only slight miss? The phone slot. It’s handy, but lacks the depth to truly conceal your device. Wireless charging? Sadly, not included.

Need a family-friendly SUV that prioritizes passenger comfort? The Tiggo 4’s cleverly designed, upright shape maximizes rear space, setting a new standard for roomy backseats in its class.

Sliding into my ideal driving position was effortless. Even for taller passengers, the outboard seats offer generous head, knee, and legroom, while the middle seat is passable for shorter trips.

Even back-seat passengers are treated to a touch of luxury with a dedicated rear air vent. A fold-down center armrest with integrated cupholders transforms the rear bench into a comfortable haven. Thoughtfully placed bottle holders in the door bins and convenient rear map pockets add to the practicality. Of course, child safety is paramount, with easily accessible ISOFIX and top-tether anchors ready for your precious cargo.

The Tiggo 4 doesn’t skimp on boot space, offering a generous 470 litres (measured to the roof) with all seats occupied. The Hybrid Ultimate gets a practical space-saver spare, while the Urban, curiously, settles for a tyre repair kit.

What’s under the bonnet?

The Tiggo 4 Hybrid pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor and small battery pack.

| Specifications | Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid | | — | — | |Engine| 1.5L 4cyl petrol | |Engine outputs| 71kW / 120Nm | |Electric motor outputs| 150kW / 310Nm | |Battery| 1.8kWh li-ion | |Transmission| 1-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission | |Drive type| Front-wheel drive | |Weight| 1494kg – tare | |0-100km/h (claimed)| – | |Fuel economy (claimed) | 5.4L/100km | |Fuel tank capacity| 51L | |Fuel requirement| 91-octane regular unleaded | |CO2 emissions| 123g/km | |Emissions standard| – |

Forget sipping fuel like a hybrid Yaris. The Tiggo 4 Hybrid, despite its name, drinks with a slightly heavier foot. Our test drive revealed a fuel consumption figure that lingered in the high 5s and low 6s – a far cry from Yaris-like efficiency.

The Tiggo 4 Hybrid faced its ultimate test: a week of Melbourne peak-hour traffic. My daily grind to the childcareman.xyz office, a 22km gauntlet, was its proving ground. Over 17 kilometers were spent battling the freeway’s relentless flow.

While a definite step up from its thirsty petrol counterparts gulping down 8-9L/100km, this hybrid falls short of true efficiency for a small SUV. Forget Chery’s ambitious 1000km claim – real-world driving reveals a range that leaves you wanting more.

How does the Chery Tiggo 4 drive?

Back-to-back weeks with the Tiggo 4, one guzzling petrol, the other sipping electrons, revealed a clear winner. Forget the sticker shock; the hybrid’s $8,000 upcharge over the Ultimate trim is an investment, not an expense. It justmakes sense.

Chery’s "Dedicated Hybrid Transmission" remains shrouded in mystery, but my initial impression leans towards an e-CVT variant. However, unlike the reigning hybrid champ, Toyota, Chery’s system appears to lean heavily on its electric motor, even if the overall hybrid efficiency doesn’t quite match up.

Forget the petrol engine’s roar; the electric motor reigns supreme. Boasting a potent 150kW and 310Nm of torque, it’s the undisputed champion, effortlessly propelling you forward. The petrol engine? A mere supporting player, discreetly chiming in to keep the battery brimming, a silent partner in this electrifying performance.

Forget clumsy starts and turbo tantrums! The electric surge delivers silky-smooth launches the gas-only model can only dream of. Where that one stumbles with lag and a touchy throttle, leaving you lurching instead of launching, this one simplygoes.

Despite packing a battery, the Tiggo 4 EV barely tips the scales, adding a mere 90kg to its petrol-powered sibling. The electric motor injects a surprising dose of zest, transforming the driving experience with eager responsiveness and a newfound level of smoothness.

The chassis whispers sweet nothings of balanced poise, a dance between comfort and control. Yet, the steering remains stubbornly mute. Where the road should sing through your fingertips, there’s only a numb silence, a frustrating disconnect from the driving experience.

The front-end can feel like wading through treacle at times. Throw in some body roll that’s as predictable as it is pronounced, thanks to that tall, lean frame, and you might think fun’s off the menu. Wrestle it, though, drive it like youmeanit, and suddenly it’s surprisingly rewarding.

Command city streets with confidence. The Tiggo 4’s elevated driving position and commanding view transform your daily drive, delivering the secure feeling of a larger SUV without sacrificing urban agility. Navigate tight corners and conquer traffic with ease in this surprisingly nimble ride.

The petrol engine whispers to life, its voice a mere suggestion until a faint tremor, a tactile confirmation of its awakening, pulses through the chassis. Otherwise, silence reigns supreme in the cabin, a testament to exceptional noise insulation.

Chery’s driver assistance suite? A rollercoaster. The adaptive cruise control is smooth sailing, and the Ultimate’s surround-view camera? A parking superhero. But the highway assist? Let’s just say it’s more like a caffeinated squirrel at the wheel than a helpful co-pilot.

Chery, Omoda, and Jaecoo’s Integrated Cruise Assist – I’ve tangoed with this system before, and sadly, the lane centering still needs a serious choreographer. Instead of a gentle nudge, it yanks the steering wheel like a hyperactive toddler, then clings possessively to the lane’s left edge. Relaxing cruise? More like a white-knuckle wrestling match for lane dominance.

Lane assist defeated, the drive improves immeasurably. However, prepare for a symphony of electronic chirps and chimes. The car becomes a digital orchestra, instruments blaring warnings with cryptic intent. Truthfully, I often felt lost in translation, bombarded by auditory alerts without a clue what triggered them, or worse, whythere wasn’t a corresponding visual cue.

Forget Big Brother; your car’s the new warden. The driver attention monitor glares, a digital hawk scrutinizing every twitch. Look away for a nanosecond at the siren song of the infotainment system? Prepare for the digital wag of the finger: a cryptic "distracted" warning. It’s less safety, more vehicular guilt trip.

childcareman.xyz’s Take on the Chery Tiggo 4

Forget the rest: the Tiggo 4’s hybrid is sweet, but the base model? That’s where smart money lives.

Paying an extra $5,000 for the Ultimate trim unlocks some enticing features, but does it truly deliver $8,000 worth more value than the gas-powered Tiggo 4 Ultimate? At $30,000, the price tag throws a shadow on the "value king" image it aims for.

Forget gas-guzzling guilt trips! This hybrid powertrain isn’t just a green halo; it’s a punchy upgrade. You’ll feel the difference immediately – smoother acceleration, effortless cruising, and a lighter footprint on your wallet. Okay, it won’t sip fuel like a Yaris Cross Hybrid, but compared to its petrol-only twin, prepare for a pleasant surprise, especially when navigating the urban jungle. Think fewer trips to the pump and more peace of mind.

Chery’s most diminutive SUV punches far above its weight, showcasing the brand’s mastery of value. Forget compromises – it delivers a knockout blow of standard features and interior finesse that redefines "bang for your buck." Frankly, it makes the entry-level Haval Jolion look like it’s phoning it in.

Pocket-friendly, head-turning, and surprisingly plush, this ride won’t bleed your bank account dry. Plus, Chery’s rock-solid, seven-year warranty and fixed-price servicing let you embrace the unconventional with confidence. Take a chance on the underdog; you might just be surprised.
