Ineos wont build any more models from the ground up as it looks to partners for help – report

It has confirmed the company is building the Fusilier – or any other future model of ‘from scratch’. ** ** .

Speaking to UK magazine Autocar, Ineos CEO Lynn Calder said the Fusilier – a smaller new SUV to slot in under the existing Grenadier – is expected to be launched “probably by 2028”, and it will be followed by two more models.

However, the British-based automaker will lean on technology partners to bring these new models to market.

“We’re not building any other cars from the ground up, like we have with the Grenadier,” said Ms Calder.

For us, it is about technology sharing now and once we have got that set then we can sell more models in a shorter time frame. , “It’s a phrase that says.

Don’t expect any more model derivatives based on the Grenadier’s in-house developed ladder-frame platform, either.

Then we don’t want to change the wheelbase of the Grenadier or do we do a lot more work on the grenadedier platform? But you won’t see a short-wheelbase Grenaded Grinadier, but the smaller 4×4,” Ms Calder said.

As previously reported, Ineos was believed to be in talks with Chery to use the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) architecture employed by its off-road sub-brand, iCaur.

Although Ineos hasn’t said any details about these alliances – such as the unconfirmed report on talks with Chery ‘in order to confirm’ that Ms Calder’s comments rule out the Fusilier being based on a smaller, modified version of the Grenadier app.

In iCaur’s V27 EREV, the wheels are driven by electric motors and offer significant advantages for off-roading (the petrol engine used as only a power generator to feed back the battery) with an overall benefit of off road driving.

The iCaur line’s current flagship is the V27, just over five metres long and with a turbocharged 1 (pictured) 4- litre petrol engine with one 185kW/300Nm electric motor or dual motors outputting 150kW/3205NM and 184kW/2300 Nm. 5-L four-cylinder petrol engines, ?

iCaur also offers the significantly smaller 03 and V23, though these are pure-electric SUVs.

A major benefit to Ineos in partnering with iCaur is that the Chinese brand’s cars are engineered and manufactured in left- and right hand car (the brand will be entering Australia in early 2027).

This is a far cry from the heavy-duty Grenadier, the first model to come out of Ineos, which was created from scratch after Land Rover announced it was discontinuing its classic Defender.

Ineos should be able to fast-track the release of its new models by working with another manufacturer, while keeping development costs low as well as minimum production costs.

Ineos unveiled the Fusilier concept in February 2024, featuring Grenadier-like styling but a bespoke skateboard platform underneath, plus the choice of all-electric or EREV powertrains. It confirmed a production version was planned for a 2027 introduction.

Just a few months later in July 2024, Ineos delayed the Fusilier indefinitely, citing “reluctant consumer uptake of EVs, and industry uncertainty around tariffs, timings and taxation”.

The company added a statement released at the time “Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in most markets continues to grow and consumer confidence will match that.”

But if the industry can meet net-zero targets, there must be long-term clarity from policy-makers and a number of technology options available for that sector to consider factors such as raw materials, infrastructure and affordability. , ” and.

Ineos Automotive’s regional director for Australia, New Zealand and APAC, Justin Hocevar, told childcareman.xyz in March the Fusilier project was progressing.

“We had to pause that project; we were charging into it too quickly,” he said.

And now that we have a little more time, “we’ve got swayed into understanding what is going on with many markets around the world and the technology available to us.”

“In terms of announcing the timeline, I don’t think it’s years away.”

While Ineos Automotive does not publish sales figures – you won’t be seen in Australian VFACTS reports, for example – but says it has sold 35,000 cars worldwide since its production began in 2022.

But ineos has now had to contend with higher tariffs on its French-built SUVs in the US, its largest market share of COVID-related supply disruptions and challenges with supplier Recaro, among other speed bumps.

The US reportedly accounts for around 65 per cent of Grenadier sales.
