A Toyota isn’t the best-selling model in its segment in Australia, or at least in the top three of its category (although it does) but that’s rare.

Take the Toyota Corolla Cross. Sure, it sells in numbers that some rival brands could only dream of, but it lives in the shadow of its larger RAV4 sibling.

Why is that? Is it the styling, so anodyne about 10 years after its launch of the Corolla Cross in 2022.

A facelift for 2026 brought revised front-end styling that’s a bit more interesting – particularly in new GR Sport trim – but against rivals like the Hyundai Kona it looks rather milquetoast.

For buyers who want to slip under the radar, however, the Corolla Cross’ styling is just the ticket – and it may well age better than fussier fare like the rival Nissan Qashqai or Toyota’s other small SUV, the C-HR.

With the mid-range GXL scoring a range of goodies from the flagship Atmos, the latest facelift has also added to standard equipment with questionable styling upgrades aside.

Despite all this extra kit, its price has only been $950 per cent higher than it was before. A base RAV4 or C-HR also costs thousands of dollars, and it is still a cheaper alternative to ‘bast RAVE4/C-H’.

Does the Corolla Cross merit more attention, then?

Our tester is the second most affordable member of the 2026 Corolla Cross lineup.

We may be the second least expensive Corolla Cross tester, but it’s still more expensive than the mid-range Hyundai Kona Hybrid Elite ($39,950 before on-road costs). However, it does cut the base Nissan Qashqai ST-L e-Power ($45,640 before on-roads) that is undercut by its .

There’s also a raft of cut-price Chinese rivals, ranging from the hybrid GWM Haval Jolion Vanta (currently $35,990 drive-away) to the plug-in hybrid BYD Sealion 5 Premium ($37,990 plus on-roads).

What is the Toyota Corolla Cross like on the inside?

The Toyota Corolla Cross has a bland yet functional interior that closely resembles that of the related Corolla.

Some rivals, like the Mazda CX-30, are better at offering a more premium feel. The front of the Corolla Cross’ dashboard on the passenger side is soft to the touch, as are the tops of the front doors, but the top of the dash is hard and the headliner is cheapo mouse fur.

The interior is a sea of black, including some gloss-black accents that immediately attract dust and smudges.

Nevertheless, the tech is where Toyota has increased its match pace with the technology. There is 10 GXL paraphrasings. Using the new infotainment system, 5 inches touchscreens with crisp graphics are running on the latest InfoTaIndol.

But you may never even look at them, as the wireless Android Auto connects almost instantly every time you start the car and is excellent at keeping its connection connected. The wireless phone charger at the base of the centre stack also keeps your phone secure in place, as does the wireless telephone charger.

The GR Sport and Atmos’ 12-inch fully digital instrument cluster is the 7-inch GXL misses out on its 12-in, full-digit instrument Cluster while the GxL loses itself in this way. It is a mid-spec variant of this, with 0-inch screen that looks fine and works well.

Despite the fact that the climate controls remain a series of tactile buttons and knobs, which are easily hand-held. They’re a bit high on the centre stack even though you have to look over at them, so that they are not too distracting.

The Corolla Cross is a Toyota hybrid that saves on fuel and you buy ‘tyota’ to save on the car. The official claim for our front-wheel drive GXL tester ‘4 is the 4th true statement of our test. How does the Toyota Corolla Cross drive?

The Corolla Cross does exactly what a family-focused small hybrid SUV needs to do.

This steer has a strong weighted steering, well-weightes like . The Corolla Cross is light enough to make it feel completely manageable in, for example, a tight parking lot but not feather-light nor vague.

How safe and predictable is handling, with the Corolla Cross feeling like it’s nimble (and only dealing with you understeer when you push it to its limits)? If we were to rank every small SUV in terms of driving enjoyment, the Corolla Cross would fit into somewhere comfortably just past midway point.

I can’t fault ride comfort. The fact that it’s very softly sprung is that its bump absorbers are well, but body control is good – it’s not so soft to be floaty. And there’s also a nice damped feeling to the way it soaks up things like manhole covers and pockmarked bitumen.

The hybrid powertrain is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness.

And there’s no doubt that it’ll be a peppy , so isn’t the case. Thankfully it is peppy, because you won’t want to rev the Corolla Cross.

The petrol engine kicks in at speeds of as low as 20km/h and you’re dealt with drone from the e-CVT.

Unlike the sound of it, listening to and otherwise making noise-free cabins are reasonably well protected from noise (except for a bit of wind rustling around the mirrors at high speeds).

Then we saw a strange rattle in our tester, which seemed to be coming from the tailgate. Only on certain surfaces and at some frequencies, such as when driving across train tracks or particularly poorly surfaced roads, this was the case for .

This allows you to turn the shifter into ‘B’ mode which increases regenerative braking, so that the car is reduced and more energy can be transferred to battery. Toyota says this will make your brake pads wear less, ‘tynose.

Toyota has boosted its infotainment technology significantly in recent years, as is much of the way it’s improved camera tech for its competitors. The surround-view camera has a good resolution, but colours get’very washed out at night’.

One dated touch to this camera system is one of the most recent, but it’s not yet an old-fashioned thing. If you press the camera button, and this weird 360-view swivel is placed around the car, enclosed in an oval. This was a Lexus I remember scratching my head about five years ago when I saw this in.

The suite of active safety and driver assist technology is calibrated very well, including the lane-keep help. And that’s a refreshing change, considering how many cars today have overly aggressive or downright dopey assist features.

A surround-view camera, previously exclusive to the Atmos, is newly standard on the GXL for 2026.

It is not something like the Toyota Corolla Cross that will be forever remembered in your memory. But to be fair, it doesn’t have to need to aphraser.

Not the most stylish car in its segment, it’s not the best to drive and isn’t the funniestiest thing to do. While it is one of the cheapest cars in this segment, it’s not the most expensive either way.

This is an ideal, middle-of the road small SUV with a higher fuel economy, lower service costs and benefit from Toyota’s wide dealership network.

In addition to having a bit of engine noise and’some dour interior, it doesn’t really do anything wrong. It’s also the choice of the Corolla Cross lineup, as it has been voted for the GXL to receive additional kit during the update. We would not bother with all-wheel drive, either because we don’t want to hear the word “all wheel”.

Is the Corolla Cross exciting? Absolutely not. Should it still be on your consideration list? Absolutely.
