The Tesla Model Y L is coming to Australia in 2026, giving the American brand a three-row SUV option Down Under for the first time in several years.
The launch of the stretched Model Y derivative had appeared a fait accompli, given it appeared in Australian Government approval documents in February.
Nevertheless, Tesla Australia has confirmed the vehicle will launch – although it has not confirmed when it will arrive in 2026 it is short of confirming.

Unlike most of Tesla’s current local lineup other than the Model Y Performance, which is from Germany, The Model L will be made up of Shanghai, China.
There are few electric SUVs priced under $100,000 with a third row of seating, with the Model Y L’s only competition for now coming from the smaller Mercedes-Benz EQB and the larger Kia EV9, which the Tesla is expected to significantly undercut on price.
The Model Y L takes the regular Model M y and extends its wheelbase by 150mm to 3040mm, first revealed midway through 2025, then runs on First’s model.
This allows a third row of seating for this frees up room, with the second row ditching the Model Y’s bench for – and pair of captain’ chairs. However, if the rear roofline is still quite steeply sloping (and may be eaten into third-row headroom), it could also feed into its own row head room.
The Model Y L’s overall length of 4969mm long puts it squarely in the large SUV segment – it’s 3mm longer than a Toyota Kluger, for example, though it’s 67mm shorter and 140mm narrower than the Tesla Model X which was the American brand’s last three-row SUV.
A. length L is 34mm higher, 2mm of ground clearance (169m) wide and has the same width as its 20-mm wider front track but 12mm narrower rear track when compared to five-seat Model Y which also sits 34 inches taller than that in the model’s four-inch models with an average height of 36mm).
It also has more luggage room a claimed 2539 litres against 2138L for five-seat versions, plus an additional dimension push weight up by 96kg to 2088kg.
Not only is the longer body of the Model Y L distinguished from the regular Model M X, but also unique alloy wheels and badging are distinctive.
It is based on the same dual-motor all wheel drive electric powertrain and battery as the Premium Long Range AWD, which has a listed power output of 378kW (see documents from recent government certifications).
Tesla does not publish power and torque figures, but a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing confirmed that there were 142kW outputs for the front and rear electric motors of the Model Y L.
On Tesla’s Chinese website, the brand claims a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds.
The Model Y L was reportedly approved for the European market in December 2025, with an 88kWh battery offering 681km of range on the WLTP cycle.
A 600km WLTP range is provided for context by the Australian-market Model Y Premium Long Range AWD, which has claimed 0-100km/h time of 4 and an estimated 0–100 km/H time. 8 seconds.
The Model Y L costs 339,000 (A$72,800) in China and is a total of X25,500 ( A$5500) more expensive than the equivalent Model J there.
In Australia, the Model Y Premium Long Range AWD is priced at $68,900 before on-road costs.
Chinese standard equipment includes an 18-speaker sound system, 16-inch front touchscreen, 8-inches of 8. Climate control adjustment with 0-inch rear touchscreen, power tailgate and adaptive LED headlights.
Model X
A second-row captain’s chairs have a heating, ventilation and power adjustment (and even power-adjustable armrests) for those who are in the chair with that same seat. This is heated and power-folding, as it resembles the third row two seat bench.
Tesla says it has upgraded the suspension, which employs continuously variable damping.
The Model Y L will give Tesla its first three-row SUV offering in Australia since the Model X – complete with its wild ‘falcon’ doors – was withdrawn in 2020. Tesla discontinued the Model X globally earlier this year.
