The Volkswagen ID was released in mid-2025, after a full-time release of flagship dual-motor GTX specification and came to be available only in the German version. Since then, a ‘Pro’ entry variant has joined 5 in Australia to cut the cost of entry by ‘$10k total?

This is usually the realm of luxury brands – think BMW and Mercedes-Benz but ID. In theory it should be hot property if you mix said body style with an all-electric powertrain, 5 mixes the two words.
But alas, ID sales of. The start is a bit slow, for 5 are off to’simply the same thing as . After its April launch, only 386 units were registered in 2025 (compared to 1196 ID) – just under the name of . Keeping pace 4s and well off the pace of the best-selling Tesla Model Y – which registered 22,239 last year.
And it’s not bad car, that’s why is a bad Car. We thanked ID. The Australian launch review last year praised the quality and dynamics of 5 GTX for its 500km-plus driving range, which remains competitive even today.

Despite the fact that there are so many new competitors coming from China, and even the current players sharpening their prices and refining spec sheets, competition is hot as ever. The market seems to be phEV-oriented, and the market is now turning towards PHEVs as well as s.
We spent a week to see if the new entry point into Volkswagen’s all-electric SUV-coupe range is worth a look.
How much does the Volkswagen ID.5 cost?
The ID – . The entry price is reduced to $62,990 plus on-road costs, $10,000 less than the GTX and $3000 more than that of the equivalent ID. 4 .

The closest rival of its Volkswagen Group stable is probably the related Cupra Tavascan, which has a base with $60,990 plus on-roads and effectively uses the same componentry under the skin. However, the VW is more comfortable than the driver-centric Cupra (as well as being’standard’) and has a better character.
Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y Premium departs from $58,900 plus on-roads (note that the electric is imported from China and VW in Germany), while ID remains. The Volkswagen is the fastest-charged LFP battery, trumps it for range (543km vs 466km (WLTP)), and 5’s best-selling rival offers fully integrated connected services.
That’s the price-point for sub-5, and you can also poop in the increasingly popular BYD Sealion 7, which is now on sale. In Performance spec ($63,990 plus ORCs) there is an entirely loaded sheet of 0-second acceleration and a fully loaded Spec Sheet.

What is the Volkswagen ID.5 like on the inside?
Just like the ID.4 Pro.

In addition to the colour scheme, the main differences between the GTX and the Pro are the Sport front seats with integrated head restraints (similar to those you’ll get in the new Golf GTI hot hatch).
The ambience is enhanced by soft-touch surfaces on the doors and dash with stitching details that make it feel as standard there’s front seat heating, full electric adjustment with lumbar support.
In addition, there’s a massage and you also have fold-down armrests like in – Range Rover! The added bolstering of the Sport pews is more supportive during less spirited driving (which was one key takeaway after driving the ID). ID and 4 Pro . A back-to-back 5 GTX at the Australian media launch.
A lot of adjustment is available in the seats and steering wheel, so it’s easy to get a comfortable driving position and once you’re perched there are two displays that keep you informed. Those standard seats do not have the stronger side support of the GTX’s sports bucket, so you might be more likely to corner when corners.


VW, unlike some competitors such as Tesla, has retained a driver’s instrument cluster of sorts. Small 5″ Other vehicles based on MEB platform, such as the Cupra Tavascan and Skoda Enyaq (such as 3-inch Digital Cockpit), have simple but clear readouts for speed and driver assistance features; trip computer information is also available.
Considering that VW has tried to make the cabin look nicer as part of the ID, I would say “the bigger Skoda feels more premium inside” when talking with Enyaq’s commentators. 4/ID, . 5 Midlife update for a who is in his midlife?
But unfortunately, we don’t have the head-up display of augmented reality (AR) in our market and as we know from the related Enyaq it would be worth adding to our list. The fiddly touch capacitive steering wheel controls are another ergonomic faux pas in my book. They often lead to mis-presses and get grimy with fingerprints.

The 9-inch central touchscreen has an updated interface compared to earlier cars sold overseas, and features updates such as always-on climate control shortcuts and illuminated touch sliders. Like small things, all of these sound like a big improvement on the earlier iteration that appeared in the pre-update Golf Mk8 local version.

A shame is that the embedded navigation in other VW models has not been available, and MEB-based models are often afflicted with connected vehicle hardware which doesn’t offer local service.
As of April production, Wireless App-Connect was introduced as standard; the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity that wasn’t included in the first batch of vehicles shipped over for the launch were rolled out on its own. This worked well with our car, save for the odd slam under some toll booths and known black spots in Melbourne.
The open-plan design also makes storage up front decent, too. The console has a long centre with cupholders, USB-C ports and’wireless smartphone charger’ all under. sliding lid lid (all of which is also the case) Until that, there is a storage cubby in the gloss black-trimmed section of – think about those scratchy keys though!
VW has a signature felt lining at the base of large door bins to reduce bottle and other loose items from being rattling, and they’re deep enough to carry big bottles.
Its panoramic sunroof provides a view of the sky, which is used to provide light in but also has an electronically operated shade (necessary for many other EVs do not have ‘light’ and doesn’t make it ideal in Australia’s hot sun. You may even open it to you using the IDA digital assistant or turn it off via the climate controls.

For even larger adults, it’s good to have rear seat space. I’m 6’1′′ and can sit comfortably behind my preferred driving position with a leg, knee and head room spare – even though the ID is in. The roofline of 5’s sloping roof and standard panoramic sunroof are all in the same way as its . It’s a little tapered like the ID. 4, but a good , even though it is still in the top 4?
If you’re sitting in the rear-centre seat – but the console is just jutting out a little into your footwell, and at one point of pinching three across, the wide and flat rear bench seat means you won’t be playing footsies.
There are also other facilities such as a third zone of climate control with directional air vents at the rear of the centre console, map pockets behind both front seats (and smartphones’ pockets),. fold-down rear seat armrest and good quality door bin in addition to decent-sized door boxes that were well established.
The outer rear seats are also equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchors, top-tether points behind each rear pew and well as the above ground point of is expected. When you need to transport erm… skis., or other longer things, you also have a ski port.

A second row Volkswagen quotes 549 litres of boot space with the rear seats in behind that, which extends to a healthy 1575L (folded) – curiously more than ID. In both layouts, 4 is a in both formats. Similarly the new Tiguan quotes as many as 652L (along with the second row up) for reference, and 1650 litres folded – both of which are measured to the roof.

How does the Volkswagen ID.5 drive?
The ID.5 Pro drives very much like the ID.4 Pro, meaning it’s a comfortable and refined way to get around.

That’s more than enough grunt for most people, particularly when you’re not all that like the sub-4. A 0-second obsession with EV that seems to plague forums and comments sections these days, is known as the “funniest” thing ever said to s.
The sound of the powertrain is not more than the faint whirring of electric motor, and Volkswagen has done a good job keeping road and wind noise to varying degrees even though there’s no petrol or diesel engine running in the background.
The Pro has a more soft suspension tune than the GTX, even with standard adaptive dampers (which gives the car ‘cushy and more languid feel’) – especially over higher-speed hits and undulations.

More than larger hits the ID, that said, according to That said. But 5 Pro doesn’t seem like the GTX, balancing off between comfort and body control; The Comfort steering tune of the Pro makes it very easy to manoeuvre (though it does not have the feel or feedback of its GTx’s Progressive Steering system).
I really liked the ease of acceleration and rear-drive balance that comes with the base ID. A bygone era of motoring that now seems to be the realm of luxury brands is 5 (although many current EVs use this classic drive layout).
The Dynamic Chassis Control Pro (DCC PRO) system allows you to tailor a number of components of the chassis and powertrain, with 12 stages of adjustment for elements such as damping, steering weight or active safety systems.
This allows you to be softer than Comfort or harder than Sport, although the breadth of Australia’s road network would make it more manageable for you and should I keep it within the pre-set profiles in order to achieve the best balance. It’s a bit of an awkward and busy thing to have it in Sport, but for realistically you can get it most of the time.’ That would be bad for efficiency because that is not going on with me or being bored.

One of the Volkswagen strength that is another strong point is the assistance tech, which s. The Well-designed and intuitive system, which helps take the load off during longer stints is Travel Assist – that mixes adaptive cruise and adaptive lane guidance functions for semi-autonomous highway driving.
Having been an ‘older’ model since early 2020s, the ID is an identification with being an in-depth (independent) model of what has become known as an “olders” model. In fact, 5 doesn’t suffer from incessant bings and bongs from speed-limit detection and driver monitoring systems – it does not even have traffic sign recognition of any form in Australia which led to the related Cupra Tavascan being given a four-star safety rating.
Aside Assist – blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert is also the same thing as you think it works for your needs; was useful with the ID. A thick rear pillar and roofline of 5’s are the thick back plows at its height, which is known as . Similarly, I think VW could spend a little more on camera quality because the Area View surround parking cameras are very grainy and do not look good at light.

VW also has taken a long line to support ID owners with 10 years of battery supply after the end of production (EOP), and 15 years from EOP.
As a result, the MEB platform’s pouch-cell construction allows for individual battery modules to be repaired and replaced rather than replacing them with redesigned units in case of damage.

Identity The ID is the . While the top-spec GTX is a much better value proposition than 5 Pro, it’s ever more competitively increasing competition and its own ID. I can’t stand out because of 4 sibling.

The Cupra Tavascan is a sportier drive outside the Volkswagen showrooms, Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 offer more straight-line performance than the rest of the world’s most comprehensive suite of technologies including connected services.
Also, despite its more sportier silhouette, the ID is also an ID. In its design, 5 is a bit conservative than many other coupe-style SUVs. This is almost over-the-top – even in GTX spec and could be a tough sell against more avantgarde competition with the same body design.
The ID is further . numbered 5’s days, . It has been reported out of Europe that it will not be continued beyond a mid-life refresh in 2027, with the heavily revised ID being used as an nameplate after undergoing rebirth. 4 to possibly be renamed the ID as it may have been. Tiguan tiguaan . If you’re looking for longevity, then its more traditional wagon-bodied SUV twin may be the best bet.
But if you like the style, and can justify the extra money over ID? ID 4, the . 5 Pro is a family EV with high-tech on-road manners, good range and solid interior packaging. It drives like a Volkswagen SUV, just electric!
