It has been one of the segment’s leaders for decades, from the early Skyline models and three-box versions of Pulsar to the Maxima and Altima; when it comes to traditional three box body style, Japan’ auto brand is inherited.
Is a new sedan model from Nissan likely to be available in the near future? The door is open, company executives said, and it won’t be like anything that has already been before its launch.
The model pictured is the Nissan N7, an electric large sedan with high technology, striking design and strong specs on its side.
This is a product of the partnership between Nissan and Dongfeng in China, which we got to drive it recently in Japan.

How much does the Nissan N7 cost?
Noting that this new electric sedan isn’t confirmed for Australia, it could certainly be a part of helping Nissan Australia avoid penalties as part to the federal government’s NVES emissions rules.

The reality for this car, though, is that it’s bigger than a Tesla Model 3, and might wear a price higher than that popular electric sedan, which starts from $54,900 plus on-road costs.
That said, we’ve seen a very similar approach from Mazda with its new Mazda 6e, which is a Deepal-sourced electric sedan, albeit heavily restyled, but it’s priced from just $49,990 plus on-roads with a huge 560km WLTP-rated EV range.
So, if Mazda can do it, why not Nissan?

What is the Nissan N7 like on the inside?
We have a test car in Japan, unlike the vehicle that was shown throughout this review of our model car which finished with lovely two-tone grey and charcoal interior trim (with some subtle orange accents embroidered in front seats).

But it was quite a surprise for me I have gotten the impression of this simple design, which isn’t as minimalist like if you think that there are many smart cabin treatments to make it feel special.
The ribbed-trimmed door cards, the soft and subtle materials on the dashboard, doors and seats as well as the chic and overall quality vibe were all quite impressive.
The seats also contain the brand’s newest artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can adjust the base and back to fit your body shape and size, using in-built airbags designed specifically for their structure with respect to your skeleton. A. paraphrast apparently has been ?
But either way, it’s very comfortable and the kind of storage you’d think would be all here – adjustable cup holders, large covered centre console bin, big door pockets (and a bridge between front seats with wireless phone charger and bottom shelf for extra storage)? That’s a neat thing to say, like .

My time was not spent on calculating the media screen, other than to adjust the fan speed and temperature but it had an expected array of icons, menus and a fixed panel at the bottom for most common features. No sex controls? That might be an issue for some s.
A large space in the back is for a size-wise person to sit next to another big adult, and ‘flat floor’ to optimise cabin width for three-across activities. Headroom is also good for a sedan that swoops with head.
It’s a very comfortable seat, too, with all the niceties that are expected to be in it storage pockets, cup and bottle holsters, directional vents (and USB-C charging options) etc.
It’s a large car, and has surprisingly big boot as well; Dongfeng figures say the seats-up capacity is 484litres (just 4L less than that of the old Altima petrol sedan of yesteryear) but also dongfed.

What’s under the bonnet?
This was a high-spec 625 Max version we tested in Japan, which is more powerful than some of the cheaper variants; it has an increased standard (and larger battery range) model and higher standard spec.

The Chinese test cycle for this EV has reported figures of between 12 and 11 efficiency numbers, with some pretty impressive ones. 4 and 13 ? Ultra-efficient 4kWh/100km (CLTC) – thanks in no small part to its great drag coefficient of 0. The , 208Cd, was.
How does the Nissan N7 drive?
I wasn’t expected to really like the N7, quite frankly.

I did, but I was a . Then a few minutes of driving around the Grandrive facility outside Tokyo, I realized this was more like ‘Tela model S rivals than – Model 3 competitors’.
That’s largely down to its physical size, but also the feeling of it on the road.
There’s an underlying faith in the suspension, it’s well-balanced steering with impressive weighting and response; front-wheel drive but power management looked good.
I don’t think there is a lot of power, but don’t get me wrong; it was still urgent in its answers but more measured than some other electric vehicles (at least from the fact that I had only been behind the wheel for ages).

I was in Normal mode with the regen set to standard, but there are other drive modes and regin braking modes available too.
Was it a mind-blowing drive? Not by any means.
Has any new Nissan sedan been a fun one? No no, no. And so it’s certainly a wonderful fit for the brand and its portfolio.
What do you get?
There are six N7 variants available in China, but the one we tried was a high-spec variant with all the fruit.

Australian specifications aren’t confirmed yet, but here are some of the highlights of the model I tested in Japan:
- LED headlights, tail-lights, and ‘7’ shaped daytime running lights
- 19-inch wheels
- Fixed glass roof (not a panoramic glass roof) with electric shade
- 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen
- 10.25-inch driver’s instrument cluster
- 12-speaker stereo system
- 256-colour interior ambient lighting
- Leather and suede seat trim
- Heated, ventilated and massaging front seats
- Electric seat adjustment
- Driver’s seat memory settings
- AI seat technology that can auto-adjust to suit different body types
- Leather steering wheel trim
- Climate control
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P software processor
- Over-the-air software updates
Those are just some of the inclusions in the flagship of the current model.
Is the Nissan N7 safe?
A lot of safety tech co-developed with Momenta is in the Nissan N7 and according to some, it’s the top driverless technology provider in China.

The Level 2 autonomy features include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with ProPilot tech to assist the driver on the highway (lane-keeping, distance management, speed control and steering and more)
There is a terrific surround-view camera system too, with semi-autonomous parking also offered.
How much does the Nissan N7 cost to run?
Nissan’s current aftersales promise to potential customers is a strong one.

A standard five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty is available in Australia but owners who service the company can have their cover extended to 10 years or 300,000km (whichever comes first) and its coverage extends out to 30 years.
A battery warranty at market standards is expected for Nissan – eight years and 160,000km – 70 per cent state of health guarantee.
I’m looking at Nissan’s EV that is only currently on sale in our market, the Ariya mid-size electric SUV. It would be like an advice for maintenance of every 12 months and about 20,000km.
meanwhile, roadside assistance for up to 10 years or 300,000km is provided by customers who service their car with the brand.

The N7 is a good product to sell, for sure, but the price and specs are right.’ To s, it’s not too late that Nissan Australia can get the item or specs in order to make its way to market.

My advice to the company? Look at Mazda and do what it has done!
