2026 Hyundai i30 Sedan N review

Hyundai is busy cooking up a new batch of compact performance models… well, slow-cooking.

We’ve been talking about successors to the popular i20 N and i30 N for years now, and while their arrival does seem to be inching closer, no launch date has yet been set.

That’s a bit of an impatient fanfare, but I understand why Hyundai is taking its time – the currents of electrification are pulling automakers every single way and the i30 Sedan N tested here is hard to follow.

First launched in 2021, this spicy saloon wowed from day one with its performance, character and value for money.

In 2023, Hyundai updated its smallest N sedan with an array of cosmetic and mechanical improvements to improve the package that is already excellent by adding a series of newer models in addition to their laurels while still sitting on its seats.

Since then… not much has changed, bar a warranty extension. Meanwhile, the entry price has risen by $1000, and key rivals including the Subaru WRX and Skoda Octavia RS have received facelifts of their own.

Last year Hyundai boosted prices across much of its Australian model range by $250 last year, with a new, longer seven-year warranty but the i30 Sedan N copped an additional $1000 price hike.

What is the Hyundai i30 Sedan N like on the inside?

The cabin is functional and driver-focused, but it’s far from the pinnacle of polish.

For the entire life of the i30 Sedan N, we’ve complained about cheap materials; gripe remains – hard scratchy plastics are widespread and smudge-prone piano black trim is also too common.

Some will argue it’s unfair to expect a $53k performance car to feel premium inside, and I tend to agree with them. However, the WRX and Octavia RS present far better, as does the loosely comparable MG 7.

In the right places, Hyundai has at least spent its apparently meagre interior budget on ‘the right place’ still to say that it is not too . In addition to trimmed in perforated leather, the front seats are heated and ventilated (a surprise extra) which is worth it on hot summer trips. In addition to the pronounced side support for your leg and thigh, both chairs are sporty but comfortable they offer plenty of electric adjustment.

But all of these animal comforts help to a low-key, unnecessarily high seating position that disrupts the relationship between car and driver. It was ‘on the car’ that I felt as if I was sitting – not in it, but on the driver’s seat to its lowest possible position. But if you’re looking for shorter steerers, it’s just one of the things that should be your concern before you buy six-footers. I don’t remember this, too, as is the case with the basic cloth-trimmed seats in the i30 N hatch.

But we don’t get the right lightweight N bucket seats in Korea, because they are not compatible with Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and so on. OK, rant over your okay.

But i30 Sedan N’s ergonomics, for the most part, is generally quite well-regarded as being elevated driving position except that of elevatorated drivers. It also has tilts and telescopes on both the steering wheel, while all key cabin controls are close.

Most of these controls – two blue drive mode selectors and the red N Grin Shift button – are actually found on the wheel itself, meaning that you can control what is going to be driving but remain fully controlled over steering inputs.

The steering wheel is trimmed in perforated leather with Performance Blue stitching, similar to the seats and thus gives the N its own identity as opposed to lesser variants of the i30 Sedan.

This go-fast flagship also features the best technology available across the i30 Sedan range, which isn’t actually high praise.

You get twin 10 s. A 25-inch digital display is a form of 15-inches, meaning the graphics are fuzzy and processing power limited by older Hyundai software. Skoda says that it’s a better thing to say, “It is the end of the world again,” but this does not mean ending for Skord.

Despite the fact that there is no wireless smartphone mirroring on the i30 Sedan N, forgiven’t foresees it much harder to say sorry about this. You’ll need a USB-A cable to use CarPlay, that’s right. hey, I mean come on, it’s 2026!”

Thankfully, I’m glad Hyundai still has old-school physical climate controls (although it is nice to keep the same thing as ). At least the 2023 update also included a new wireless charger, USB-C charging outlets and Bluelink connected services — all of which ensures that the technology suite feels somewhat current.

While the familiarity of Hyundai’s N Mode app is a reminder, it still impressed with its popularity. It is a performance hub that allows for customisation of just about every aspect of the driving experience, which can be found within the infotainment system. In addition, it displays performance data and maps of popular Australian racetracks, as well as other functions such as displaying performance information.

These features are certainly going to be a feature for Motorsport nerds, and few competitors can match the i30 N’t more focused on performance driving.

But that focus is also apparent in how the digital instrument cluster works it has a more graceful age than other parts of the cabin. If you choose which drive mode, the design and data readouts differ; when you switch into N mode (and vice versa) standard gauges and basic vehicle information are shown above, a fiery central rev counter is used to replace the standard scales of the car. All of it’s very theatrical, bringing excitement behind the wheel with its .

Now that it’s not possible to talk about the fun stuff without addressing practical considerations, let’t quickly address cabin storage. The i30 Sedan N isn’t good at this department, nor does it fail spectacularly in the short-term or even an impressive one. My phone, takeaway coffee and 600ml drink bottle were all homes for me but there was room for other small items in the glove box, door cards and under the centre armrest.

Real estate is at a bit of a premium in the back, though.

The i30 Sedan N’s low roofline makes it hard for ingress to open the rear doors when opening the back doors. That’s then reflected by a lack of headroom after you’re sitting, which is further compounded by the dark cloth headlining overhead.

I also wanted to have more knee-room when sitting behind my driving position at a leggy 185cm, especially as the front seatbacks were so hard.

All this in mind, so the second row is best for children and smaller adults. A good bet is the Octavia RS, which means you ferry adults around regularly.

Those willing to ride in the back of an i30 Sedan N rightly have USB-C outlets, air vents and door storage (although there is no fold-down centre armrest) but no folding-back.

The boot is also compromised, but this time it’s due to imperfect packaging, not a dearth of space.

There’s 464 litres of capacity (technically) more than you get in a WRX or MG 7 – but it is one to first overcome if there’s reelt load lip. Their next obstacle will be poor boot lighting, followed by bright red chassis bracing where the cargo area and cabin meet.

Luckily, this heavy metal bar doesn’t only make the headlines for show– Hyundai says it increases torsional rigidity by 29 per cent as opposed to the base car.

Besides the can of goo, Hyundai also earns points for selling the i30 Sedan N with a space-saver spare wheel.

What’s under the bonnet?

The same cracking powertrainer, New year. Hint I love this 2 but. This case mated to an eight-speed dual–clutch automatic transmission, with 0-litre turbopetrol four-pot.

It’s worth the time we spend on this engine, because ever-tightening emissions rules are expected to end in the near future – so we should enjoy it as much as possible.

Hyundai is said to have begun work on a ‘new model’ of the i30 N, which will be equipped with’hybridised powertrains like next generation in-generation e20 N. The autocar has argued that this may be an uprated variant of an existing electrified powertrain, or even a new petrol engine entirely.

Previous N boss Albert Biermann first mooted hybrid power for the i30 Sedan N back in 2024.

How does the Hyundai i30 Sedan N drive?

The i30 Sedan N is still an absolute hoot to steer in just about any situation several years after launch, but the e30’s popularity with s remains one of the most untrue theories ever.

But that’s not a small part because of its vast array of configurable drive modes – one selling point – that distinguishes the i30 N from its competitors.

Certainly, the cheapest performance cars have a ‘Sport’ mode and some throw in ‘Veltd exhaust or adaptive damping’ but none are close to the level of personalisation offered by Hyundai’s N Mode app. Aside from these areas of adaptation, N drivers can also tinker with the steering weight, transmission speed and engine mapping (along with an electric-electric power) as well as the e-LSD which changes character of the car in the process.

The N behaves like its i30 Sedan siblings and Dial everything back, as does the . Sure it’s still faster and sharper than the base model, but just as light steering, a suspension that is similarly compliant with itself; neighbours won’t complain noise when you leave for work in the morning.

Indeed, apart from an annoying overspeed warning system and pronounced tyre roar at higher speeds, the i30 Sedan N is for one of the most enjoyable daily runabouts.

But to treat the N just as a grocery-getter would be wasting its talents – this pocket rocket deserves its legs stretched every now and then, after that, is an all out of fashion.

And no, I’m not suggesting the occasional highway jaunt, especially given this 2026-plated model still lacks adaptive cruise control.

But I’m not referring to the “fucky” driving on a properly twisting country road. a racetrack or ‘. If you’re going to attack your favourite stretch of tarmac before hitting it, Oh should be sure to switch into one of the more aggressive drive modes — that’s a “Sport”, an ‘N’ or your own custom setting.

Doing so reveals an entirely different side to the i30 Sedan N – a hard-edged, raucous alter-ego befitting of the badge’s badge.

A highlight of fun is Hyundai’s ‘G4KH’ four-cylinder turbo engine, which hasn’t lost any of its fizz despite tightening noise and emissions rules. When it responds instantly, increases boost rapidly and delivers strong mid-range punch – just tapers down at the top end of right.

The short-shifting gears are a set of plastic paddles mounted to the steering wheel, so you can avoid this tapering sensation. When such input is given, the transmission responds quickly to such information; this means that continued driver involvement continues.

Hyundai The i30 Sedan N is going to run from 0-100km/h in 5 — according to Hyundai. if anything it feels slightly faster than that from behind the wheel and 3 seconds. It’s not a face-melting like some exotics and dual-motor EVs but fast enough to make your face smile.

I can’t name a single EV that could produce similar smudge fireworks. A TCR-surper in sport mode is the i30 Sedan N burbled like a racer, while N mode unleashed violent pops, bangs and DCT ‘farts’.

Conversely, eco mode completely shuts it down for a . This is the character that makes the i30 Sedan N so popular – every drive is an occasion, even if you don’t want it to be.

It’s mighty hard to put the lid back on when you have had this weapon in full flight. It doesn’t just mean the straight-line thrills it gives, either.

Beefy 360mm ventilated front brake discs are a source of confidence when it comes to any corner entry, and the i30 Sedan N is more agile than rivals like the relative lightness (and compact size) that makes its own Octavia RS as well as strong mechanical grip; direct variable-weight steering. But I just wish you were lower in the driver’s seat,’ .

The i30 Sedan N, being front-wheel drive, won’t be sideways around corners like a Toyota GR86, nor does it have the all-paw traction of WRX?

But if you get back on the gas too early, understeer creeps in but it’s not as good that the electronic limited-lip differential helps to slingshot out of bends (i30 Sedan N)?

This is especially true in wet weather, as moisture limits the ability of front tyres to produce grip and also handling up to 392Nm of torque. For dry conditions, enthusiastic driving is the best way to avoid as such. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to wait until the sun was shining.

This is also a problem when taking off from’standstill’ (high-torque, front-drive powertrain of the i30 Sedan N) – wheel hop (otherwise called axle tramp) are common under hard acceleration even after Hyundai addressed this as part of 2023 model update.

The suspension does not contain such flaws, however, as the standard electronically controlled suspension (ECS) strikes a balance between sporty handling and everyday livingability. The softest setting is best for most situations, including the average weekend blast (although ride comfort varies greatly depending on the firmness level chosen). On the other hand, a stiffer setting introduces low-frequency harshness that’s only worth suffering from at tv day.

The i30 Sedan has an overall three-star ANCAP safety rating according to tests conducted in 2024, although this does not apply to the N (unrated with petrol variants of the e30 sedan built before June 2023) which is unrated along with its diesel counterparts.

Few modern cars marry four-door practicality and driving fun like the i30 Sedan N.

A small sedan when you want it to be, is a sensible little car but turns into ‘bonkers back-road blaster/track weapon at the touch of button.

The first half of that short is nailed by rivals like the WRX and Octavia RS, but neither engages the driver much like this loudly proud Hyundai with its military-grade exhaust, slick dual-clutch transmission and communicative chassis.

The enthusiasts will be forever fond of such traits and, in this case age has been kind to i30 Sedan N.

But its inside hasn’t been quite as well-received, however, as it is in the interior of . The materials are cheaper than they ever have, while the antiquated technology suite leaves plenty to be desired.

Hence, while the i30 Sedan N is still one of the best drivers’ picks, it’s not quite as easy to live with as Volkswagen Group alternatives.

It is cheaper, though, by a small margin (and quite. But also less expensive to keep track of a . and covered under a track warranty. As such, if there are no mod-cons, it is easy to forgive the lack of some.
