The Ford Bronco is finally coming to Australia, but it won’t be the hardcore off-roader many have been waiting for.
This market will be re-ordered to receive the Chinese-built Bronco New Energy – an extended-range electric SUV with a large battery, long claimed driving range and what might be very sharp pricing rather than the US-made Bronc on the platform of the Australian-developed T6 ladder-frame.

This is a much cheaper alternative to the way Ford would import the Bronco off-roader from the US, and would put the new model directly in the heart of the SUV market Down Under.
Ford’s joint venture with Jiangling Motors is JMC Ford in China, building the Bronco New Energy. While Australia is understood to be only getting the latter, it’s available in China as both all-electric and extended-range electric forms of .
The plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are similar to extended-range electric vehicles (EREV), where they have a combustion engine and one or more electric motors. Nevertheless, EREVs are closer to pure-electric vehicles (EV) in the way they drive; their combustion engine is only a generator for charging the battery rather than directly sending drive to the wheels.
Local naming has not been confirmed, but the Australian lineup is likely to include three grades Big Bend, Outer Banks and Badlands.
Although Ford Australia is still a tight-lipped on the arrival of Bronco New Energy, it will have to be resolved to fight ever more stringent emissions laws Down Under.
This is a new energy drivetrain for one of the most iconic nameplates in the world and an exciting addition to the global Ford line-up, with “The Bronco New Energy” being added to one that has become one among the first names on the planet. It also has a 50mm longer wheelbase than the ladder-frame Everest, but despite its greater dimensions it seats only five.
That means it won’t be pitched as a rock-crawling rival to the Jeep Wrangler, but it is expected to offer some light off-road capability, helped by chunkier all-terrain tyres on some versions.
has ground clearance of 215mm to 220mm, with a wading depth of 600mm. According to the variant, off-road equipment available in China (including lock front and rear differentials), several terrain modes or an off road crawl mode are all examples of various types of off adversity.
A major departure from the Ford models sold in Australia is the cabin, which has been a key upgrade to its current model of s. For example, a low-emissions SUV with ‘long electric driving range would give Ford. model to offset those higher-end models and also offer Australian buyers an affordable entry point into the Bronco family for their price.
While final pricing, specifications, release timing and even the model’s local name are yet to be confirmed, it could be one of its most important new models in years if Ford can land the Bronco New Energy here from close to the $50,000 mark with almost 200km of electric range.
