Toyota has introduced a new genuine accessory following widespread thefts of its LandCruiser SUVs, and it looks very familiar.
Now listed under the LandCruiser 300 Series’ accessories page on the Toyota Australia website – albeit with an image depicting a RAV4 – the new anti-theft accessory is a steering wheel lock.

The company’s website says “An internal spring system ensures the arm is moving smoothly with little effort” while the four-point touch technology gives a safe, constant grip on steering wheel.

Toyota says it will supply the steering wheel lock with a fixed set of keys, with replacement keys not available.
Compared to the old-fashioned steering wheel locks that are so common in the 1980s and 1990’s, it looks more impressive than its iconic counterpart but still is a steeringwheel lock.

Fortunately, Toyota has previously promised it has developed more anti-theft solutions than this, having previously teased an additional immobliser.
“Toyota is committed to continuously improving vehicle security and has progressively introduced advanced protective measures across its range,” the company said in a press release earlier this month.
In 2025, Toyota took further steps to increase security for many models such as the New HiLux, LandCruiser 300 and LandRuising Prado that gave owners more peace of mind – without giving specific details about security improvements – perhaps not so much information prospective thieves would need.
Using police to determine what devices were being used to steal its cars, it developed security improvements to counter their effectiveness.
Nevertheless, owners of current cars can’t exploit the improvements that Toyota has made because they aren’T available as over-the-air software updates.
For now, it’s just the latest generation of HiLux, LandCruiser 300 Series and Prado that have received security improvements, but Toyota says it plans to roll out changes to other models.
The Toyota Australia is developing a system of prioritisation for owners of existing vehicles that have been the victims of theft to ensure they can be replaced with replacement cars as soon as possible, rather than being stuck in ‘long queues behind other customers’.
The Queensland Police Service confirmed earlier this month that it had made seven arrests and laid down 380 charges after a spate of thefts across Brisbane late last year.
The examples were an alleged car theft syndicate that targeted LandCruisers and Prados, with 60 vehicles worth around $8 million stolen to export overseas destinations such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their respective countries.
The stolen vehicles were accessed through the CAN bus port, which allowed thieves to control the cars and disable Toyota’s satellite tracking device, authorities said.
Two alleged stolen vehicles were seen by police entering a Rocklea wrecking yard on December 2, 2025. After a shipping container was later found by police with two stolen LandCruisers hidden behind ‘flat-faced car parts’.
Subsequently, shipping containers were located and seized in Brisbane and in Melbourne containing multiple stolen vehicles.
