The world’s best-selling car has received its first major update in nearly a decade.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is the first generational overhaul for the top-selling mid-size SUV since late 2018, and it has some very big shoes to fill given its predecessor is one of the most popular cars in the world, not just Australia.
Last year, the RAV4 found more than one million new homes globally, reclaiming the top spot from the Tesla Model Y. Locally, it was not only Australia’s favourite SUV and the top-selling mid-size SUV, but Toyota’s best-seller and the nation’s second-best seller.
The new sixth-generation RAV4 is characterized by heavily revised underpinnings and powertrains, fully redesigned inside and out, being described as the first software-defined vehicle of Japanese brand with a new proprietary operating system.
The outgoing model has been a success in runaway mode, with up to three years of wait times during COVID but Toyota can’t be complacent. The mid-size SUV segment – Australia’s largest and most populous new-vehicle industry is hotter than ever before, with both fresh challengers from China and traditional rivals of Japanese competitors as well as Korean and European brands all targeting straight at the RAV4.

The Mk6 RAV4 is alleged to be more connected, more efficient and more refined than it has been previously described in Australia as being the first vehicle (PHEV) rollout of Toyota’s plug-in hybrid car. The new model isn’t yet available for PHEV versions of that model, so we’re just reviewing the hybrid here as it was.
While childcareman.xyz has been a long-running proponent of preparing for launching ‘pre-production RAV4’, we spent much time behind the wheel of the all-hybrid RAVE4 range on the winding targa roads between Launceston and Cradle Mountain in Tasmania – some of world’s best roads but not where you think he would be first to launch if your hybrid SUV was going to go.
What is the meaning behind the sixth instalment of what started out as the world’s first compact (now mid-size) car-based SUV that was released in 1994? Is it still the king of sales for an SUV or not?
How much does the Toyota RAV4 cost?
There is also an up-and-down price tag for the RAV4 hybrid, which has started at $45,990 plus on-road costs. In the coming months, PHEV lineup will be out with the cheapest version from $58,840 plus on-roads.

For the hybrid lineup, price increases range from $3000 to $6000 depending on variants – not an insignificant sum of money but slightly offset by higher specification levels across the board.
Despite the fact that Toyota doesn’t advertise national drive-away pricing like an increasing number of rivals, a quick check on the Japanese brand’s online configurator shows ‘$50,690 base drive away for front-wheel drive RAV4 GX FWD (and $72,060 drive–away) for the flagship all- wheel drive ‘GR Sport PHEV AWD. What is the Toyota RAV4 like on the inside?
As with the exterior, there has been quite a comprehensive redesign inside the cabin of the new RAV4.

This model is firmly in the territory of modern design where, as for the old model was looking at a little old and tired on both designs and displays technology, it’s an established model that has been well-established in contemporary design history – but in essentially confined to primarily restrained Toyota style of way.
A pair of upright, freestanding digital screens (a driver’s instrument cluster and a central infotanment touchscreen) have been replaced with the new RAV4; there are less physical buttons than before – although not everything is stored in the multimedia screen.
All variants are given a 12-inch configurable driver’s cluster with several different layouts and widgets, while it is an evolution from the old model’d already good digital panel but I don’t like how it makes so many (mostly Chinese) models on the market today.
In any case, the Toyota interface has been updated to give a new look and feel while maintaining contemporary variants of typical Toyota symbols and widgets that are much more modern.

It can be set to display virtual dials, or a more minimalist look with just the digital speedo or driver assistance widgets and even project your Apple Maps or Google Map when they’re activated via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto – turn-by-turn prompts are also projected onto the head-up display in variants equipped with it.
Across the globe, the central infotainment system is 10 per cent of information. The base grade grades are 5 inches (with Edge variants and higher upping than 12) in base grades, with the average of a being 5 inch. 9 inches in length. The all versions are embedded and connected satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, DAB+ digital radio (and Spotify integration) integrated with the software.
In addition to the in-car displays and many other features and modules within the car, the RAV4 also introduces the new Arene proprietary operating system that allows for more connectivity and integration between systems as well as over-the-air software updates for the infotainment (including active safety features, battery pre-conditioning and the digital key) – vehicle modules and additional information on its own behalf.
Despite being the new platform, it’s an all-new Arene software that feels like something of a “revolution” to the previous software rather than merely transforming itself into one another at 1 level (the only difference is seen at this front-end design level) as the newly tiled homescreen; and in fact, its extended functionality does not seem so much more.

Besides the embedded navigation for the launch drive routing, we didn’t really have much time to play around with the RAV4’s multimedia system.
We use it for a very short time but I know that it’s easy to use, responds quickly to touch inputs and provides crisp graphics with smooth refresh rates. So it’s enough to take the RAV4’ – its software forward-looking, without alienating its traditional audience.
However, the heated/ventilated seat controls are touch-only (which is annoying because the temperature controls retain physical buttons in addition to virtual ones) and that’s why heat/VENTILATES have a lot of other comfort control. Also, the smart voice assistant also chimes in at the mention of any word that vaguely rhymes with ‘Toyota’ (and may be slightly basic for some people).
Similarly, all variants also have 5G-equipped Toyota Connected Services with features such as the SOS emergency call function and remote app connectivity with vehicle information on part of the Toyota Essentials package that does not require payment-based subscriptions after the first 12 months.

The Toyota Connected+ package – complimentary for the first 12 months – adds services like remote vehicle tracking.
A six-year free period from delivery is standard for a typical multimedia’, including connected navigation services, the Google-powered voice assistant and connected Navigation routing. It includes Spotify integration, which is available for three months free with a $12 trial. Subscription fee for is 50 per month.
In addition to all the in-car tech stuff up front, the RAV4 is a good utility. Big tooth-stuff holders are in the cup, there is plenty of nook and crannie to smuggle your phones (and wallets and keys), a deep cubby under the centre armrest drawer with multiple opening angles like in Xus; decent door bins to drop bottles and snacks.
During this time, Toyota noted that it was thinking about some of the grouping in which buttons and functions are clustered so they remain within arm’s reach of driver. I can certainly see where it was from an age when one-touch functions have become three or four tap sequences in some of the screen-heavy interiors. And while the RAV4 still has a sort of elegant simplicity, it’s not revealing.
Moreover, in addition to the high-quality build quality that is up to top-notch Toyota standards, material quality is solid and not exceptional. In the case of the latter, high traffic touchpoints such as the leather steering wheel trim and physical buttons feel well-made and offer a solidity to their action that is quite satisfying but there are plenty of less expensive-feeling surfaces throughout the cabin that don’t scream premium like some competitors do at this price point.

The new RAV4 has more than enough room for growing families in the rear, as with space for child capsules, child seats, lanky teenagers and even full-grown adults like we had before.
I was in 6’1′′ head and leg room for 6 ‘1′ me, even behind my preferred driving position. You could squeeze three across the rear bench (although hump in the floor is actually part of the middle passenger’s foot and toe room somewhat).
In the rear, a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders, map pockets on the front seatbacks and bottle holders in the doors of the door is an amplifier that has dual USB-C ports for charging devices, as well as directional air vents (but no third zone of climate), ‘fleaster’ style arm rest with cups held by two different types of cables.
A top-tether point on the backs of all three rear pews will be a positive sign for parents, and an ISOFIX anchor is also available in the outboard seats. Assuming there’s an open, airy feel in the back of the tall roofline and glasshouse as well as that little ones (or small ones at heart) shouldn’t be too hemmed in.
A panoramic sunroof on the CruiseR is also available, which extends well into the second row of this new RAV4 (not a small moonror that was present in the previous generation) and on its newly launched XSE. A nice touch is the powered sunshade, especially given the harsh Australian sun.

A further back, there is no third row of seats like you’ll find in some versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander or Nissan X-Trail but as many as 705 litres (VDA) of luggage capacity (although this is “depending on grade”).
Still, however, the cargo area of the RAV4 is clearly deeper than it has been previously and space itself is well wide square. And then when you fold down the back seat seats to extend the luggage bay it’s almost flat – although we do not have volume capacity behind the front seats.
There is a space-samper spare wheel in all grades under the boot floor, although base GX can be used with an optional full-size spare.

This launch drive scheme was almost entirely high-speed, dynamic driving on winding mountain roads and some 110km/h Tasmanian highway (not a reflection of what most owners will be doing with their RAV4s), * Note.
The new RAV4 Hybrid would be a much closer to its official combined fuel consumption claim, especially given the trip computer quickly began heading towards 6 with more city and urban driving. The highway was at a constant speed on level ground, and we spent more time with 0L/100km as we were less likely to be paraphrased.

How does the Toyota RAV4 drive?
This launched route (pictured above) was between Launceston and Cradle Mountain in Tasmania with an emphasis on dynamic, winding mountain-and targa road roads rather than city and urban driving.

While we had a lot of time behind the wheel but I would like to have used my life more in everyday life than cross-country touring and dynamic driving in what will be mostly ‘family school bus and grocery-getter’.
But the new RAV4 feels like a solid evolution of its predecessor rather than’regular change,’ said Toyota and has been “very well on that path.” That’s also a good car, even better than it is by refining and polishing an already strong all-round package.
While the chassis and drivetrain are very similar to that of a classic car, after improvements in drivability and refinement it’s even more fun to pilot than before. Structural strengthening to increase rigidity, increased damping and greater insulation all contribute to this without excessive technicalization.
The official 0-100km/h acceleration claims of 8-8 acceleration have shown that this new RAV4 is smoother and more responsive than it was before, even though the added grunt from the new electric motor and revised powertrain calibration make its own RAW4 feel much more sensitive. A 0 second or less – they were low- to mid-8 in the past. global specs – 0 seconds from .

We tried every hybrid variant bar the base GX, across a mix of FWD and AWD versions.
The larger Cruiser grades are a little firmer in ride quality and don’t quite have the same cushy rebound from sharper hits as the GXL and Edge with their smaller wheels and chubbier tyres.
Further, the theory suggests that the Edge’s 20mm wider track should be a better road holding and stability for roads but it was pretty hard to really know what this is as we swapped between cars.
Similarly to the previous model, the steering of an RAV4 is responsive (correctly accurate and communicative) as it does with its steering. And with the well-balanced TNGA chassis, it’s a wonderful thing to steer – made clear during our winding drive program.

Some modes, such as Eco, Normal and Sport and Custom can be flicked between a handful of modes to further adjust throttle response and steering feel but in fact the standard setting seemed to offer the best balance.
In Sport, an aggressive throttle response was heightened and well-prepared for the electric motor (or motors in AWD versions) being prepared to travel all times rather than on when needed; however, while the steering of this mode is unnecessarily heavy and does not add any feel or engagement, nor some form of synthesised engine noise that drown out the CVT drone.
That’s probably the biggest blunder on RAV4’s report card, that while it is a solid performer, the 2 are. This kind of dynamic driving is fun, but 5L hybrid drivetrain just doesn’t come to the party enough.
The constant engine noise isn’t particularly pleasant, and Revs just flare. That’s an apologie, because the RAV4 is one of the more dynamic and engaging mid-size SUVs to drive — it’s just.

We also had a couple of stints on dirt and gravel roads – no serious off-roading but representative of euthanizing country lane or camping trail and even the 2WD cars were perfectly stable and predictable on loose surfaces.
They add more Trail and Snow modes to AWD versions; although we did not drive them on any surfaces serious enough to require using them, they tailor the powertrain and various electronic aids to the terrain chosen. For example, even 2WD models have an ‘Auto LSD’ function that uses braking to drive torque vectors to increase stability.
In the new Vehicle Braking Posture Control system, a vehicle brakes the outside front wheel and inside rear wheel to reduce body roll (especially on winding roads) with its new VBRK posture control system.
This is no doubt a part of my positive experience behind the wheel of the RAV4 during our fun stints on Tasmania’s winding mountain roads and if you had not told me it was just subtly applying the brakes in the background, I wouldn’t have known that it wasn’T really doing so.

Considering the fact that there is no significant regen going on, Toyota says it has improved brake pedal feel and response through a new electronic controlled braking system with an additional electric cylinder to the existing master cylo (with active hydraulic booster) as well as its newly developed electronically controlled version of this engine.
Did it work? I think not that many RAV4 owners will notice a difference except when they drive the new one and the old one back-to-back – to be honest, this is what drives here for so much of the driving qualities.
The noise from road and wind is a good part of this segment for insulation, as well as engine noise even when under heavy load. It is not quite a class-leader in cabin refinement, but it does improve on the old one which could be’short of noise’.
My favorite of the variants we drove was probably the GXL, with its super-comfy electrically adjustable cloth trimmed driver’s seat and smaller 18-inch wheels (235/60) tyres making it arguably the most comfortable and refined drive of this bunch.

Finally, given our targa-style drive program we didn’t spend much time testing the driver aids (although country roads did cause some frustration with the lane-keeping assist tech but that was pretty much it).
This adaptive cruise control worked on a late-minute return to the airport (the one highway stint we got), and the RAV4 now has an Eco Run mode that relaxes acceleration inputs, as well with meter showing how much aero drag does leading cars provide.
In addition to this, Toyota says there’s a new, more sophisticated set of cameras and millimetre-wave radar sensors that will better detect other cars, increasing sensing ability for two vehicles ahead of the road. If it’s also going to see vehicles that are in your lane more efficiently, it will also detect cars moving into your car.
A similar to tech that has already been released by rival brands such as Volkswagen, the RAV4 will also make an emergency stop if the driver is incapacitated and adaptive cruise control is engaged. The RAV4’s cruise control, which is also known for its navigation connectivity will expect road curves and intersections, “natural and appropriate” acceleration & deceleration features – although we didn’t really test this out.

Is the Toyota RAV4 safe?
While it’s touted as the “safest RAV4 ever”, the initial production run of vehicles for Australia will be ‘unrated’ by ANCAP. Toyota says it’s working on running upgrades to bring vehicles produced from the second half of 2026 up to five-star safety standards.

The safety on the [RAV4] is the best we’ve ever had. And we were going to try and launch it last year, but because of the delays in production that has led to launching it now [under new 2026 ANCAP protocols]” Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales and marketing John Pappas told childcareman.xyz.
A Q&A spokesman for Toyota said the new ‘product updates’ don’t necessarily involve any structural changes at a factory level, but won’T be retrofitting to vehicles delivered earlier – so that the first batch of cars delivered in six months or so will remain ‘unrated’.
However, details of the upgrades are still to be confirmed at this stage; spokesman for Toyota said that they will only include “some improvements to the passive and active safety systems” in addition to their plans.
You can read about the 2026 ANCAP safety protocols here, but the headline change for this year is moving from a ‘box-ticking’ system to a ‘stages of safety’ approach, better assessing in-car distractions, and real-world performance of active safety and assistance systems.

How much does the Toyota RAV4 cost to run?
Similarly to the larger Toyota line-up, the RAV4 is covered by Toyota Australia’s five year, unlimited km new–vehicle warranty with upto 10 years battery coverage if you service with the brand’s dealer network.

I can’t say much bad about the new RAV4, but there is no. This SUV is bang-on what it needs to be for its target market, while that may sound like faint praise.
