Ford Bronco coming to Australia but not the one you expected

The Ford Bronco is finally coming to Australia, but it won’t be the hardcore off-roader many have been waiting for.

This market will be re-ordered to receive the Chinese-built Bronco New Energy – an extended-range electric SUV with a large battery, long claimed driving range and what might be very sharp pricing rather than the US-made Bronc on the platform of the Australian-developed T6 ladder-frame.

This is a much cheaper alternative to the way Ford would import the Bronco off-roader from the US, and would put the new model directly in the heart of the SUV market Down Under.

Ford’s joint venture with Jiangling Motors is JMC Ford in China, building the Bronco New Energy. While Australia is understood to be only getting the latter, it’s available in China as both all-electric and extended-range electric forms of .

The plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are similar to extended-range electric vehicles (EREV), where they have a combustion engine and one or more electric motors. Nevertheless, EREVs are closer to pure-electric vehicles (EV) in the way they drive; their combustion engine is only a generator for charging the battery rather than directly sending drive to the wheels.

Local naming has not been confirmed, but the Australian lineup is likely to include three grades Big Bend, Outer Banks and Badlands.

Although Ford Australia is still a tight-lipped on the arrival of Bronco New Energy, it will have to be resolved to fight ever more stringent emissions laws Down Under.
