The Mazda 3 offers a solid foundation with its G20 engine, but the 2.5-liter G25 is a tempting performance leap. Yet, the G25 feels almost destined for the CX-30. Of course, fuel efficiency would take a hit, making the peppy G20 perhaps best reserved for the no-frills Pure trim, leaving the pricier models to other engines.

The six-speed automatic transmission, however, occasionally acts like a hesitant dancer, tripping over its own feet. This awkwardness surfaces most prominently from a dead stop, or during those delicate moments of throttle application and release. Regrettably, this isn’t the first Mazda automatic we’ve observed exhibiting this peculiar two-step.
