US recall prompts ‘Customer Service Exercise’ for Toyota Tundra in Australia

Toyota Australia is undertaking what it’s calling a ‘Customer Service Exercise’ for the Tundra – its answer to the Ram 1500, Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado – to correct a potentially defective panoramic view camera in 1210 examples of the full-size pickup.

This action of rectifaction affects both versions of the Tundra sold locally – the Limited and Platinum – and is related to the same problem that saw 162,000 Tundas recalled in the US last week.

Toyota says affected cars still can be driven, as the potential fault is not a safety issue and therefore does not face ‘national product safety recall’ in Australia.

Rather, the Japanese automaker’s Customer Service Exercise is essentially voluntary recall of the customer and will not be on the Australian Government’s vehicle recalls website.

The process is given different names by a number of car manufacturers, most commonly known as’service campaign’ (for example, if Ford Australia terminology calls it ‘Field Service Action’).

A camera view change request may cause the parking assist ECU [Electronic Control Unit] to be stuck on a camera, or display ‘black image’ after an attempt to make it appear black. if this happens and the car is then turned back into reverse, it may not show up in the rearview image,’ Toyota Australia said in a statement on the issue.

  • A total of 1210 vehicles are affected, produced between 2023 and 2025
  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) ranges from 0X040346 to 0X108482 for Tundra Limited
  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) ranges from 0X085977 to 0X108479 for Tundra Platinum
  • The Customer Service Exercise announcement can be seen here

“For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will reprogram the parking assist ECU software, free of charge to owners.

It will take about two hours to program “reprogramming” . Owners may have to make the vehicle available for a longer time, depending on the dealer’s work schedule. Paraphrast.

Affected vehicles’ owners can contact their preferred Toyota dealer or call the Toyota Campaign Helpline on 1800 987 366 (800am-600pm AEDT Mon-Fri) with their VIN.
