A cool alternative is the 2026 Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe, which sits between the small and medium segments of the system with a performance-leaning 200kW plug-in hybrid drivetrain that has more than 100km of EV range.
It’s a formula that nothing this side of an Audi A5 Avant is offering (for substantially more money, mind you), and that’s before the Spanish brand fills the void left by the Volkswagen Golf R Wagon with its own 245kW AWD monster version of this car later this year.
So what’s the appeal? Well, you get the niche factor that comes with a sleek, compact wagon body, as well as the Cupra badge and the fact the Leon isn’t a huge seller. Then, that PHEV drivetrain can prove to be mighty efficient if you use it as designed, allowing you to enjoy the Leon’s excellent dynamic package without using all that much fuel.
It’s far from cheap, though. At $69,990 before on-road costs and options, the Leon Sportstourer is firmly positioned in premium territory, and on the road it costs about $10,000 more than the related Skoda Octavia RS, which offers similar power and performance but with a petrol-only drivetrain shared with the VW Golf GTI hot hatch.

After driving the facelifted Leon range in New South Wales last year at the Australian media launch, I scored a longer loan of the Sportstourer over the Christmas break to get a better feel for it in daily life – which is of particular interest to me because I was thinking of buying one.

How much does the Cupra Leon cost?
Specspec The Leon Sportstourer VZe costs $69,990 plus on-road costs and the brand’s national stock locator is described as having a drive away cost of $75 (990–$78,610 depending on spec) for its own sake.

It sits somewhere between the likes of the Skoda Octavia RS (from $64,490 drive-away) and Subaru WRX Sportswagon (from $52,290), and there’s also the Audi A5 Avant (from $92,900).
A plug-in hybrid alternative is only available in the Audi, although both the Octavia and WRX are faster on paper than the VZe. An AWD Leon Sportstourer VZx will land in Australia later this year with a sub-five-second 0-100km/h claim, which is 245kW and has been described as ‘the most powerful of its kind’.
A cheaper PHEV option will also launch soon, in the form of the Leon Hatch Ve, which will get the lower-output 150kW version of the VZe’s 1.5-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid system but with the same big battery with about 120km of EV range. childcareman.xyz anticipates a starting price around the $55,000 mark.

What is the Cupra Leon like on the inside?
On the launch, we noted that the Leon Sportstourer benefits from the interior of a facelifted Leon Hatch (which doesn’t bring wholesale changes inside like outside), but there is an apparent uplift in perceived quality and ambience.

An A 10 . instrument cluster and 12. inches ‘digital cockpit’ instrument Cluster, 25-inch s Typical displays are 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a distinctive look and feel similar to the Skoda and Volkswagen brands.
The new touchscreen has a more user-friendly interface and hardware, including the permanent toolbar at the base of the touchscreen dedicated to climate controls; touch sliders are now illuminated with an updated interface (and keyboard) LED.
While the central touchscreen isn’t quite as large as the 15-inch display available in a VW Golf or Tiguan, it’s more than big enough for such a cocoon-like cabin and offers the usual equipment like embedded navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as DAB+ digital radio.
Sadly, there’s still no connected-car tech, which may be a gripe for those keen on app-based remote functions and embedded online services. Cupra’s updated Born and Tavascan EVs revealed, as well as the all-new Raval baby EV hatchback, have all received a new Android-based operating system with enhanced connected services, which could be when we see them arrive in Australia.

I’m probably the favourite of the MQB evo platform-based product family (ie A3, Golf, Octavia) because it is more configurable and smart colour scheme including flourishes of brand’s signature copper.
Configuration options include a central rev counter that’s reminiscent of the Audi R8 supercar and previous-generation Audi S and RS models, and in the VZe plug-in hybrid it smartly incorporates a hybrid power meter that flashes blue when at full noise with electric ‘Boost’.
A nice change is the hard, scratchy plastics of the outgoing model – you don’t get from Audi, Skoda or Volkswagen’s similar small cars.
The cabin is dotted with copper top-stitching and trim accents, such as the shift-by-wire gear selector lined in line (and also the air vents) of the cabin. Every model of Leon now adds the satellite buttons for the push-button start and drive mode controls on the steering wheel too – another Audi R8-esque touch which has previously been reserved for its flagship VZx.
There’s also trick LED interior lighting, with a dynamic strip on the base of the windscreen that switches functions from ambient lighting to indicators and safety systems such as blind-spot monitoring. Nice touch Cupra has programmed a number of lighting profiles to match your driving mode and mood, too.

Sport bucket front seats are standard for all versions of the Leon – Dinamica microfibre upholstery is standard in the interior of an entire Leon S, the VZx and VTZe has a new Moonslate leather. But sadly, it seems the leather hide isn’t as luxurious as that of the Leather option in pre-facelift Leon (which was often described by Nappa-grade).
Still the embossed Cupra logo on the headrests is a nice touch, and pews themselves are well-comfortable with plenty of adjustment. Speaking of the incident, there is now electric adjustment and memory presets for the driver as standard (and heating for both front seats) in addition to heat.
The VZ models also have standard power adjustment and memory for the driver and front passenger, as well as front seat heating. In the $7600 Extreme Package, you can also purchase racy carbon-backed ‘Cup Bucket’ front seats in the VZx and score ‘SEAQUAL’ sustainable textile inserts made of recyclable fabrics.
The thumping 12-speaker Sennheiser premium sound system, which is also standard on VZ models, offers great clarity as well as plenty of adjustment for quite the immersive audio experience. In the Group’s compact models, this is best of all the premium audio systems that are on offer.

The 2686mm wheelbase of the Leon Hatch and Sportstourer is similar, so second-row accommodation is identical between both body styles – making for decent if not-quite-standout rear passenger space.
Despite the fact that even behind a taller driver, Knee and leg room are pretty good but those chunky front seats with their integrated head restraints can be difficult to get forward visibility from the rear (especially for small children). The rising lower window line may also limit visibility out the sides for shorter passengers, too, as could be a factor in increasing visibility from the side of the plane.
That said, you have a handy third zone of climate control and bottle holders in the rear doors; cupholders are placed in chunky fold-down centre armrest.
The Sportstourer, like the Leon Hatch, also receives the child seat attachments (ie ISOFIX and top-tether), and a ski port is available for the centre seat as well when you ever need to stow something longer (like… skis) without folding down either of the outboard rear seats.

Leon Hatch offers 344 litres of cargo capacity with the rear seats up further back, and 888L folded down. The Sporttourer VZE increases that number up to 470L (800-litres) and 1045L respectively, adding not the large battery under the load floor.
In contrast to the Leon S hatchback, which is a space saver spare wheel-equipped VZe has only tyre repair kit under the boot floor unlike the one that was designed for this purpose.

The Leon Sportstourer VZe gets the 200kW version of the VW Group’s 1.5-litre turbocharged plug-in ‘e-Hybrid’ system.

This is a change in engine from the 1 that was used for pre-facelift Leon Hatch range, which has been replaced with an engine similar to the one of the first s. For a beginner, 4 TSI turbo-petrol is more effective 1. The 60kW/250Nm iteration of 5 TSI ‘evo2’ is 130kW/1M.
teamed with an 85kW/330Nm electric motor inside the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is fed by a larger 20kWh (net) lithium-ion battery – as opposed to the 12 year old model. Paraphrasing 8kWh unit?
Claimed EV driving range is now 121km (up from 55-60km) on the WLTP cycle, although straight-line performance is slightly less than expected of the pre-launched hatchback (7. vs 6 3. ve ? 7 sec) –
The other big reversal is the new Li-ion battery pack, which allows DC fast-charging (50kW) capacity. Rather than wait for almost two hours by an 11kW AC charger, this should allow about half-hour quick-charges back to 80 per cent (i.e.”
Other engines, such as the 1 and other Sportstourer body style, are available in other markets. PHEV (48V mild-hybrid tech) and 150kW ‘e-Hybred’ turbo-petrol (5litres) are available. These variants aren’t coming to Australia as .

How does the Cupra Leon drive?
It was a long test drive for the Christmas holiday season, and I had the Sportstourer over my Christmas holidays so I took it like an extended test to see how it handled the summer festive season.

As well as having passed the ‘grand tourer’ test on Sydney and Mudgee in NSW, this test was more about the corporate ‘off-seasons’ (mainly daily commuters and occasional trips to the beach), which also gave an opportunity to see how its economy figures were doing with general use.
In the suburbs like I live, Leon VZe will spend most of its time in EV mode provided you have enough charge to run the battery. At startup it defaults to ‘E-MODE’ and will also be the most extreme not to awaken the turbocharged petrol engine in order reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
In electric mode, the Leon will shift cogs even if you’re driving hybrids with e-CVTs or single-speed transmissions of electric vehicles as the electric motor is integrated into the six- speed ‘DSG’ auto.
But the enthusiast in me likes a shifting transmission, and the torque of the electric motor (330Nm) instantly helps to smooth out the usual niggles associated with dual-clutch shifters. This means that, with that said, it can sometimes feel a little elastic off the line or when rolling away at low speeds.

Flick the transmission into ‘S’ or long press the drive mode button for a setting like ’Cupra, but that 400Nm of torque can be very fast on song (to the point where the front tyres spin up off the line). Cupra says he has 7 while cupra claims a . The speed of rolling acceleration is faster than that, 2-second 0-100km/h sprint time makes it feel quicker and we’ve seen overseas standing-start tests with low-sixes (which is better for a car with cited 200kW power output) in the world.
Similarly, one thing to keep in mind is that the Leon PHEVs have an e-diff up front (essentially means torque vectoring via braking) rather than the more sophisticated electromechanical differential that has been developed by the Le VZx Hatch and other high-po Volkswagen Group products. When you’re driving it hard, in layman’s terms, it doesn’t have the power shuffling capability up front to completely remove understeer; this means that when we are using it more seriously than is possible in these situations.
But with that said, there’s still a strong hold on front axle and good balance because the PHEV battery sits over rear axle. On the other hand, in normal driving of Leon Sportstourer VZe, it re-ups and goes smoothly and effortlessly even in all-electric mode. This little wagon can tear up a winding B-road and put ‘big smiles on your mug’ as I was told last year at the Australian media launch.
The Leon ST has more than enough zero-emissions range to do a couple of days’ worth of commuting without ever turning the petrol engine on, even though it is back in the real world with over 100km of indicated EV range on. The shortest trips were mostly small saves for the odd long highway blast to the beach or to visit relatives, but extended EV range helped us achieve an indicated fuel consumption figure of just 1 in our lifetime. In the course of two weeks and 928km, I only used half a tank. 6L/100km over 2 weeks!

That’s a crazy efficiency for such little work, so that’s insanely efficient. I never charged it every day, but twice to three days via a traditional wall socket in my garage. If you’re going on a longer trip any day, flicking the Leon into ‘Hybrid’ mode on startup will make it behave more like if I am able to drive to Mordialloc Beach from Doncaster via s long stint on Melbourne’s Eastlink Freeway and in this mode while driving to Dordiallo Beach with. Return trip 6L/100km for .
This is to show the progress of PHEVs over the last few years, as it shows how far has this been going for ? When they’re charged, no one is good; now they can keep a high level of fuel-efficiency even on longer trips. The Volkswagen Group’s 1 is certainly a good example of that . A miserly motor is already an inherently misroyal motor, especially on the highways and 5 TSI petrol engine.
That lovely handling and steering feel I liked on the news release also means daily life, with the car’s responsiveness and direct nature making even the most mundane of commutes connected and engaging.
The Volkswagen Group seems to have some magic in Cupra when it comes to suspension and steering tuning, with the Leon for example having its general running gears from the VW Golf and Audi A3 to the Skoda Octavia.

All those nice cars, and all drive/ steer well, but there’s a bit of feel and connection that Cupra somehow manages to achieve — making its models more Alfa Romeo-like for much less money. It’s a big call, it is certainly – but I’m willing to stand by that.
What’s the noise on the road if there is something I have to knock about overall driving experience? Acupra’s prey pitch suggests that the ‘ish’ in Cupra is related to “the sound deadening” (along with its premi-ish pitch). Even on smooth freeways there’s still tyre noise in the cabin, and Melbourne’S Eastern Freeway has enough broken surfaces from its current North East Link that you hear quite a lot of what is going under your belt.
It’s no wonder the Leon Sportstourer VZe is a big 19-inch alloy wheels that are run in thin 235/35 R19 Bridgestone Potenza S005 performance tyres (which don’t make super ‘eco’ leaning either) and this certainly makes racket work. Potenza S001s were similar to most surfaces in my Golf GTI and a recent change with more premium Potentza Sport rubber has made this regard markedly improved.
A further contention will be the synthesised engine sounds that play under acceleration, especially when you’re in Cupra mode. They sound very naffy to me, but I’m not fond of them because they make such a burbly V8-like noise as the Cupra PHEV makes is actually quite fun – although I think you will either love it or hate it.

A third part of the experience is that it’s much less polarised than the sound, and another adaptable aspect to the ride is its ride. Like other models based on the MQB Evo platform, the Leon Sportstourer receives the DCC Pro adaptive damping setup with 15 stages of adjustment (i.e. you can go softer than Comfort and harder than Cupra).
There’s a seemingly infinite configurability, but even the Cupra profile is well enough to be up for daily work with albeit slightly firmer edge; it strikes. A person can also set up an Individual profile and turn everything from the dampers, steering and throttle response to the adaptive cruise control sensitivity, air-conditioning, engine sound enhancement (and more) as well as the adaptation of cruise controls.
A driver assistance point of view, the Cupra Leon maintains the VW Group’s good form in this space with well-calibrated systems and features that aren’t intrusive or distracting as is becoming increasingly prevalent in the new car world.
When you head-check or look over at the touchscreen, there’s no incessant driver attention monitor beeping and bonging; Adaptive Lane Guidance doesn’t feel like wrestling the steering wheel out of your hands on the highway.

Moreover, one of the more effective semi-autonomous highway assistants available today is the Travel Assumptive System and the speed sign recognition system that your speedo climbs 1-2km/h over the signed limit doesn’t beeping and bonging. It’s essentially, everything works exactly as you think and doesn’t make you want to turn everything off.
One more gripe is the lack of a surround-view camera on any Leon, which is weird when the tech is available in the Golf and A3. Now, I can park the Sportstourer just fine with the standard reversing camera, but it seems silly that at this price point Cupra didn’t decide to pop extra cameras in – weirdly, they’re available with the Formentor which is basically the same car, as well as the larger Terramar SUV.
I should note that, even if it’s not about actually driving the Leon (or at least in fact) is apparently quite the head-turner. A number of people in car parks were referring to the design and/or asked what brand it is when I was loaned out, saying “I’m going to be attracted to attention-seekers like myself!”

childcareman.xyz’s Take on the Cupra Leon
The Leon Sportstourer VZe is a great all-rounder, an excellent one. Fun, it’s fast (about), it’s frugal and, most of all, isn’t another f#*@ing SUV. That’s a very different phrase for me, but it’t exactly the same thing as that one does.

Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, some may bypass the PHEV and wait for the 245kW Golf R-powered VZx version with AWD later this year, but if you want something cool and fun that’s not going to break your wallet with fuel costs – especially in today’s economy – then there’s plenty to love about one of the few sporty station wagons still on the market.
However, those that associate connected services and remote phone app functionality with a premium vehicle experience will be disappointed by their conspicuous absence in Australia – across most of the Volkswagen Group at that – even if Cupra’s local team has said it’s actively working on a solution with its global parent.
A Leon Sportstourer PHEV buyer would be very specific.’ My other biggest gripe, at least initially, is that the full feature set available in Europe was not for Australian customers and this seems silly when it’s just an idiotic one. But now that complaint has been addressed with the availability of the Extreme Pack, bringing Australia in line with others around the world to provide “the most raciest spec” with an emissions-conscious electrified drivetrain.
That said, this car has no direct competitors Octavia RS is slightly cheaper and more practical than the XIA but less powerful and doesn’t offer PHEV tech; Audi A5 270kW e-hybrid is about $25,000 higher in price before options.

So I guess this is the part where I tell you I’ve ordered one…
Indeed, I enjoyed my time with the Leon Sportstourer so much that I put an order in for one – and even commissioned a specification that previously wasn’t available for Australia. Basically, I asked for the spec of the European press vehicle – which you can see below.
But I look forward to delivering my Enceladus Grey Matte model later this year with the optional ExtremE Package. I’m sure to make a lot of song and dance about it on social media when it comes to the story for those who want to follow that story.”
