Jetour is coming to Australia, but please, please don’t call it Chery’s off-road brand.

It may be part of the big Chinese automaker’s amalgam of marques, but Jetour really does do its own thing.

There may be a bit of technology but this business is about big-minded, huge off road power and adventurous design.

And I tell you what – this G700 is a baller machine, with brutal speed, too…

How much does the Jetour G700 cost?

But the way BYD’s Denza has priced its large plug-in hybrid luxury off road SUVs might be a good advice for that, while that is still to be confirmed.

That would mean a possible price point of about $90,000 plus on-road costs, which would make it cheaper than a base model LandCruiser 300 or Nissan Patrol. But don’t count on it.

What’s clear is that Jetour execs don’t want to get into a price war with other brands from China.

But the G700 will be comprehensively equipped when it arrives in Australia early next year, as I’ll detail below.

What is the Jetour G700 like on the inside?

The cabin in the model I have been living in China was finished with a luxurious orange leather trim, and it impressed me greatly; there are some familiar elements that we’ve already seen in this modern automotive age.

The big touchscreen media system, the heart of all your main controls and tech (I didn’t even have time to interact with the software), yes.

As a passenger for the ‘off-road’ drive, I saw that speedy processing time and high resolution display would be expected to mean you can grips with it all easily enough.

The G700 has a variety of air-con system controls, such as dual zone climate adjuster toggles, fan speed buttons and more.’ But what is the point in this case even better? That is a bit of learning, because they’re down near your knees so it can take some time to learn but at least they’re there!

A stunning cabin finish is a boldly designed steering wheel, thick grab handles on the doors and some cool dashboard treatments.

There is a console section between the seats with buttons for several off-road systems and drive modes as in Denza B8, but I found that glossy buttons were hard to read when sunlight was shining.

I have heard that to the rear of that panel is a split-opening console with ‘hide fridge compartments’, but unlike most people I’ve seen it doesn’t open from back seat so kids are always asking for treats instead of helping themselves… which is worse?

The storage compartment is huge, so it can do the job for families who collect a lot of trash when they drive to their road trips.

A second row had lots of space to sit behind my own driving position, with no leg, foot, shoulder and head room.

The 2+2+2, swaying seating layout means the middle-row captain’s chairs have a nice, but not without heating, ventilation and massage functions that are similar to front seats, there is an electric adjustment function in recline (not including heating), ventilation or massage.

It has the space between the second-row seats to allow a hallway style walk-through corridor, and even clumsy people like me can clamber through without too much trouble.

Nevertheless, in the third row (the middle-row section adjusted to be comfortable) there is more room for moving. It’s going to be a better head space for anyone under 170cm, and the leg-and toe–room left little in need of this phrase.

Yet there are ISOFIX child seat anchors for all of the rear positions (not including ventilation, cupholders and charging options) and back seats also have a level of electric tilt adjustment.

This is the correct way for Australia to be swinging, so when you park on a ‘kerb’ and then turn off your tailgate (without walking around it) as they load things in.

While it does not have a separate opening glass section, the gate itself is assisted and has struts of locking to prevent it from swinging in its own way. If you have to go through the boot space in its entirety, if you’re at the shops and are required to enter the store with these types of boot doors, it means that you need to park nose-in rather than reverse.

A lot of space is there with the third-row seats up in the boot, 224 litres for shopping, small suitcases or school backpacks. With the electronic switches, fold the rearmost seats down and there’s a decent 719L of space. A good rear features, including the tailgate bag hooks, netted sections and tie-down hook & vehicle-to load power outlet. Neat!

What’s under the bonnet?

The Jetour G700 has much power and is a powerful parody of the jetour. This is a very heavy machine, and it needs that because some of these specs are amazing.

| Specifications | Jetour G700 |
| — | — |
| Engine | 2.0L 4cyl turbo-petrol PHEV |
| Engine outputs | 155kW 340Nm |
| Electric motor outputs | 510kW 795Nm |
| System outputs | 665kW 1135Nm |
| Battery | 34.1kWh LFP |
| Transmission | 2-speed auto |
| Drive type | All-wheel drive |
| Weight | 3070-3200kg |
| 0-100km/h (claimed) | 4.6 seconds |
| Fuel economy (claimed) | 1.4L/100km (WLTC) 8.6L/100km (battery at or below 25 per cent) |
| Electric driving range (PHEV) | 100km (WLTC) |
| Max DC charge rate | 170kW |

If you say that 0-100km/h time means the G700 is quicker than some ‘performance’ cars, yes it has the plug-in hybrid capability which customers are warming up to. I mean, and 100km of electric-only range (and DC rapid charging) is good compared to some budget EVs.

How does the Jetour G700 drive?

But a decommissioned air force runway outside Beijing doesn’t seem like the best place to see what an off-road-focused SUV such as this can do, especially one in the shadows of mountains near the Great Wall of China.

But that’s where I got myself for a very, very limited drive of the G700. Aside from Jetour’s set up a few roadblocks to prove the credentials of this monster wagon, it was only on the runway that could be driving.

Their s included a steep ramped climb and descent, some offset moguls to test the suspension travel and articulation; an angled ramp so you feel like the car was about to have inverted door handles.

I had a passenger trip across those problems. It is hard to know what the potential prowesses when surfaces are clear and don’t crumble under the rubber, but it was obvious that technology on board is clinically accurate.

surround-view camera system gave the driver a great view of angles and attacks, as well as over the crest on the ramp; while suspension management and traction control made smooth progress over moguls.

Low speed? Good.

High speed? MANIC.

Before I got to drive the G700, I saw other media take over and slam their foot on the runway. And my goodness, what a show it was and its .

This is the most dynamic drive mode where there’s so much power and torque to be channeled into all four wheels that the G700’ s nose rose like a praying mantis, then dived back down under hard braking.

The soft suspension means the body moves around a lot, and in the driver’s seat it’ll be no less alarming as to how outright pace this big rig has.

I have a drive to see the exact replicable of this time, which is about 100km/h (the same as my own) but it’s very hard for that much grunt down with so much mass you can’t contend with because won’n’T be for the faint-hearted.

It’s also a little less of focusing on outright corner-carving in this hulking hero SUV, so you have to be aware of the physics behind corners. A section of slalom was enough to make it work and put out measured velocity, but when you’re moving too fast that might take some time to reel the momentum in your head?

It’s a mega SUV, no doubt and there’s also plenty of more to know about the huge car driving experience here.

What do you get?

How much does the Jetour G700 cost to run?

While we have no details about Jetour’s ownership program plans to operate in Australia, aftersales provisions its parent company has for its other brands here could give an idea.

childcareman.xyz’s Take on the Jetour G700

This one is going to be a big play for the Chinese brand. Literally and figuratively.

If Jetour gets the pricing and spec right for this big SUV in our market, it will be very strong position to appeal with family buyers, those who want to move upmarket (and also electrification fans)?

There’s a lot to like about the G700. And we can’t wait to see what it’s really like to drive.
