Xpeng GX: New extended-range electric flagship SUV revealed

Electric vehicle (EV) brand Xpeng has previewed its new flagship SUV, and its latest model to include a combustion engine.

This is known as the Xpeng GX, which carries the Chinese brand’s “flagship AI luxury six-seater SUV”, and it rides on the new SEPA 3 of the China brand. 0 Physical AI architecture, paraphrasing.

Though its powertrain details have not yet been released, it’s understood the GX will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) with a small combustion engine that is used only as generating electricity to charge the battery.

The Chinese market for EREVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) is also growing, with some of the first vehicles launched by such brands as an EV-only brand like Zeekr and Xpeng to launch their own car. A EREV version of its spacey X9 people mover was launched by the company Ypeng late last year as an erectile-reactive (ERV) variant of it, which is also known as “Xpengger” and has been described in terms with his name.

Xpeng seems to have posted several pictures of the GX before it was revealed in a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing, which often features images that are significantly less flattering than press shots.

The images revealed by Xpeng show a champagne-coloured GX with clean flanks and blacked-out C- and D-pillar trim, giving it a resemblance to the Range Rover.

There’s a full-width rear light bar and slim headlights, while the GX may be one of the last vehicles launched with retractable door handles as they’ll be banned in China from January 1, 2027.

The GX, which is expected to be more than five metres long, will enter a busy segment in the Chinese market and amusingly could be one of the only models in this segment without ‘9’ in its name.

The Xpeng Gx will replace the Denza N9, Zeekr 9F (Aito M9) and Li Auto L9. There has been no confirmed car for the Australian market so far but Denza and Zeekr local outposts have said they’re looking at their own flagship SUVs.

The announcement of more details about the GX will come closer to its Chinese launch, with key specifications expected in its MIIT filing.

In the X9, an EREV version of it is 63 per cent and uses by xpeng’s . It is a 3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and an 800V electrical system; it has been replaced by 210kW/465Nm electric motor, 85kW turbocharged 1 km. Generator 5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 4-cylinder engines.

Claimed electric-only driving range is 452km on the more lenient CLTC cycle, with total combined range of 1602km.

With the GX, Xpeng will have four SUVs, alongside three passenger cars and one people mover.

The brand currently sells just one model here – the G6 mid-size electric SUV – but has confirmed the X9 people mover and the G9L large SUV for Australian launch in 2026.

Whether the GX will be here is not clear, though it’s unclear whether this means . The name, which is currently on another Lexus luxury SUV used as a new brand-new one, may be changed by Xpeng should it do so.
