2026 Mazda CX-60 review

Two years ago, Mazda threw down the gauntlet with the CX-60: a bold, all-electrified SUV aimed squarely at the premium mid-size market.

The CX-60 arrived not as a mere successor, but a statement. Forged on a brand-new rear/all-wheel drive architecture, it debuted Mazda’s electrified future: silky smooth mild-hybrid inline-six petrol and diesel options and their inaugural plug-in hybrid. This wasn’t just a step up from the CX-5; Mazda boldly aimed higher, benchmarking themselves against the luxury giants of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Across the ocean in Japan, the CX-60 debuted in a spectrum of flavors, ranging from opulent, high-end models to more accessible, mainstream editions boasting simpler powertrains and features. Australia recently sampled a taste of this diversity via running changes earlier this year, which also revamped the suspension and transmission. However, the engine lineup remained stubbornly unchanged.

Remember when I said the Mazda CX-60 could sneak under $50k back in ’22? Well, buckle up, because the 2026 model just proved me right with a brand new, budget-friendly engine option finally making that prediction a reality.

As the curtain closes on the beloved CX-5, Mazda Australia throws a curveball: the familiar ‘G25’ petrol engine, now powering the sleek CX-60. Forget what you know this CX-60 marks the debut of rear-wheel drive. Think of it as the CX-60 plug-in hybrid, stripped down to its purely petrol soul.

Is Mazda’s aggressively priced new CX-60 a disruptor? Could it tempt you away from the usual suspects in the medium SUV segment? Think Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail, or even its own, more established sibling, the CX-5.

We got a first drive of the 2026 Mazda CX-60 G25 in Melbourne to find out.

How much does the Mazda CX-60 cost?

The Mazda CX-60 just got a whole lot more tempting. Forget what you thought you knew about entry-level luxury SUVs; the G25 variant slices a hefty $6,000 off the price of its mild-hybrid sibling. Now, you can slip behind the wheel of this head-turning SUV for a surprisingly accessible $44,240 (plus on-road costs), or drive away today for just $47,990.

| Model | Price before on-road costs | | — | — | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G25 Pure | $44,240 (NEW) | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G40e Pure | $50,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 D50e Pure | $52,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G25 Evolve | $49,240 (NEW) | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G40e Evolve | $55,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 D50e Evolve | $57,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G25 Touring | $52,240 (NEW) | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G40e Touring | $58,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 D50e Touring | $60,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 P50e Pure | $63,290 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G40e GT | $64,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 D50e GT | $66,240 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 P50e Evolve | $68,290 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 G40e Azami | $68,440 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 D50e Azami | $70,440 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 P50e GT | $77,290 | | 2025 Mazda CX-60 P50e Azami | $81,490 |

Remember when the CX-60 first landed on Australian shores in 2023? The starting price for the G40e Evolve was a hefty $59,800, plus on-road costs. Fast forward to today, and the price of admission has been slashed by a staggering $15,000!

What is the Mazda CX-60 like on the inside?

Nothing has really changed here, so I won’t bore you with an in-depth breakdown of the cabin.

Think of the Pure, Evolve, and Touring grades as familiar faces. They’re the reliable foundation across the G40e and D50e M Hybrid models, and even the P50e PHEV range. Nothing groundbreaking to report here, just dependable consistency.

Stepping into the CX-60 reveals a world where subtle nuances define the experience. While the core cabin architecture remains consistent, the true personality lies in the details: the meticulously chosen trimmings and the captivating displays. Even the entry-level G25 boasts Mazda’s impressive 10.25-inch Connect infotainment system, ensuring a connected and engaging journey from the start.

Step up to the Evolve, and say goodbye to squinting! Mazda ditches the entry-level’s 7.0-inch display for a vibrant, expansive 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. It’s a leap in clarity and sophistication – a screen that puts the CX-30 and CX-5’s simpler setups to shame.

"Stepping into the Pure grade is a stark reminder of compromise. Where aspirations meet affordability, hard plastics betray the budget-conscious nature of the model, cladding the upper door trims and dashboard with a constant, tactile echo of ‘base model’."

The Pure trim keeps it classic with durable cloth seats. Step up to the Evolve for "Maztex," a convincing leather alternative. Craving the real deal? The Touring boasts genuine leather, though you might be hard-pressed to tell it apart from its high-quality faux counterpart.

Entry-level models offer hands-on seat adjustments, but upgrade to the Touring trim and sink into a power-adjustable driver’s seat with personalized memory. Cold mornings? Heated front seats are also included.

The cabin offers pleasing consistency, lavishing leather on the steering wheel and shift selector – tactile treats that elevate the experience. Forget fumbling with touchscreens; chunky, responsive climate controls and multifunction steering wheel buttons provide satisfyingly direct command.

Slide into the CX-60, and Mazda familiarity cocoons you. But, stepping up to the Evolve trim transforms the experience. Suddenly, the CX-5 feels…ordinary. Crisp lines and a commanding silhouette create the illusion of a genuinely larger, more imposing presence. You don’t just drive the CX-60; you occupy a substantial space.

The CX-60’s second row hits a sweet spot. While not palatial despite its extended length, it offers a tangible upgrade over the CX-5, positioning itself perfectly between standard mid-size and full-blown large SUVs. Think of it as Goldilocks seating – just right for those needing more space without the bulk.

Beneath the hood, the G25 doesn’t skimp on the perks found in its siblings. Expect the same comfort and convenience features as other trims. Need cargo space? The G25 delivers a generous 477 litres with the seats up, enough for a family getaway. Folding those seats down transforms it into a cavernous 1726-litre haven, ready for serious hauling. And because peace of mind matters, every G25 comes equipped with a space-saver spare, just in case.

How does the Mazda CX-60 drive?

The launch program began in Melbourne’s Docklands, a shimmering cityscape backdrop, and whisked us away on an hour-long drive towards Warrandyte, a leafy escape east of the city. We savored another hour as passengers, soaking in the views as we cruised back to the Docklands, leaving the urban rush far behind.

The first leg was mine: a baptism by fire through gridlocked city arteries, a frantic suburban sprint, and a blur of asphalt on the Monash and Eastern Freeways.

The CX-60 shed its skin the instant it hit the challenging roads. The engine, eager and responsive, surged forward with a predictable power that made every uphill bend a joy. Progress was fluid and confident, almost seamless, save for the occasional, rubber-band tug from the otherwise excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox.

While not a speed demon compared to its six-cylinder or plug-in hybrid counterparts, this vehicle offers more than enough pep for drivers considering gas-guzzling options like the Outlander or Sportage. It’s a practical choice that won’t leave you lagging behind.

With two extra cogs in its automatic gearbox, this ride boasts a broader range of gears than the CX-5. The result? Less engine strain when pushing hard and a smoother, more serene highway experience. Consider it a significant step up in refinement compared to a CX-5 packing the same engine.

Leave the highway behind, and the CX-60 transforms into a driver’s delight. Imagine wrestling with a weighty steering wheel, the car hunkered low, daring you to carve through each bend. It’s a dance of precision, a responsive partner urging you to push harder, rewarding every turn with visceral feedback. The CX-60 doesn’t just navigate corners; it attacks them with palpable enthusiasm.

Its rear-wheel-drive poise elevates the driving experience, delivering a dynamic feel typically reserved for luxury SUVs, even if its engine doesn’t quite match that high-end pedigree.

Earlier updates softened the ride, but it still leans towards the sporty side, even with the 18-inch wheels. The smaller engine makes the CX-60 feel noticeably lighter and more eager to dive into corners compared to its heavier, six-cylinder siblings we’re talking a weight saving of 100-150kg!

However, the eight-speed gearbox wasn’t flawless. It occasionally felt indecisive, constantly searching for the tallest gear, leaving you flat-footed when you needed a sudden burst of speed. Plant your foot, and there’s this agonizing pause, a frustrating "one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi" delay, before it finally downshifts and unleashes the power.

The cabin offers a mostly serene soundscape, though not quite exceptional. Push the engine, and its voice, though not unpleasant more of a throaty rasp fills the space. On rough roads, tire noise makes its presence known.

The CX-60 G25, unfortunately, misses out on the fuel-sipping magic of Mazda’s hybrid tech. As a result, expect a thirstier experience, evidenced by our observed 8.7L/100km. While acceptable for a naturally aspirated engine in this class, consider this: the G40e offers comparable fuel efficiency alongside a significant power boost. Food for thought.

Mazda’s CX-60 driver assistance tech isn’t an overbearing backseat driver. It’s the strong, silent type, offering a helping hand without the constant nagging beeps and bongs. You won’t be deafened by endless speed limit warnings or penalized for a momentary glance at the display. Think subtle support, not a symphony of sensors.

Be warned: the blind-spot monitoring system is a chatty one, prone to chiming in with gentle, but persistent, alerts. And while Mazda’s adaptive cruise control is undeniably smooth, it sometimes leaves a littletoomuch space, inviting other drivers to politely, or not-so-politely, fill the gap.

Mazda’s commitment to those oversized driver’s side mirrors is a quirk that still demands a mental recalibration every time I slide behind the wheel. You adapt, of course. The surround-view cameras and expansive greenhouse provide a safety net of visibility. Yet, these mirrors remain a curious and consistent conversation starter among Mazda enthusiasts. Are they a design choice, a safety feature taken to the extreme, or simply a Mazda signature? The debate rages on.

childcareman.xyz’s Take on the Mazda CX-60

I think the new base four-cylinder CX-60 will have pretty broad appeal.

The CX-60’s calling card that head-turning design and premium cabin doesn’t demand a premium price. Skip the fancy inline-six and the plug-in tech; the G25 four-cylinder unlocks the CX-60 experience for less, proving style and substance don’t always require a fortune.

Suddenly, the Mazda3 Turbo makes a comparable CX-5 feel like a relic. Forget beige and boring – this hatchback injects pure driving joy, leaving the likes of a gas-guzzling X-Trail or Outlander in the dust. Sure, it’s a five-seater, not a seven, but who needs extra passengers when you’re having this much fun behind the wheel?

The Evolve hits the sweet spot. It’s dripping with desirable features and creature comforts, yet manages to sneak in under the $50,000 mark. For school runs and grocery hauls, honestly, you won’t miss the extra grunt of the pricier versions. It’s got everything you need, and maybe even a little of what you just plainwant.

To truly unlock this SUV’s potential, the mild-hybrid version is the way to go. However, if your family needs a reliable Mazda SUV and you’d rather keep that $6,000 in your pocket, the standard engine is a dependable choice.
